BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Majority leaders in North Dakota’s House and Senate say the state’s oil savings account is safe from attack in the next Legislature.
Senate majority leader Rich Wardner and House majority leader Al Carlson spoke to The Associated Press before legislative leaders met to debate voters’ intent when they changed the constitution to sock away some of the state’s newfound oil wealth.
None of the money from the state’s Legacy Fund can be spent until 2017, and only then if the Legislature decides by a two-thirds vote to dip into it. But Increasingly there’s been talk of smashing the state’s piggy bank that was once thought to be near impenetrable.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Food banks nationwide are dealing with rising demand despite the growing economy, leading some charities to reduce the amount they offer each family. U.S. food banks are expected to give away about 4 billion pounds of food this year. Feeding America, the nation’s primary food bank network, says that’s more than double the amount provided a decade ago. Some economists say the increased demand is surprising because the economy is growing and unemployment has been cut nearly in half since the recession. But many people who have found jobs are working only part-time or for low wages, and others have stopped looking for work.
