The letter asks for the business community’s continued support.
The letter states that, “Our ultimate goal would be to obtain sustainable annual passenger boardings of more than 15,000 per year. This would allow the airport to come off of our government subsidy as provided by the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, and allow multiple air carriers to multiply destinations.”
The letter goes on to say, “However our current short-term focus is to achieve a 10,000 passenger per year threshold which would award Jamestown with an additional $850,000 per year of government funding. This federal money would be used for Capital Improvement Projects that increase safety and improve operational efficiency of our airport. We are currently on track to reach between 7,000 and 8,000 passengers this year.” (2015).

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says American white pelicans are nesting at a central North Dakota refuge in near-record numbers.
Biologist Alisa Bartos says the agency estimates about 32,000 pelicans returned to the Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge.
A record 35,466 birds were counted in 2000 at the refuge, which is the largest nesting colony for the big-billed birds in North America.
Bartos says rising water levels swallowed one of the two main nesting islands at the refuge this year. But she says there is still a lot of land left at the remaining island for the big birds to nest.
The pelicans normally stay in North Dakota through September, raising their young and feasting at small prairie ponds within a 100-mile radius of the refuge.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Severe thunderstorms late last week prompted about $200,000 in emergency repairs at the newly expanded Bismarck Event Center.
Center Manager Charlie Jeske (JEHS’-kee) says a lobby area was flooded by several inches of water, and excess water also damaged six wooden doors and some electrical boxes.
The City Commission has approved money to cover the cost of repairs. City Commissioner Steve Marquardt inquired whether a design flaw in the $27 million expansion project led to the flooding.
Jeske said he’s awaiting a report from the architect who designed the facility’s expanded convention space. City Commissioner Josh Askvig says he thinks incomplete landscaping might have been a factor.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Minot man has pleaded guilty to federal drug and weapons charges.
Dustin Goettle is charged with six counts, including possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and felon in possession of a firearm. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Authorities say Goettle had 44 grams of methamphetamine in his pocket and a pistol in the waistband of his pants when he was arrested in March 2014. Authorities had been searching for Goettle for a week after he eluded law enforcement during a chase in the Bismarck area.
Sentencing is set for Sept. 28.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A former U.S. Marine Corps recruiter has been sentenced to 2 years in prison after admitting to setting several small fires at his workplace in North Dakota.
U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland sentenced Anthony DeGroot on Wednesday.
DeGroot pleaded guilty to destruction of government property in March. His plea came about a month after Hovland declared a mistrial because jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision on whether to convict DeGroot of arson.
Federal authorities had planned on retrying DeGroot, who was charged in January 2014 with setting the fires in December 2013, causing about $30,000 in damage.
DeGroot’s plea agreement states that after setting the fires, he duct-taped his wrists and mouth, walked out of the building pretending to be injured, and told police he was assaulted.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A task force set up to address what state officials say is a teacher shortage in North Dakota has begun meeting.
The group formed by the Department of Public Instruction met at the Capitol in Bismarck on Wednesday to begin brainstorming solutions both for the upcoming school year and for the long term.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Board of Higher Education has approved 3 percent raises for presidents at the state’s 11 public colleges and universities.
The highest salary is for retiring University of North Dakota President Robert Kelley, who will make $371,596 in his last year. North Dakota State University President Dean Bresciani will make $354,568.
Minot State’s Steven Shirley is the third-highest paid president at $257,500, followed by Dickinson State’s D.C. Coston at $224,359; Bismarck State’s Larry Skogen and North Dakota State College of Science’s John Richman, each at $201,896; Mayville State’s Gary Hagen at $196,201; Valley City State’s Tisa Mason at $195,700; Williston’s State’s Ray Nadolny at $188,798; and Lake Region State’s Doug Darling at $173,988.
New university system chancellor Mark Hagerott will make $372,000. He takes over next week.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Some members of the North Dakota Board of Higher Education say one way to cut down on expenses would be to hold more meetings remotely instead of in person.
Board member Don Morton, who works as the site leader at Microsoft in Fargo, is proposing that the board hold four face-to-face meetings a year and conduct other business by electronic means.
Board member Grant Shaft says it’s a good idea but the university system doesn’t yet have the technology to make it work. He says the current call-in system that the board uses is akin to Morse code.
Eric Murphy, faculty adviser to the board, is opposed to the plan. He says it’s important for board members to visit the campuses on a regular basis to see what’s going on.
