WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota health officials are investigating a cluster of E. coli cases in which all ill individuals attended a fair.

The Department of Health says the three cases involve individuals younger than 18 years old who reported attending the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo. The fair ran July 7 through 12.

State epidemiologist Michelle Feist says officials are in the early stages of the investigation. She says individuals who experience diarrhea or bloody diarrhea for over 24 hours within 10 days of attending the fair should contact health officials.

     E. coli is a bacterial infection that can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea and vomiting.

Officials say one of the ill individuals has been diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe complication that can cause kidney damage and failure.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota has broken ground for a new headquarters for its College of Engineering and Mines.

UND’s petroleum engineering program started with four students in 2010 and is expecting as many as 350 students this fall. The new complex also will house the Institute for Energy Studies that UND established five years ago.

The Blue Angels team hasn’t performed at the AirSho since 2011.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A marketing campaign in the oil patch hub of Williston is putting a positive spin on what would appear to be negatives.

The  the city contracted with a Bismarck-based company to produce marketing videos. The first launched in May and generated more than 25,000 YouTube views in less than a week.

Williston’s population has doubled since 2010 as people from around the country have flocked to the region in search of jobs. Resulting issues such as rising crime and skyrocketing apartment rents have led to some negative perceptions.

The marketing campaign dubbed “Last Great Place for Opportunity” focuses on city strengths. For example, it touts major infrastructure projects made necessary by the booming population, and it spotlights diversification that has resulted from an influx of outsiders.

Keillor says he’ll remain as executive producer and the show will continue to have a Midwestern feel. But his weekly monologue and recurring skits, such as private eye Guy Noir and hapless cowboys Dusty and Lefty, won’t be part of it.

Keillor says he has “a lot of other things that I want to do.”

In sports…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota wildlife officials say the ruffed grouse population in the state is up dramatically this year.

A Game and Fish Department spring survey indicated a 44 percent jump in ruffed grouse statewide over 2014. The number of male grouse heard drumming in the Pembina Hills was up 86 percent, and the Turtle Mountains saw a 35 percent increase.

In world and national news…

HAVANA (AP) – There’s been a carnival atmosphere Moday outside the new U.S. Embassy in Havana. It’s the first day of the new normalized relations between the United States and Cuba. And U.S. and Cuban diplomats in Washington and Havana noted the upgrade to embassy status in social media posts. By mid-morning, the Cuban government had pulled back several of the eight or so security guards who had stood watch over what is now the U.S. embassy.

WASHINGTON (AP) – One Senate supporter of normalized relations with Cuba says the United States can’t only have embassies in countries it agrees with. Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont says if that were the case, “we would have to close half of our current embassies.” But another Democrat, Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, says he’d rather see the U.S. flag raised over a Cuba where “the Cuban people are free” and “have their human rights respected.”

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A lawyer for three women suing Bill Cosby for defamation says the release of his testimony from a decade ago destroys Cosby as a public moralist. In a deposition, Cosby talked about decades of affairs with women and giving women quaaludes (KWAY’-loodz) for the purpose of having sex with them. He said in the question-and-answer session that he gave the drug in the 1970s to a woman who is now suing Cosby for defamation. Her lawyer, Joseph Cammarata, calls the documents a “treasure trove of admissions” by Cosby.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Doctors say an 18-year-old French teen who was born with the AIDS virus has had her infection under control and nearly undetectable — even though she stopped treatment 12 years ago. That is an unprecedented remission for someone with HIV. At least a dozen adults have had remissions for an average of 10 years, but the new French case is said to be the first long-lasting one that started in childhood. The teen might have some form of natural resistance to HIV that hasn’t yet been discovered.
