City Fire Chief Jim Reuther said there is an interest in Jamestown of having a daycare center of 30 or more. A group day care facility may NOT be in a house. Reuther said the Ordinance would be in line with the North Dakota Century Code.

Jamestown Police Detective Leroy Gross addressed the committee, with a proposal concerning wages, and training officers.

The police department has three training officers, who ride with new officers, and have additional duties.

He said some new Jamestown officers have yet to complete the Police Academy program, due to the timing of the training available.

He added that wages need to be adjusted to attract and retain officers.

WASHINGTON (AP)  Republican members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation say they will continue the fight to repeal the Affordable Care Act despite a Supreme Court ruling upholding a key part of it.

Sen John Hoeven and Rep. Kevin Cramer say President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul is a bad law that needs changing. Hoeven says the law is “increasing costs, reducing patient choice and burdening our economy.”

The Supreme Court’s decision Thursday means more than 14,000 low- and moderate-income North Dakota residents will retain health insurance premium subsidies provided through the Affordable Care Act.

Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp says the law should be improved but not repealed. She says “some parts of the health care reform law work.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Dickinson woman who helped sign up dozens of residents under the Affordable Care Act says many of them are finding it’s not so affordable.

Lydia DeJesus (deh-HAY’-soos) is among 17 navigators in North Dakota who helped uninsured residents learn about their options under President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

DeJesus says she’s neutral on the Supreme Court’s ruling on Thursday that will allow about 14,000 North Dakotans to continue getting a federal subsidy on their monthly premiums.

DeJesus says many people who never had health insurance before now have it. But she says even with the federal subsidies, some people are saying they still can’t afford it.

She says some people have told her that they’d rather pay a fine than have to purchase the health insurance.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Federal authorities have confirmed that law officers shot and killed a man on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation last week.

FBI spokesman Kyle Loven tells The Associated Press that 31-year-old Joseph Charboneau (SHAHR’-buh-noh) was killed during an altercation with Bureau of Indian Affairs officers on June 16.

Loven says the officers went to a residence to arrest another person, and an altercation ensued that resulted in Charboneau being shot. Loven says no one else was hurt.

The FBI is not releasing further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Charboneau’s family members say they haven’t received any information from authorities on what happened, and they’re frustrated. Charboneau has a criminal record and family members say he has done prison time but was trying to put his life back together.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Selfridge woman has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence of drugs with four children in her vehicle.

32-year-old Nikki Callousleg faces a misdemeanor charge that carries a maximum sentence of a year in prison. She’s scheduled for a jury trial Sept. 23.

Callousleg was arrested in Bismarck on Tuesday. Authorities say she had a 16-year-old child, two 6-year-olds and a 5-month-old in the vehicle. The children were released to relatives.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – Health insurance subsidies for more than 6.4 million people will continue, as a result of Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling upholding the subsidies at the heart of President Barack Obama’s health care law. It’s the second major victory for that law at the high court. And the presidential candidates have been quick to weigh in. Hillary Rodham Clinton says the ruling affirms that health insurance “should be affordable and available to all.” Republican Jeb Bush says the fight isn’t over — and that if he’s elected, he will work with Congress to repeal the law and replace it with a conservative version.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is getting ready to announce that he’s running for president in 2016. That’s according to two people familiar with his plans. They say the formal announcement will come on Tuesday at Christie’s old high school. The Republican governor has been laying the groundwork for months. Christie considered a bid in 2012 before deciding to pass on a campaign. He joins a field of more than a dozen major candidates for the GOP nomination.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – The family of suspected church gunman Dylann Roof has released a statement saying they know people are asking questions about him, but they do not want to say anything because victims’ families are still grieving. The first funerals began Thursday for some of the nine people killed in what police say was a racially motivated attack at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston last week.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) – A psychiatrist who interviewed James Holmes four days after the 2012 Colorado theater attack says Holmes was psychotic and suffering serious delusions. Jonathan Woodcock said Holmes’ emotions also were extremely flat. About midway through the two-hour jail interview, Woodcock says, Holmes said he was bored. That kind of reaction in the wake of the mass shooting helped Woodcock conclude that Holmes was suffering from significant mental illness. Two court-appointed psychiatrists concluded that Holmes was sane at the time of the attack. Woodcock testified today for the defense.

PORT WASHINGTON (AP) – The actor who played Screech on the TV show “Saved by the Bell” has been sentenced to four months in jail — after apologizing in court today for his part in a Wisconsin barroom stabbing.
