VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – One person died when a pickup truck towing a camper went out of control on Interstate 94 west of Valley City.

The Highway Patrol says the truck and camper rolled in the median about 11 a.m. Tuesday. A 61-year-old woman identified as Cynthia Elhard of Gackle, driving the pickup, died at the scene. She lost control in the eastbound lane and rolled the pickup and camper into the median.

A 49-year-old female passenger, Shonda Henry of Streeter was treated at Mercy CHi Hospital in Valley City and released. The truck and camper were destroyed in the crash.

Investigating were: NDHP, Barnes County SO, Valley City PD, Valley City FD, assisting, Barnes County Ambulance.

 

Valley City (CSi) A meeting will be held next week to discuss the future of the Valley City VFW Club.

The meeting will be on August 11, 2015, at 7-p.m.

VFW Club Post Commander Ron Tolstad says all VFW members to attend this meeting as members will discuss a number of options concerning the future of the club.

The VFW has recently made some changes, including reducing hours of operation from 6 days to 3 days a week.

Breakfast is still served Monday through Friday.

 

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – West Fargo police say two people used cinder blocks to help themselves to bottles of booze from a local liquor store. Authorities say the two suspects threw the cinder blocks through a window at Liquor Mart shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday and made off with several bottles of alcohol. Investigators are reviewing the surveillance video to try to identify suspects.
 

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – A Texas man is accused of using a vehicle and a gun to threaten people at a party in Watford City. Authorities allege Waylon Palmore pointed his pickup at a group of partiers across the street from his mobile home early Sunday and revved the engine. Palmore also allegedly pointed a handgun at the group. Palmore faces a felony terrorizing charge with a maximum sentence of five years.

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The suspect in a slaying in Minot a year ago says he feels threatened in jail and wants to be moved to another lockup, but the judge in the case wants more evidence.
 
     Anthony Campbell is accused of killing 25-year-old Shannon Brunelle, who was found dead in a garage at an apartment building on Sept. 15, 2014. Campbell was arrested last November in Philadelphia.
 
     Defense Attorney Samuel Gereszek says Campbell has filed more than 50 complaints about alleged mistreatment by Ward County jail staff and inmates with ties to Brunelle. State’s Attorney Rosa Larson says she hasn’t been made aware of any threats.
 
     Judge Richard Hagar said he’ll consider Campbell’s request if he receives evidence of problems.
 
     Hagar refused to lower Campbell’s $500,000 bond and scheduled trial for mid-January.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A husband and wife in Bismarck have each been charged with felony aggravated for allegedly assaulting a woman, causing her to suffer permanent brain damage.
 
     Joshua and Bethany Evans are both accused of assaulting a 28-year-old Bismarck woman.
 
     Authorities say Joshua Evans and the woman left the Sports Page bar on July 1 and planned to return to Evans’ home. When the woman told Evans she would drive her own car, he allegedly punched her in the face.
 
     Authorities say the woman then drove to Evan’s house, where Bethany Evans allegedly attacked the woman.
 
     Police say the woman suffered multiple injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.
 
  Neither Evans is in custody.
 
     A message left at Joshua Evans home was not immediately returned.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A plea agreement has been reached in the killing of a woman on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.
 
     Thirty-year-old Lance Summers pleaded guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder in the death last year of 38-year-old Natalie White Lightening of Cannon Ball.
 
     The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison but the plea deal calls for 10 years.
 
     U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland told Summers he would not make any promises whether he would accept the deal. Sentencing has been set for November.
 
     White Lightening was last seen by friends on March 17, 2014 and her body was discovered more than a month later by two people walking through a field on the 2.3 million-acre reservation that straddles North Dakota and South Dakota.

 

  BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A member of South Dakota’s Rosebud Sioux tribe who pleaded guilty to leaving her two young daughters to die on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota is spending her time before sentencing in a halfway house in Mandan.
 
     Michelle Wounded Face will be sentenced Sept. 2 on child abuse and neglect charges to which she pleaded guilty in June. Authorities say Wounded Face last January abandoned her 2- and 4-year-old daughters in a car in a rural area. They survived.
 
     Wounded Face said later she was under the influence of drugs.
 
     Wounded Face made a request to stay with a woman whom she met in a Jamestown jail, but her attorney later withdrew it. The federal public defender’s office isn’t commenting on the request or why it was withdrawn.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A record number of University of North Dakota students are eligible to take part in the school’s summer commencement.
 
     The graduation ceremony is 3 p.m. Friday in the Chester Fritz Auditorium on campus. UND says 547 students are eligible to get their diplomas, surpassing the previous high of 532 in 2006.
 
     UND President Robert Kelley will preside over his eighth and final summer commencement ceremony. He’s retiring in January.

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota State Bison enter the season with a luxury they haven’t enjoyed in their previous four seasons as Football Championship Subdivision winners: Their entire coaching staff is back. The Bison also return one of the top quarterbacks in the country in senior Carson Wentz. He says the return of the coaching staff is a testament to the tradition of the program.

 

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says there’s no reason for the league not to keep holding outdoor games each season. Bettman made a promotional appearance Wednesday at the University of Minnesota football stadium. That’s where the Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks will play outside February 21st as part of the NHL’s Stadium Series games.

 

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) – The attorney for Adrian Peterson says the Minnesota Vikings star running back is off probation early for injuring his 4-year-old son.
 
     Rusty Hardin says Peterson finished one-third of his probation and its terms, which allowed him to apply for early termination. Peterson is done with probation nine months after he pleaded no contest to recklessly injuring his son by striking him with a wooden switch. Hardin says a judge in Texas agreed that Peterson fulfilled the requirements of his probation and signed the early termination order late last week.
 
     Peterson’s probation also included 80 hours of community service, a $4,000 fine and counseling. Peterson has rejoined the Vikings at training camp in Mankato after playing only the first game of the 2014 season.

 TORONTO (AP) – Jose Bautista hit a grand slam as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 9-7 Wednesday night for their fourth straight win. Encarnacion hit a three-run drive and Donaldson added a two-run shot. Toronto has homered in 17 of 18 games since the All-Star break. Miguel Sano homered and had three RBIs for the Twins.

CLEVELAND (AP) – The Cavaliers have finalized their contract with free-agent forward Richard Jefferson. He has averaged 13.9 points in his career and appeared in 105 playoff games. Last season, he averaged 5.8 points and 16.8 minutes in Dallas.

     UNDATED (AP) – Las Vegas and Quebec City have advanced to the second of three phases in their bids to land NHL expansion franchises. Both bidding groups made the announcement through social media as they hope to expand the league to 32 teams, although the league isn’t expected to add teams for at least two more seasons. The Las Vegas group has already secured more than 13,200 season-ticket deposits for a potential team, and Quebec City is about to open a publicly-funded, 18,259-seat venue next month.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) – Malaysia’s transport minister says a maintenance seal and other details prove that the part of a plane wing found on an Indian Ocean island belongs to missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. He says a maintenance seal on the flaperon matches the airline’s records. U.S., French and Australia authorities are stopping short of confirming that the wing part found along Reunion island is from the March 8, 2014 flight that carried 239 passengers and crew. 
 
     ROME (AP) – Military vessels and aircraft from several countries are searching waters off Libya for a second day for any more survivors from an overturned boat crowded with migrants. With seas warm and calm, rescuers are hoping that others might be alive, a day after a 66-foot-long fishing boat capsized as rescuers approached. In the first hours after the accident, 367 survivors were rescued and 25 bodies were recovered.        
 
     SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) – Police in northwest Louisiana plan today to release the name of the officer killed last night while responding to a report of a suspicious person inside a home. Police say they also believe they know who shot the officer, and they’re getting a warrant for his arrest. Police say the gunman apparently was inside the home and was threatening to harm people.      
 
     LAKEPORT, Calif. (AP) – Crews in Northern California are gaining ground against a massive wildfire that’s destroyed numerous buildings and driven thousands of people from their homes. Officials say the blaze that’s scorched more than 100 square miles is 30 percent contained. Firefighters and equipment from outside the state poured in to battle the blaze burning about 100 miles north of San Francisco.   
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – A Stradivarius violin stolen 35 years ago from renowned musician Roman Totenberg has been recovered and will finally be returned to his family. Totenberg bought the violin in 1943 for $15,000. His daughter, NPR correspondent Nina Totenberg says the violin was recovered after the former wife of an aspiring violinist took the instrument to an appraiser in New York. The woman’s husband died in 2011 and she’s not accused of any wrongdoing. Roman Totenberg died three years ago. The FBI plans to hold a news conference today.
