Valley City (CSi) The Valley City Commission met in Regular Session Tuesday evening at City Hall. All members were present.

A presentation was made by Valley City Fire Chief, Gary Retterath, of a Service Plaque to Keith Olson who has retired from the Valley City Fire Department after 37 years of service.

A presentation for Achievement was made by the Chief Retterath to Becky and Penny Capistran, who saved lives during a June 13th house fire in Valley City.

Becky called 9-1-1, and Penny saved a life by alerting and bringing a resident to safety.

Approved appointing Doreen Sayler to renew her position for the Renaissance Zone Board open position.

City Commissioners determined a dollar amount to be used for sidewalk repairs in the NW section of town and set and determined the percentage amount to be assessed to property owners. City Administrator Schelkoph asked for an amount of up to $90,000 with the city’s share of costs at 25%. The City Commissioners voted to approve.

Commissioners approved renewing VCSU’s Gaming Site Authorization’s for the locations at Valley City Eagles Club, Town and Country Club, W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse and VCSU Lokken Stadium.

The City Commission approved acquiring a burned out house at 626 4th Street Southwest.

The lot will be usable to build upon.

City Building/Fire Inspector Dave Andersen reminded residents to mow lawns, and that diseased tree stumps need to be taken out when trees are removed.

He said structures that have been burned or flooded will be taken down.

City Fire Chief Retterath reported that few complaints were made concerning fireworks, and one small fire was reported.

City Police Chief Thompson said, loud fireworks calls were responded to.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Engineer’s Office advises motorists that 4TH Ave SE between 2nd St & 3rd St SE WILL BE CLOSED from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 for street repairs.

Extreme caution should be used when entering the road construction areas.

Motorists and other traffic should use extreme caution when entering detoured areas. The public should consider alternate routes if possible.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Park Board has agreed to start contract talks with a risk management firm and created a committee to hire an owner’s representative to oversee construction management of the planned Two Rivers Activity Center Tuesday during a special meeting.

Jamestown-based Interstate Engineering offered the sole bid to provide owner’s representative services during development and construction of TRAC.

Commission Chairman Mike Landscoot said the contracting process could start with Interstate Engineering as long as proper notice of the bid was given and other firms had fair notice to apply.

In other business, the commission created a five-person selection committee to review firms that would bid for the construction management at-risk (CMAR) contract with the TRAC project.

Parks and Rec Director Doug Hogan says, more special meetings will be held, because the Park Board will need to make decisions in cetain areas

Jamestown (CSi) The World’s Largest Buffalo in Jamestown may be getting some refurbishing, and improvements to lighting and landscaping.

On Tuesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 Jamestown Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund said over the next few months, a committee will study ideas, which are also welcome from the public.

The committee will consist of the Tourism Board, the Frontier Village Association and other organizations that will also consider a fundraising campaign.

Swedlund also pointed out the joint venture that produced successful, recent, Hogs & Rods event in downtown Jamestown, bringing in a number of tourists.

He added that White Cloud Days this week and weekend in Jamestown will also be a tourist attraction, including the parade, and new events taking place at the National Buffalo Museum grounds, including a carnival and booths set up.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Police Department is warning Jamestown residents of a convicted sex offender, who is living within the City of Jamestown.

Eric Joseph Rudolph is residing at 403 First Avenue North, Jamestown, ND

He is a 44 year old white male five feet eight inches tall, weighing 280 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair.

Rudolph has been assigned a high risk assessment by the North Dakota Risk Level Committee, of the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office.

Rudolph was convicted on August 31, 2004 in Dickey County District Court of Gross Sexual Imposition involving a four year old girl.

Disposition: Five years with three years of supervised probation.

Rudolph is not wanted by police at this time and has served the sentence imposed by the court.

This notification is meant for public safety and not to increase fear in the community, nor should this information be used to threaten, assault, or intimidate the offender.

Any attempts to harass, intimidate or threaten these offenders, their families, landlords, or employers will be turned over for prosecution.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Fire Department is will hold its 5th annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser, Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the City Fire Hall.

The breakfast will be from 7-a.m., to noon.

City Fire Chief Jim Reuther, funds raised will go toward the costs of new equipment.

Since the first year of the event, when about 700 individuals came for pancakes, the event has steadily grown.

Reuther says the breakfast is a way for individuals to learn more about the firefighters, see the station, and show their support.

Tickets are $7 for an individual and $20 for families.

Tickets can be purchased from any Jamestown Firefighter or at the door.

Valley City (CSi) Almost $35,000 was raised during the annual Barnes County Relay for Life event held June 19, 2015, in Valley City.

More than 200 people on nine teams participated

Co-event coordinator Lisa McCulloch says $4,200 was raised during the Ford Motor Company Drive 4 UR Community event held by Stoudt Ross Ford on June 20 to benefit the Relay for Life.

Another $3,300 was raised by Valley City High School Student Casidy Tibke over several weeks to benefit the American Cancer Society and Barnes County Relay for Life.

 

Carrington (CSi) The Foster County Commission will hold a special meeting on July 9th, at 9-a.m., to discuss an opening on the county commission.

Foster County Auditor Casey Cables, says recently elected chairman Bill Bauer put in his resignation on June 2nd and left at the end of the month. Bauer had served 6 months in the position before resigning due to health reasons.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – No one was hurt in a fire at a Fargo hotel that is being remodeled.

Guests in the Biltmore Hotel and Suites were evacuated for a short time after firefighters responded to the scene shortly after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. The guests were allowed back in their rooms after hotel staff verified that no one was staying in the east wing near the fire.

Fire crews extinguished a blaze in a space between an existing exterior wall and a new wall being constructed as part of the remodeling. The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.

A damage estimate was not immediately available, but officials say the fire was contained to a small area and shouldn’t affect the function of the hotel.

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Law enforcement authorities are searching for a North Dakota inmate who didn’t return to jail after going to his authorized work.

Authorities on Tuesday said 28-year-old Thomas Bott was in work-release status when he failed to return to the Ward County Jail Monday afternoon.  Bott is now in “escape” status.

Bott was in jail for a probation violation resulting from a burglary conviction.

Bott is described as a white male with blonde hair and blue eyes. He is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs approximately 165 pounds.

Authorities ask that people with information about Bott’s whereabouts contact the Ward County sheriff’s office.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Two of three inmates who walked away from a Bismarck halfway house are in custody in Minot.

Minot police say they were notified early Monday that Brady Werre, Bryce Molina and Adam Boppre were missing from the Bismarck Transition Center. Officers acting on a tip apprehended Werre and Molina at a mobile home park later in the day.

Police also arrested a 20-year-old Minot woman accused of helping Werre and Molina. Formal charges were pending.

Boppre is still missing.

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The judge presiding over the case of a North Dakota woman whose 13-year-old son died weighing just 21 pounds rejected the plea deal struck by her defense and prosecutors.

North Central District Judge Gary Lee on Tuesday said he couldn’t accept the terms of the deal that called for Jessica Jensen to spend 16 years in prison.

The 36-year-old Kenmare woman pleaded guilty to murder and neglect charges in April.

She was charged in March 2014 after a state medical examiner ruled her son died from chronic starvation due to untreated juvenile appetite disorder. His death was ruled a homicide.

Jensen initially told investigators her son had a hormonal growth problem and his pituitary gland didn’t function properly. She said he hadn’t seen a doctor for years.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck man charged with sexually assaulting two teenage girls has pleaded not guilty to five felony counts.

Thirty-six-year-old Fabian Harrison is accused of assaulting 14- and 15-year-old girls. He could face life in prison without parole if convicted of the most serious charges against him.

Judge Sonna Anderson set a three-day trial in each case. The first trial is to begin Oct. 7 and the second trial on Oct. 13.

 

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A Mandan teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Thirty-five-year-old Amanda Kolosky was to appear in court Tuesday on a felony charge of corrupting a minor, but the hearing was canceled after her attorney notified the court that she intends to plead guilty in the case.

Kolosky could face up to five years in prison. Her next court appearance has not been scheduled.

Kolosky is a special education teacher at Mandan High School. Authorities allege she had sex with a male student.

The school district put Kolosky on administrative leave in May. The school board this week suspended her without pay and will decide later whether to fire her.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Federal authorities have charged a man accused of dealing methamphetamine in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Arnulfo Ramos pleaded not guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance. A trial date has not been set.

Authorities say Ramos and others distributed large quantities of meth during an 18-month period beginning in January 2014.

Court documents do not list an attorney for Ramos.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The owner and manager of a Bismarck skate shop are on trial on various charges related to a large synthetic drug case.

Discontent owner Thomas Teply, of Moorhead, Minnesota, and manager Steven Johnson, of Bismarck, are accused of operating a business where synthetic drugs were sold.

They’ve pleaded not guilty. If convicted, Teply could receive up to 30 years in prison, and Johnson could get up to 45 years. The trial is scheduled to last the rest of the week.

Bismarck police busted the business in June 2012. Authorities also initially charged eight store clerks. The charges were dropped after the clerks agreed to cooperate with the state investigation, including possibly testifying.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Higher education officials are reviewing law enforcement policies after the state Supreme Court ruled that a North Dakota State University police officer did not have the power to arrest a woman for drunken driving off campus. Justices say an agreement by NDSU and the city of Fargo to share police powers did not give NDSU officer Ryan Haskell the authority to stop Morgan Kroschel after she allegedly made an illegal turn outside of campus. Kroschel was then arrested for driving under the influence.

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation says the University of North Dakota has been awarded a $207,000 federal grant for oral health research.

The delegation says the research money for the Grand Forks school comes from the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

The delegation says improving oral health is an important part of overall wellness. They say the federal funds will equip researchers at UND with the resources necessary to support the research.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Kevin Garnett is returning for season No. 21. A person with direct knowledge of the discussions says Garnett has agreed to terms on a two-year contract to remain in Minnesota. Garnett starred in Minnesota for the first 12 years of his career before being traded to Boston in 2007. He returned last February in a trade deadline deal with the Brooklyn Nets.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State University track and field standout Erin Teschuk is a national champion in her native Canada. The junior from Manitoba won the title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the recent Canadian Track and Field Championships in Edmonton, Alberta. Her winning time set a meet record.

LONDON (AP) – Today’s Wimbledon schedule is highlighted by men’s quarterfinal action. Top seed Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch) takes on Marin Cilic (CHIHL’-ihch) in the second match at Centre Court after third seed Andy Murray faces Vasek Pospisil (PAHS’-pah-sihl). CAMBRAI, France (AP) – German rider Tony Martin has won the fourth stage of the Tour de France to take the overall lead.

Martin started the day in second place overall, one second behind Britain’s Chris Froome.

He now leads Froome by 12 seconds and American Tejay Van Garderen by 25 seconds.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) – The U.S. men’s soccer team has opened its CONCACAF (KAHN’-kah-kaf) Gold Cup title defense by beating Honduras 2-1 in Frisco, Texas. Clint Dempsey scored twice on headers set up by Michael Bradley, who wore the captain’s arm band in his 100th international appearance. Dempsey tallied in the 25th and 64th minutes to put the Americans up 2-0.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – The PGA of America is moving its Grand Slam of Golf from Donald Trump’s golf course in Los Angeles.

Trump says he met with the PGA of America and both sides agreed it would be best to not play the 36-hole exhibition at Trump National Golf Club.

The Republican presidential candidate has come under fire for calling Mexican immigrant criminals and rapists. That has prompted several businesses to cut ties with Trump.

The 36-hole Grand Slam of Golf is for the major champions of the year.

UNDATED (AP) – Scott Stallings has been suspended for three months for violating the PGA Tour’s anti-doping policy.

Stallings says in a statement that he took a supplement to help with chronic fatigue in February. He says when he realized it was on the tour’s list of banned substances, he notified the tour.

Stallings is the third player to be suspended since the anti-doping policy began in 2008. The 30-year old is the first PGA Tour winner to be suspended.

NBA-WARRIORS-CELTICS TRADE…

UNDATED (AP) – A person with knowledge of the deal says the Golden State Warriors are sending forward David Lee to the Boston Celtics for Gerald Wallace.

Lee is due to make $15.4 million next season and became expendable following the emergence of Draymond Green. The former All-Star played the fewest minutes of his career and averaged just 7.9 points per game, the lowest since his rookie year with the Knicks in 2005-06.

Wallace barely got off the bench for the Celtics and averaged 1.1 points a game last season.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) – The head of France’s central bank says he fears the “collapse” of the Greek economy and “chaos” if Greece doesn’t strike a deal by Sunday with European creditors. The French bank chief says the European Central Bank has been supporting Greek banks for months, but it’s “an abnormal situation that can no longer last.” Greece has submitted its request for a rescue deal from Europe’s bailout fund but now needs to present a detailed reform plan for its economy by the end of the day tomorrow.

BAGHDAD (AP) – Twenty four Islamic State militants have been sentenced to death in Iraq for their role in the killing of 1,700 soldiers when IS extremists captured Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit in summer 2014. The soldiers had been trying to flee from a nearby army base. Inside the court room today, some victims’ relatives burst into tears while others chanted “Allahu Akbar.”

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – The U.S. and the United Arab Emirates are launching a joint social media effort to counter the Islamic State group’s online propaganda. The two governments say a new digital communications center in the UAE’s capital became operational today. The U.S. and the UAE say the aim is to “amplify moderate and tolerant voices from across the region.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – Federal law enforcement officials are pressing their concerns about encryption before Congress today. FBI Director James Comey and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates will make a case to the Senate Judiciary Committee that the right to privacy is not absolute. According to excerpts of her prepared remarks, Yates plans to tell the committee that the federal government’s inability to access encrypted communications presents a “real national security and public safety problem.”

BALTIMORE (AP) – Baltimore police say four people were shot, three fatally, near the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus last night. A statement on the school’s website says campus police reported that two gunmen in two vans fired into a group of people. A university police spokesman says there’s no indication students were involved.
