Jamestown (CSi) Celebrating St. John’s Academy’s 125th Anniversary, Bishop John Folda of the Diocese of Fargo will be in Jamestown today leading a playground blessing and say a Mass for the 255 students, 14 teachers, staff and parents.
The playground blessing starts at 10 a.m. The playground, which was installed over the summer, is possible with support from alumni and the parent teacher organization.
The bishop will visit classrooms and have lunch with students, followed by a 1 p.m. Mass to commemorate the anniversary in the school gymnasium.
The students include 47 preschool, 30 pre-kindergarten and 178 kindergarten through sixth grade. The students will wear matching maroon polo shirts with the traditional school coat of arms patch along with “125 years.”
St. John’s Academy closed its high school in 1965 and continues today as pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.
The Kid’s Kingdom day care tuition can cost between $1,050 and $1,400 per year; the pre-kindergarten morning or afternoon programs are $1,050 per child per year, and elementary enrollment is $2,919 for parish families and $3,539 for non-parishioners. Families Advocating Christian Education, an endowment, provided over $100,000 in scholarships to families in 2014.

Jamestown (CSi) Veterans needing a ride to the Fargo Veterans Administration for services, may use the Burleigh County Veterans Service van, that make stops in Jamestown.
On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County Veterans Service Officer, David Bratton said, the van is available three days per week. His office can make arrangements for riders, to and then back from the Fargo VA.
In other notes, he said the Sew-A-Thon is set for Saturday September 26, 2015, at Fabric 7 Textile at the Buffalo Mall from 10-a.m., to 2-p.m.
He added that the store provides the material to sew items that will be distributed to residents at the Veterans Home in Lisbon.
Just bring along sewing needles, and other supplies.
He also reminded veterans that the letter “V” can be printed on a veteran’s driver license to indicate his or her veterans status.
He pointed out that it can save an individual providing proof of their veterans status, by combining the IDs.
His office at the lower level of the LEC in Jamestown has the forms to fill out that can be taken to the DMV.
The Stutsman County Veterans Service Office is open M-F 8-a.m to noon and 1-p.m., with the exception of holidays.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown/Stutsman County United Way campaign kickoff is an outdoor movie event at Jack Brown Stadium, in cooperation with Jamestown Parks and Recreation, on Saturday September 19, 2015.
Cashwise has partnered with the United Way to put on a bratwurst and hotdog stand with all proceeds to the United Way.
The United Way is asking for a free will donation for the inflatables , fun activities and the outdoor movie. (Please leave pets at home.)
There will be inflatables courtesy of Jamestown Inflatables, and the family friendly movie starts at 8-p.m. Popcorn courtesy of Bison 6 Cinema, and Newman Signs will put up the screeen.
R&C School of Rock will provide music prior to the movie.
The Mosquito Squad will be spraying the park.
The United Way goal, for 2015-16 is $210,000, with the theme “United for Stutsman County.” The United Way currently funds 19 agencies.
Last year that goal was exceeded, raising $222,106.45.

Board members may serve two consecutive three year terms and required to sit out, so the United Way is always looking for new board members to bring new ideas and energy to the board.
Jamestown (CSi) The Stutsman County Commission will be giving local law enforcement a survey to help determine if they should implement, the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System (PERS.)
The system allows officers to make their own contributions so they may retire at an earlier date.
FOP Liaison Nellie Degen stated that the decision was made during this month’s Stutsman County Commissioners meeting.
She received a letter from Bowman County Sheriff Rory M. Teigen stating the benefits of PERS.
Teigen said, “My county has been with the PERS Law Enforcement since it was offered from the State. At the time, it would allow me to retire 2 years earlier than the normal PERS. Many counties have picked up the extra percentage, but here the deputies pickup their own.”

Fargo (CSi) U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp has announced that nearly $400,000 in federal funding to help construct a state park visitor information center at Fort Ransom State Park.
Heitkamp, says, “North Dakota is fortunate to have beautiful state parks that bring together families and neighbors. These funds will help the Fort Ransom State Park construct an informative visitor center that will boost North Dakota tourism and preserve the natural beauty of our most treasured landscapes and natural resources that shape the tradition of North Dakota.”
These funds are authorized by the National Park Service from the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
In February, she helped introduce bipartisan legislation to provide opportunities for and expand access to public lands for hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting activities in North Dakota and throughout the country. The Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act contains several legislative provisions important to North Dakota’s hunters and anglers which would:
- Make public lands public – Requires 1.5 percent of annual Land and Water Conservation Fund funding be made available to secure recreational public access to existing federal lands that have restricted access to hunting, fishing, and other recreational activities.
- Provide better access on public lands –This bill would require federal land management agencies to identify public lands without public access routes, and create a plan to provide access routes to lands that have significant potential for recreational use. The bill would also help counties and states better manage primary access routes on public lands.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say they’ve seized about $43,000 worth of drugs during an investigation in Minot.
Minot police say authorities found nearly 7 pounds of marijuana after searching a package held by a local courier. Police later served a search warrant on a Minot home and arrested 23-year-old Cameron Morris and 20-year-old Ashlee Morris.
Charges against Cameron Morris include possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance. Online court records say an initial court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday.
Police say Ashlee Morris is charged with possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
It was not immediately clear if the suspects have attorneys.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Two Georgia men have been charged in North Dakota in connection with a ring that cashed several counterfeit checks worth thousands of dollars.
Thirty-one-year-old Marlis Hill and 30-year-old Antonio Stephens have been charged with forgery or counterfeiting and other counts.
Court records state that Hill and Stephens convinced three Bismarck men to work for them and were promised a cut of the checks they were asked to cash.
Authorities allege the men cashed checks worth over $14,000.
North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers found 17 counterfeit checks in a vehicle after arresting Hill and Stephens Sunday. Records show Stephens told a trooper he and Hill participated in an Atlanta-based scam.
Hill’s attorney declined to comment on the case. Stephens’s attorney didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The Highway Patrol says a man operating a compacting machine in a construction zone on a Williams County road died in a mishap. Authorities say the 63-year-old man drove the vehicle too close to the edge of the roadway, and it slid into the ditch and rolled. The man died at the scene about 15 miles northwest of Williston, shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. He was not immediately identified.
HETTINGER, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a 56-year-old semi-truck driver was injured at an Adams County railroad crossing when his cab was struck by a train. The North Dakota Highway Patrol says David Pastoors of Olivia, Minnesota was driving the semi-truck north on a gravel township road just before 4 p.m. Tuesday when the vehicle was struck by a BNSF train.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (HYT’-kamp) says she will announce plans for her political future in the next “five (to) seven” days.
Rumors of a Heitkamp bid for governor were swirling months before North Dakota Gov. Jack Darlymple announced last week that he will not seek re-election.
Heitkamp says she is “working through” some details and understands that it’s important to reveal her plans as soon as possible. She adds that it’s unfair to North Dakota residents, the Democratic Party and her staff to “drag out” the issue.
The Democrat from North Dakota made an unsuccessful bid for the governor’s mansion in 2000. She is a former state tax commissioner and attorney general.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police in Minot are warning residents of a resurgence of calls from con artists posing as IRS officials.
Law enforcement authorities believe the scammers are located overseas, but the fraudulent calls show up on caller ID with an area code from western Washington state.
The Minot Police Department says two of the confirmed false phone numbers are 360-200-4671 and 360-283-5541.
Senior Officer Aaron Moss says people should be cautious if they receive a call from any of those numbers. He says the IRS never initiates any type of collections process over the phone. Instead, the agency first communicates with taxpayers through written correspondence.
The department is urging residents to contact police if they receive a fraudulent call.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Public Service Commission says grain storage licensed this year in North Dakota is up by more than 24 million bushels.
The PSC says the total licensed capacity this year is 451 million bushels. That’s up from 427 million bushels for the same time a year ago.
Officials say North Dakota has 381 licensed grain facilities and 76 roving grain buyers.
Officials credit strong harvest by farmers and increased capital investment by the grain industry for the increased capacity.
All grain storage in the state must be licensed, bonded and insured to protect farmers if a facility becomes insolvent or suffers a disaster. That includes temporary storage, such as when grain is piled on the ground due to a lack of bin space.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The city of Minot breaks ground today on a construction project to help protect the city’s water treatment plant and keep it functioning during a flood.
The Minot Water Treatment Plant is the only source of drinkable water for the city, Minot Air Force Base and many rural residents in the area. More than 100,000 people were put on a boil order when the plant was hit by Souris River flooding in 2011.
The city is using a $6 million grant from FEMA.
Minot Mayor Chuck Barney met with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials in Fargo on Wednesday. He says agency leaders seem to grasp the importance and specific issues related to Souris Basin flood control.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – City officials in Fargo are considering allowing earlier Sunday sales of alcohol in bars and restaurants.
The City Commission is expected to give final approval to a measure at its next meeting. The ordinance change would push back the allowed sale time to 11 a.m. from noon on Sundays, mirroring a measure passed earlier this year by North Dakota’s Legislature.
The change would not affect liquor stores, which would still have a noon opening time on Sundays.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota wildlife officials say more than 100 licenses remain for this year’s swan hunt.
The state Game and Fish Department held its lottery for the swan season, which runs from Oct. 3 to Jan. 3. All remaining licenses will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis beginning on Wednesday. Regulations limit hunters to one license per year.
The license fee is $10 for residents at $30 for nonresidents. Hunters may apply on the department’s website at www.gf.nd.gov .
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota is joining its in-state Division I counterparts in providing stipends to all of its scholarship athletes.
UND announced Wednesday it would pay players in all sports for the full cost of attending college, beginning with the 2016-17 season. The school is already funding those miscellaneous expenses for men’s and women’s hockey.
North Dakota State announced last week it would provide stipends for athletes in all of its sports in 2016-17.
UND athletic director Brian Faison says the move allows his coaches to compete against regional schools for recruits.
Some mid-major schools have said they would offer stipends in some sports, but NDSU, UND and Liberty University are the only ones to announce that they will be giving cost of attendance scholarships in all sports.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Tommy Milone struck out seven in seven innings and Miguel Sano hit another monster home run to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Milone (7-4) gave up three hits and finished seven innings for the first time since July 8. Trevor Plouffe added two hits and two RBIs and Kevin Jepsen picked up his 10th save for the Twins, who started the day one game behind Texas for the second AL wild card.

NEW YORK (AP)- Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich), the top seed at the U.S. Open, took some time to get going last night at the U.S. Open, splitting the opening eight games. Then he reeled off 14 of the remaining 17 in a 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory over 52nd-ranked Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria to reach the third round.
Top seed Serena Williams is into the third round of the U.S. Open but it was hardly a masterpiece.
The defending champ bested Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 7-6, 6-3, overcoming 10 double faults and two dozen other unforced errors. Afterward, she said she was a “little tight” about the match.
Williams is looking to become the first player since Steffi Graf (grahf) in 1988 to win all four majors in one year.
Sister Venus Williams moved closer to the tournament’s second week by beating Irina Falconi 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 in an all-American second-round matchup.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A witness summoned to appear before a House committee on Benghazi next week is planning to assert his Fifth Amendment right not to testify. Attorneys for Brian Pagliano have sent the committee a letter notifying them of the decision. The former State Department employee helped Hillary Rodham Clinton set up her private email server. The panel’s top Democrat, Congressman Elijah Cummings says it’s no surprise given what he calls the “wild and unsubstantiated accusations” against Clinton.
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) – Hungary’s leader is denouncing Germany and EU leaders for not doing enough to deal with Europe’s migrant crisis. In Hungary, migrants by the hundreds dashed into Budapest’s main train station after police stopped blocking its entrance. The migrants piled into trains despite announcements that there is no service to Western Europe.
UNDATED (AP) – World stocks are higher today as a holiday in China gives investors a break from its volatile markets. Attention is turning to the European Central Bank, which meets today to discuss its monetary policy. With oil prices at multiyear lows, the ECB is expected to reduce inflation forecasts. Benchmark indexes in Britain, France and Germany have added more than one percent.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – An Associated Press survey of nearly a dozen big cities finds that when it comes to emergency planning for crude oil trains, the results have been spotty at best. Crude has become one of the nation’s most common hazardous materials transported by rail. Cities are scrambling to formulate emergency plans and to train firefighters.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Missing: an 8-foot-long king cobra snake that escaped from a home in Orlando, Florida. Wildlife officials say the snake was reported missing yesterday by its owner, who has the proper permit to keep it as a pet. The owner is described as an experienced snake handler.
