BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Republican activists have picked a coal
company worker as North Dakota’s newest state senator.
Jessica Unruh (UHN’-roo) of Beulah will succeed Randy Christmann
in the Senate. Christmann resigned after he was elected to the
North Dakota Public Service Commission.
Unruh is an environmental specialist who works at the Freedom
coal mine. She was one of six candidates for the appointment. She
will serve the rest of Christmann’s term, which ends in December
2014.
North Dakota law allows party political activists to appoint a
legislator if an incumbent resigns shortly before the Legislature
meets.
The 28-year-old Unruh will represent District 33 in North
Dakota’s coal-mining region. It includes Mercer and Oliver counties
and part of western Morton County.
Unruh says she’s planning to run for election when her term
ends.
NORTHWOOD, N.D. (AP) – A defunct oilseed processing plant in
eastern North Dakota has been sold through an auction to an
undisclosed buyer.
Agweek reports that the former Northwood
Mills plant sold on Tuesday for $1.1 million. Only a handful of
people bid on the plant during the auction in a plant repair shop.
The buyer submitted a bid online.
The $10 million plant that once employed about two dozen people
opened in 2007 and closed two years later due in part to weak
demand for canola oil, and a bank foreclosed.
American Federal Bank senior credit officer Gary Hoots said the
bank was hoping for a higher selling price. He said he couldn’t
comment on the buyer’s plans.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota regulators are asking a judge
for permission to take control of the Falkirk Farmers Elevator Co.
Public Service Commission documents say Falkirk owes more than
$270,000 to at least seven people. Falkirk was based in Washburn
and operated grain elevators at Falkirk and Hazen.
The commission voted Wednesday to ask a judge to rule that the
elevator can’t pay its bills. If that happens, the commission will
sell off the company’s assets so its creditors can be paid.
The two elevators were closed in April, and they’ve already been
sold to other companies. But they still have pinto beans in
storage.
Falkirk’s cooperative members voted last summer to liquidate the
business and sell the company’s tractors, trucks and office
equipment.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Basin Electric Power Cooperative wants to
build a new electric power plant near Watford City in western North
Dakota.
The project includes two turbines that would be powered by
natural gas. They would be capable of generating up to 90 megawatts
of electricity.
North Dakota’s Public Service Commission said Wednesday it’s
received a notice from Basin that it wants to build the project.
The commission must approve the plans before construction starts.
Commission Chairman Brian Kalk says power providers have been
looking for ways to meet the rising demand for electricity in
western North Dakota’s oil country.
Basin wants to start building the plant in April 2014, and have
it running by January 2015.
It would be in McKenzie County, about 14 miles west of Watford
City.
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – Authorities are investigating the illegal
killing of at least two pronghorns in western North Dakota’s Morton
County.
The state Game and Fish Department says the animals that are
commonly called antelope were shot and left along a county road
northwest of Mandan. The agency says evidence at the scene
indicates more animals might also have been killed.
District Game Warden Jeff Violett says the shooting happened
earlier this month during the opening weekend of the deer gun
season. The Report All Poachers program is offering a $1,000 reward
for information leading to a conviction.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Some negotiations are in the works in
Washington. An administration official says two of President Barack
Obama’s top negotiators on the “fiscal cliff” will meet
separately Thursday with leading lawmakers. The sessions are seen
as an important step in determining how the government will avoid a
year-end package of tax increases and spending cuts that could
throw the economy into recession.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House says President Barack Obama is
looking forward to having a “useful discussion” with Mitt Romney
over lunch in the White House private dining room Thursday. Romney
also plans to meet with Congressman Paul Ryan, his running mate,
who’s back at work in the negotiations to avoid the “fiscal
cliff.”
WASHINGTON (AP) – Republican Sen. Bob Corker isn’t saying
whether he would oppose the expected nomination of Susan Rice to be
secretary of state — but he’s urging President Barack Obama to
carefully consider whether to nominate her. Corker is the latest
Republican senator to meet with Rice, the U.N. ambassador who’s the
target of Republican anger over her initial explanation for the
Benghazi consulate attack in Libya that killed four Americans.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Federal Reserve says economic growth got a
boost in recent weeks from a pickup in consumer spending and from
steady home sales — at least, in most parts of the country. The
one exception was in the Northeast, which was slowed by Superstorm
Sandy. The Fed says growth improved in three quarters of its
regional banking districts.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Powerball officials now believe there’s
a 75 percent chance that someone will hold a ticket for the winning
numbers that are drawn Wednesday night. The jackpot now stands at $550
million — or $360 million, before taxes, if taken in a lump sum.
