Jamestown (CSi) The Stutsman County Commission appointed Chairman Mark Klose and member Dave Schultz to a committee to look into options for the future of the Stutsman County Correctional Center.
Klose and Schultz represent the Commission on the Stutsman County Correctional Center Governing Authority Board.
The City of Jamestown also has representatives on the committee, Mayor Katie Andersen and Councilman Ramone Gumke, were approved by the City Council.
Also on the committee are: Stutsman County COO/Auditor, Casey Bradley, Stutsman County Correctional Center Director Chad Jackson, Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser and Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger.
The committee will compile a request for proposals for architectural services looking into the costs of constructing an addition to the correctional center.
Information will be gathered before making any recommendation about expanding the current correctional center or building a new one.
Bradley told the City Council and the County Commission that the correctional center can house up to 96 inmates. For the correctional center to pay for itself, there has to be 48 paying inmates housed per day to cover the center’s operational cost of $1.15 million based on a fee of $65 per day per inmate housed.
However, the jail is seeing more local inmates, and the state requires that the county house local inmates at no cost to the inmate.
Bradley said by the end of the year the projected revenue shortfall, is about $379,600.
GREAT BEND, N.D. (AP) – Fire has destroyed a motor home on Interstate 29 in North Dakota, causing traffic to back up for miles.
The blaze started around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday near the Great Bend exit south of Wahpeton. Traffic was shut down on the southbound lane near mile marker 18.
Two unidentified people from Parker, South Dakota, were inside the motor home when the fire began and got out safely.
The station reports authorities haven’t determined what caused the motor home to catch on fire.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The lawyer for the Iowa man accused of robbing a Fargo hotel and shooting at police says the case could be moved to federal court.
Thirty-year-old Eric Webb, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, appeared in court Wednesday.
Defense attorney Patrick Rosenquist says it would be “inappropriate” for him to comment why federal prosecutors could choose to indict Webb, but Rosenquist adds it has been related to him that that could be the case.
Webb was injured in a shootout with police on June 4, after authorities allege he robbed a hotel. Webb is charged with robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.
About two weeks after the incident, a newspaper reported receiving a letter from Webb admitting to shooting first at police. Authorities believe the letter is authentic.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Williston man is accused of stabbing another man and leading police on a chase.
Twenty-three-year-old Anthony Casaus allegedly stabbed the man after a fight on July 1, then fled in a vehicle and later on foot, eluding officers in the darkness.
Police tracked him to a house and arrested him. They also seized more than $13,000 in cash, silver bars, drugs and paraphernalia from the home.
Casaus faces aggravated assault, fleeing and drug charges that could put him in prison for more than 11 years if he’s convicted. Court documents don’t list an attorney for him. A home telephone number for him couldn’t be found.
Three others also face charges in the case.
Police say the stabbing victim is recovering in a Bismarck hospital.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Health Department says a barrel of natural gas liquids spilled at a gathering pipeline and entered a tributary to Dry Fork Creek in Williams County.
North Dakota Water Quality Director Karl Rockeman says the spill was reported Saturday by pipeline owner Hess Tioga Gas Plant LLC.
Rockeman says state inspectors and cleanup contractors were on scene Wednesday, about 10 miles south of Tioga. He says contaminated water and soil were being removed from the site.
Rockeman says he doesn’t expect any environmental damage.
Condensate is a byproduct of natural gas production. A barrel is 42 gallons.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Petroleum Council is moving its annual meeting outside the western oil patch to the state’s biggest city of Fargo.
Organizers say it’s a chance to explain issues facing the industry and to tout business opportunities in the eastern part of the state.
The annual meeting is slated for Sept. 22-23 and costs $600 for nonmembers to attend. A free event that’s open to the public is set for Sept. 21.
The oil industry trade group represents more than 500 companies doing business in North Dakota’s oil patch.
Organizers say the annual meeting is expected to draw about 800 people.
Tourism officials say the meeting is expected to inject about $180,000 into the local economy.
The group held its annual meeting in Grand Forks two years ago.
NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) – The Three Affiliated Tribes is expanding its 4 Bears Casino near New Town.
KXMC-TV reports that additions include a grand ballroom, a slot machine room and a new event center. The old event center is being converted into the ballroom, which will have a seating area to accommodate more than 400 people.
General Manager Patrick Packineau says the slot machine room will be “state of the art,” with an air vent system designed to remove cigarette smoke.
The new 85,000-square-foot event center will hold about 4,000 people. Packineau says it will enable the casino to bring in bigger entertainment acts.
The ballroom and expanded gambling floor should be ready by the end of the month. The new event center is scheduled for completion in July 2016.
In world and national news….
NEW YORK (AP) – After an outage of more than three hours caused by technical problems, officials at the New York Stock Exchange have been able to get in some more trading before the closing bell. The exchange isn’t saying what the problem was, but describes it as an internal issue and not the result of a breach of its systems. There was no interruption at the dozens of other U.S. stock exchanges, so investors were still able to buy and sell stocks easily.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Federal Reserve policymakers have been looking for more signs of improvement in the economy before they start to raise interest rates. That’s evident from the minutes of last month’s discussions. They show that while one Fed official was ready to start raising rates, most of the others believed that conditions weren’t yet ripe for an increase.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) – The Washington Redskins say they will appeal a decision from a federal judge, who has ordered the cancellation of the team’s trademark registration. The judge ruled that the team name may be disparaging to Native Americans. The ruling doesn’t keep the team from using the Redskins name. And it could even sue for trademark infringements. But winning such a lawsuit could be harder, without the legal protections that come with a federally-registered trademark.
NEW YORK (AP) – The entertainer who has emerged as Bill Cosby’s most prominent defender this week has an angry message for her critics — telling them to “back off.” Whoopi Goldberg said on ABC’s “The View” today that she’s received threats since she expressed support for Cosby on Tuesday. She says she takes sexual assault very seriously, but also believes a person is innocent until proven guilty. And she says Cosby “has not been taken to jail or tried on anything.”
LOS ANGELES (AP) – The long-expected moment when Latinos surpass whites as California’s largest racial or ethnic group has arrived. According to U.S. Census Bureau figures released in late June, Hispanic Californians began to narrowly outnumber white Californians sometime in the first half of last year. As of July 1, 2014, the state had about 15 million Latinos to about 14.9 million non-Hispanic whites. Demographers had expected the shift for decades as the state’s Hispanic population boomed due to immigration and birth rates. California joins New Mexico as the second state with a Latino plurality.
