Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Nov 29, 2012) — Valley City State University’s Intercultural Communication and Group Dynamics classes, and What In The World Is Going On? (a civic organization in Valley City) have teamed up to offer educational and cultural experiences.

On Thursday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, spokesperson Angela Nording said that this Sunday, December 2, 2012, at 2pm at VCSU’s Froemke Auditorium of Foss Hall, Dr. Elden Lawrence, Author of “Peace Seekers” will be speaking.

Then the Circle of Nations School Singers and Dancers lead by Jason Kingbird will be performing. The Red Eagle Drums will lead a drum circle, offering an open invitation to come up and join in the drum circle.

Earlier this month as part of Rob Walsh’s Intercultural Communications Group, Dynamic classes, the Cultural Event Project, included film screenings of the documentary “Dakota 38.”

Walsh’s vision is to have a meaningful intercultural event every year, and commemorating the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 is part of the experience.

 From Wes Anderson…

Dr. Elden Lawrence, author of Stories and Reflections: From an Indian

Perspective and President Emeritus of Sisseton Wahpeton College,

will focus on his ancestral discovery, research efforts, and educational

pursuits. These awakenings began with a 9th grade government

boarding school experience and Bureau of Indian Affairs relocation—a

government assimilation program that almost devastated Native

American culture and had an enormous personal impact.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 2-month-old girl whose death was used by
critics as an example of endangered children on the Spirit Lake
Reservation died of natural causes.
U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon says  Debra Kay Andersen Dogskin’s July 7
death at her mother’s home in St. Michael was sudden infant death
syndrome. Purdon says the state medical examiner determined the
cause of death, and federal prosecutors decided against filing
charges.
Purdon says the investigation took almost five months because
officials wanted to be sure their review was thorough.
The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs assumed control of the
North Dakota tribe’s social service program in October after
criticism that the tribe has failed to protect vulnerable children.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – U.S. marshals in Fargo captured a woman who
tried to hide inside a large suitcase, but her hair became caught
in the zipper.

The 38-year-old woman was wanted for violating her
supervised release on a drug conviction. Authorities say the woman
had to be cut out of the suitcase Wednesday before she would be
arrested.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Someone has blown up a snowman in North
Dakota. Bismarck Police Sergeant Mark Buschena says that the
snowman was destroyed Wednesday in an explosion.

Buschena says the police report does not say whether the snowman was made up of snow or a holiday decoration.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Officials in Minot say nearly 80 percent of
the homes most heavily damaged by historic Souris River flooding in
2011 are repaired and either being lived in or are very close to
being habitable.
The flooding in the summer of 2011 caused main-floor damage to
more than 2,700 homes in the valley. City Assessor Kevin Ternes
(TUR’-nuhs) says only about 600 homes remain unlivable.
The flooding was caused by heavy spring snowmelt and rains. An
estimated 4,100 structures in Minot were damaged, from sheds to
businesses.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – This year’s Pride of Dakota Holiday
Showcase events are wrapping up, with the fourth and final show
being held at the Bismarck Civic Center.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says a record 263 vendor
booths will be featured Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, sampling
and selling North Dakota-made products.
More than 500 companies are members of the Agriculture
Department’s Pride of Dakota branding program. Holiday Showcases
were held earlier this month in Fargo, Grand Forks and Minot.

WASHBURN, N.D. (AP) – Construction is under way to nearly double
the size of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn.
The expansion will add 9,000 square feet to the existing
11,000-square-foot facility.
A new events center is planned, as well as more space for
displays and archives.
Spokeswoman Wendy Spencer says the cost of the project is pegged
at more than $5 million. She says the state has contributed about
$1.5 million, and the balance is being raised through donations.
Spencer says the work could be done sometime next year.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Home improvement retailer Menard Inc.
plans to fly Wisconsin workers in to staff its store in Minot.
Menard says jetting the employees in for weeklong stints and
housing them in hotels is likely to be a permanent solution for the
store’s staffing shortage. Minot is in the middle of an oil boom
and has more unfilled jobs than potential workers.

have played each other in football 99 times. This will be the first
time the two schools will meet in the playoffs.
The Jackrabbits travel to Fargo Saturday to play the Bison in
the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
The winner advances to the quarterfinals.
NDSU and SDSU have become both friends and foes since joining
forces for the move from Division II to Division I athletics a
decade ago.
Justin Sell, the SDSU athletic director, calls it one of the
“coolest rivalries” he’s been a part of because the schools have
many similarities, from athletic to academic programs.
The contest comes just three weeks after NDSU held off SDSU
20-17 in a game that ultimately decided the conference
championship.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Taylor Braun scored 26 points and nine

intercepted five times.

    NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

MIAMI (AP) – NBA Commissioner David Stern says the San Antonio

 MLB-HOT STOVE LEAGUE
Nationals get CF Span from Twins
UNDATED (AP) – The Washington Nationals have acquired outfielder
Denard (DEH’-nard) Span from the Minnesota Twins for minor league
pitcher Alex Meyer, giving the reigning NL East champions a leadoff
hitter and center fielder.

Span is a career .284 hitter with 23 home runs, 230 RBIs, 90 steals and a .357 on-base percentage during five seasons with the Twins.
The acquisition of Span allows the Nationals potentially to move
20-year-old Bryce Harper to left field, with Jayson Werth staying
in right. Michael Morse could then move to first base – the
position played by free agent slugger Adam LaRoche.

LaRoche is a free agent thought to be interested in a three-year deal. The Nats may only want to offer LaRoche two guaranteed years.

     In other Hot Stove news:
     – A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated
Press that Mariano Rivera and the New York Yankees have agreed to a
$10 million, one-year contract. The 43-year-old Rivera missed all
last year because of a knee injury, but has vowed a return.
–A person with knowledge of the deal says the Pittsburgh
Pirates have agreed to a $17 million, two-year contract with
free-agent catcher Russell Martin. The 29-year-old Martin hit .211
with 21 homers and 53 RBI in 133 games last season with the New
York Yankees.

NHL Labor…

NEW YORK (AP) – Today is the 76th day of the NHL labor lockout
and two days of negotiations with federal mediators have produced
no progress. Two members from the Federal Mediation and
Conciliation Service joined the discussions on the past two days
but couldn’t bring the sides any closer.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – The hard bargaining may still be ahead, as
President Barack Obama and congressional leaders look for ways to
avoid the “fiscal cliff” of tax hikes and spending cuts in
January. After talks yesterday on Capitol Hill involving Treasury
Secretary Tim Geithner (GYT’-nur), Republicans complained that the
Democrats weren’t offering specific ideas for spending reductions.
The White House, meanwhile, said a hike in tax rates for the
top-earning Americans is a must-have for any budget deal. President
Barack Obama takes his campaign for that plan to the Philadelphia
area today.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) – Prosecutors at the International
Criminal Court say they will look at what yesterday’s U.N. vote
will mean for Palestinian access to the world’s first permanent war
crimes tribunal. In April, prosecutors rejected a Palestinian bid
to get the court to investigate possible war crimes during an
Israeli military offensive in the Gaza strip that began in December
of 2008. But now, the U.N. General Assembly has voted to accept
“Palestine” as a non-member observer state.

GENEVA (AP) – The U.N. refugee agency says it found desperate
conditions in the Syrian city of Homs, where thousands of people
are living in unheated shelters and quarter of million people
displaced from their homes. An agency spokeswoman says an
assessment team visiting this week saw half the city’s hospitals
shut down. She says there were “severe shortages of basic
supplies” — including medicine, blankets and winter clothes.

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Republicans, with the help of some
Democrats, are expected today to approve a measure that would offer
permanent residency to foreign students who graduate with advanced
degrees in science and math from U.S. colleges and universities.
The bill isn’t likely to go anywhere in the Senate. But it sets the
stage for a bigger fight next year on how to redesign the nation’s
immigration system.

DEARBORN, Mo. (AP) – Lottery officials in Missouri are planning
to identify the winner of half of Wednesday night’s Powerball
jackpot at a news conference this morning. The person who bought
the ticket at a Missouri convenience store will split the jackpot
with a lucky ticket-holder in Arizona. Each would get about $192
million in a lump sum, before taxes.
