Christine, the first runner-up at the May 2015 pageant, has agreed to assume the title and represent the State of North Dakota in 2015. The second runner-up, Shannon Smith-Eidson, has also agreed to assume the role and responsibilities of the first runner-up. Sadly, these changes were necessitated when Hope Adam, originally crowned Mrs. North Dakota/America 2015, recently informed me and our executive committee that she would not be able to fulfill her obligations to the State title, and we reluctantly accepted her stepping down.
As the new Mrs. North Dakota/America, Christine will now begin her journey to represent North Dakota as our State Delegate at the 2015 Mrs. America Pageant, scheduled to be held in Las Vegas, NV, on September 20th -24th, 2015. As the new State Delegate, Christine is eligible for the Fabulous Face Contest being conducted on the Mrs. America website. The winner of the contest will secure a place in the Top 10 during the Finals at the National Pageant.
As the first runner-up, Shannon may now compete in a contest for the First-Runner-ups from every state to compete for the title of Mrs. National First Runner Up. The winner of that contest will secure a spot at the Mrs. America Pageant to compete along with the State Delegates for the title of Mrs. America 2016 in
Las Vegas next month. You can place your votes by going to: www.mrsamerica.com .
Please join us in congratulating and supporting Christine and Shannon and in wishing Hope all the best.

A GoFundMe page is set up to help the family offset expenses.
The family returned home last Sunday evening to find its two Great Pyrenees, Gracie and Georgia, severely injured.

Jamestown (CSi) University of Jamestown President Robert Badal has announced that Dr. Bruce Chehroudi will join the University of Jamestown faculty as Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chair of the Department of Engineering and Mathematics.
Earlier this spring, the University of Jamestown announced an expansion to offer a mechanical engineering program in the fall of 2016. From a state and national perspective the timing is right to pursue development of the program due to high demand and interest from students.
Dr. Chehroudi has extensive experience in higher education, most recently serving as the Director of Research, Development, & Education for Advanced Technology Consultants.
His previous positions include Associate Professor and Director of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Kettering University, and Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois.
Dr. Chehroudi completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Southern Methodist University, where he earned an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering as well. He also holds an M.S. in Economics from the Swiss Finance Institute and an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Science and Technology.
Badal says, “Dr. Cheroudi is a distinguished academic leader who will build an outstanding program that integrates engineering studies with our Liberal Arts tradition.”
In accepting this position, Dr. Chehroudi says, “I knew that this was the place in which all my experiences, expertise, and creativity would resonate with others to build the next generation of engineering education that addresses the current and future needs at the regional, national, and international levels. There are so many tangible evidences reflecting the strategic direction of the top visionary leaders at the University of Jamestown. I am very excited and honored to join the University and be part of the team materializing the engineering vision and building upon a solid foundation.”
The University will be offering a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a supporting program, such as Design Engineering Technology. The university plans to seek specialized programmatic accreditation. Currently, there is space in the university’s Sorkness Center for offices, labs, and classrooms with plans for renovation and new construction being considered.
Chehroudi will begin employment at University of Jamestown on September 14, 2015.
The University of Jamestown was established in 1883 and is ranked as a top tier regional school in US News and World Report and a top Midwestern school in The Princeton Review. The school features development of the whole person through its distinctive Journey to Success experience.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Boardings at North Dakota’s eight commercial service airports in July dropped about 4 percent from the previous year.
The state Aeronautics Commission reports Dickinson had the biggest percentage drop, of just under 30 percent. Minot saw the biggest drop in actual passengers, with about 3,700 fewer boardings than in July 2014.
Airports in Fargo, Grand Forks and Williston also saw decreases over the year, while airports in Bismarck, Devils Lake and Jamestown saw increases.
Officials have cited slumping oil activity and a weaker Canadian dollar as reasons for drops in boardings in recent months.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Milwaukee woman accused of being part of a prostitution ring in the western North Dakota oil patch has pleaded not guilty.
Authorities allege 38-year-old Rasheda Ross was involved in a commercial sex operation that advertised online and did business out of a Williston hotel.
Ross on Thursday pleaded not guilty to a felony human trafficking charge that carries a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison.
Ross is scheduled to stand trial the week of Sept. 21 on that charge and on a criminal conspiracy charge for allegedly being involved with another woman in an extortion attempt. That charge carries the same maximum punishment.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota oil drillers nearly matched the state’s oil production record in June, despite slipping crude prices.
The Department of Mineral Resources says the state produced an average of 1.21 million barrels of oil daily in June, up slightly from May. The June production was 16,000 barrels per day less than the record set in December.
North Dakota also produced a record 1.6 million cubic feet of natural gas in June.
The June tally is the latest figure available because oil production numbers typically lag at least two months.
Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says the number of wells targeting the Bakken and Three Forks formations surpassed 10,000 in June. Helms says that’s one-sixth of the estimated potential.
North Dakota sweet crude was fetching $28.50 a barrel Friday morning.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Flour millers from Caribbean countries are visiting four states next week to learn more about U.S. wheat and the country’s supply system.
U.S. Wheat Associates is sponsoring the visit in cooperation with the Foreign Agriculture Service and state wheat commissions in North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Louisiana.
Officials say the wheat buyers from Guyana, Haiti, St. Vincent and Trinidad are either new to the industry or have a history of purchasing wheat from U.S. competitors. They say the trip is an opportunity to grow U.S. market share in the Caribbean.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A livestock disease that’s spread from southern states to as far north as South Dakota has officials concerned in North Dakota, where vesicular stomatitis hasn’t been diagnosed for eight decades.
Infected horses and cattle have been found this year in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona and South Dakota. South Dakota now has 13 confirmed or suspected cases, after not having a case for more than 30 years.
The disease is rarely fatal but can cause economic hardship for animal owners. North Dakota’s Board of Animal Health has implemented expanded requirements for livestock imports from states with the disease.
South Dakota did the same earlier but it didn’t keep the disease out of that state. Officials are stressing good sanitation and biosecurity measures to help prevent a widespread outbreak.
In world and national news…
HAVANA (AP) – The top diplomats of Cuba and the U.S. are describing some of the hard issues that lie ahead, following the raising of the U.S. flag over the Havana embassy after a 54-year diplomatic break. High among them are mutual claims for damages. Cuba says its claims for damages caused by the long U.S. economic embargo must be considered at the same time as U.S. claims for property taken by the communist government. Each side estimates its claims run well into the billions of dollars. Secretary of State John Kerry says one issue not on the table is the future of the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo in eastern Cuba.
WASHINGTON (AP) – According to several government experts, neither of the two emails that were sent to Hillary Rodham Clinton that have now been labeled by intelligence agencies as “top secret” contained information that would appear to be particularly sensitive. One email included a discussion of a U.S. drone strike — part of a covert program that is widely known and discussed. U.S. officials say the second email could have improperly referred to highly classified material — but it also could have reflected information that was collected independently.
BRUSSELS (AP) – Greece’s partners in the euro currency are debating whether to give that country billions of dollars in new loans, now that the Greek parliament has passed a package of painful reforms and spending cuts. The bailout would prevent a default by Greece on its debts — as soon as next week — that could force it out of Europe’s joint currency. Arriving for a meeting of finance ministers in Brussels, Germany’s finance chief expressed optimism that the currency group would approve the new loans.
DURANGO, Colo. (AP) – Officials in Colorado have reopened the Animas River to boating, more than a week after 3 million gallons of contaminated wastewater laced with heavy metals spilled into the popular waterway. La Plata County, which includes the city of Durango, announced today that kayakers, rafters and tubers could go back on the river. The state has already cleared the water for use by water treatment plants. It’s not known how much danger remains from heavy metals, such as lead, that are trapped in the river bed.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) – A Michigan state lawmaker who had an extramarital affair with another legislator says she is not resigning. A tearful Republican state representative Cindy Gamrat announced her decision Friday, a week after the scandal broke. She and fellow Republican representative Todd Courser are subjects of a House investigation into whether they misused public resources to hide their relationship and fired an aide who refused to help. Courser has said he orchestrated a false email claiming he had sex with a male prostitute, in order to deflect attention from the affair.
