BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The northern lights have been making a splash in the Dakotas this week.
The North Dakota Department of Commerce’s tourism Twitter account has been busy retweeting residents’ brightly colored photographs of the aurora borealis from across the state. Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based KELO-TV even caught a shot of the aurora on its Chamberlain sky-camera.
Patrick Ayd of the National Weather Service’s Bismarck office tells KXMB-TV that the weather phenomena is not done showing off, and he expects the trend will continue for the next couple months.
Jamestown (CSi) The new Jamestown, ND Menards Mega Store located at 1209 23rd Street SW (Behind the Buffalo Mall on 23 rd St SW) is open for business.
Jeff Abbott, Menards Spokesperson says, “We appreciate all the hard work and dedication from everyone involved in building this beautiful new store in Jamestown.”

New Rockford (CSi) 51 year-old David Troske of New Rockford has been charged, after killing a man and injuring a woman at a wedding reception this past weekend.
Troske has been charged with Murder, Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangerment and bringing a gun into a bar after allegedly shooting and killing 41 year-old Donnie Perleberg of Pingree. The complaint says Perleberg was shot in the head and neck. Troske’s ex-girlfriend, Mary Seiler, was shot in the neck and torso. She remains Tuesday in a medically-induced coma in Bismarck and is expected to recover.
A 22-Caliber revolver owned by Troske was recovered at the scene.
Troske is being held on $2 million bail.
Troske remains in custody at the Ramsey County Jail in Devils Lake.
Troske could make his first appearances on September 10, 2015 in Eddy County.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Council met in Regular Session Tuesday evening at City Hall. Council Member Brubakken was not present.
CONSENT AGENDA ITEMS DISCUSSED SEPARATELY:
Council Member Buchanan asked that item “R” be removed, Resolution to approve Payment No. 6 (Inv 08387.01-6), to SRF Consulting Group, Inc., for
Jamestown Planning and Zoning Technical Services, Amendment No. 2, in the amount of
$12,615.66. He has concerns about the running budget vs. the total dollars that were allocated.
Mayor Andersen said the total budget this year was $56,000, to $57,000 adding that the City Planning Commission needs to be apprised of the fees, that area being requested and approved for payment. There remains $10,000 left in the budgeted amount.
Mayor Andersen said the city may have to budget an additional amount if funds run out.
The Council then voted to approve the payment.

Council Member Buchanan asked about the progress of the storm and sewer repair progress, and the topic will be brought to a future committee meeting.
Council Member Kourajian asked that the topic of allowing ATV and UTV on city streets be revisited, at an upcoming committee meeting.

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown’s Mayor Katie Andersen has proclaimed September 29, 2015 as a ‘Day Without Violence’ for the community of Jamestown.
According to the proclamation, the city of Jamestown doesn’t have a day to commemorate and encourage non-violence whereas other cities have already established days and weeks for non-violence. ‘Day Without Violence’ is established to have each state proclaim a statewide day without violence on or around September 30th and a Nationwide day on October 1st.
Jamestown (CSi) Orphan Grain Train, North Dakota Branch, has moved into the old C.H. Carpenter Lumber Building.
The Jamestown Downtown Association’s newsletter states, that Orphan Grain Train is a Christian Volunteer network that ships donated food, clothing, medical and other needed items to people in over 64 different countries including the U.S.A. Nearly 3.5 million meals were shipped in 2014 and of every dollar spent, 97% goes for helping needy people and 3% to administration and fund raising.

Valley City (CSi) The Abused Persons Outreach Center APOC will hold the Annual Fall Fundraiser and Silent Auction on Friday, September 11, 2015, at the Valley City VFW Club.
Roast beef or chicken breast dinner along with ice cream from MidWest Dairy Association will be served from 4:30-p.m. to 7:30-p.m. A Silent Auction will be held from 4:30 to 6:30-p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults, $5 children, and are available by calling APOC at 701-845-0078 or at the door the night of the event.
APOC has been providing crisis intervention, emergency shelter, advocacy, and counseling to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault since 1985. The center relies heavily on local donations to provide services to victims as they work to build a life free from fear and violence.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The Grand Forks police bomb squad analyzed a suspicious backpack but determined it was not dangerous.
A resident reported to police that a backpack marked with the words “Danger, Stay Back” was lying on the ground of a parking lot just before 11 p.m. Tuesday. Police cordoned off the area and bomb squad members responded.
Police say nothing dangerous or suspicious was inside. It is not known if the pack was left as a hoax or if it was lost.
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Some passengers headed from Bismarck to Las Vegas had an unexpected stop. An Allegiant Air flight diverted to an airport in southern Utah for what the airline described as a possible maintenance issue. No emergency was declared, and passengers were flown by a different plane the final 120 miles to Las Vegas.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A 61-year-old North Dakota woman who operates a day care has been charged with felony child abuse or neglect.
Catherine Piatz, of Bismarck, was charged after a couple became suspicious when they picked up their child from day care for a second time with a face injury.
Piatz told police that four children younger than 6 years old were under her watch. Piatz told authorities that the most recent injury was caused by a toy the child was carrying.
Court records show a doctor deemed the injury non-accidental.
The station reports that another child who attended the day care told a children’s advocate that Piatz was “mean” to the children, slapped them, pull their ears and pinch them.
Records do not list an attorney for Piatz.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A rare status hearing is set to resume on a man’s appeal of a conviction in the November 2003 kidnapping and killing of University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin (shuh-DEEN’). An attorney for Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. has already spent several hours questioning a juror about alleged misconduct, including whether she withheld information on a questionnaire because shew as eager to be part of the proceedings.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A professor at the University of North Dakota has been arrested on campus on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The University of North Dakota Police Department says driver Frank Cuozzo was pulled over on campus Tuesday morning for an expired registration on a car. The UND police officer then detected the odor of alcohol and arrested Cuozzo after conducting a field sobriety test.
The police department says Cuozzo was also arrested for driving under revocation. He was booked into the Grand Forks County Correctional Center.
Court records show Cuozzo pleaded guilty in 2011 to one count of reckless driving and was sentenced to one year of probation.
Cuozzo is part of UND’s anthropology department. It is unclear whether he has legal representation.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -More than 16,600 North Dakotans have signed up and paid for health insurance under President Barack Obama’s health care law, and most are getting tax subsidies that average $231 a month. That’s according to figures released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. More than 14,000 people are receiving the subsidies
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A state regulator says cleanup of a massive 2013 oil spill in northwestern North Dakota is being slowed due to the lack of natural gas needed to power equipment at the site.
State environmental scientist Bill Suess says workers will be at the site near Tioga at least another two years baking oil from the soil using a process called thermal desorption.
Suess says workers are trying to bring a second thermal desorption machine online but there is not enough natural gas available commercially in the area to power the unit. Suess called it “an irony” due to the amount of natural gas in the region that is being flared.
The spill was discovered by a Tioga farmer in September 2013 and has been called the worst in state history.

Expect there to be about 3,500-4,000 people in town…in addition, September 19th is also the North Dakota Winter Show Jr. High/High School Rodeos, which will bring even more visitors to Valley City.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Former St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros pitcher Joaquin Andujar (WAH’-keen AN’-doo-hahr) has died at 62 of complications from diabetes. Andujar was a two-time All-Star in five seasons with the Cardinals, helping the team win the 1982 World Series and 1985 National League pennant. He had 20-win seasons in 1984 and ’85, led the National League in victories in ’84 and was a 15-game winner on the Cardinals ’82 World Series club.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) – Former Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel (KAS’-uhl) is back with the Buffalo Bills. Just days after being cut by the team, he has agreed to a new, cheaper contract and has been named the backup to Tyrod Taylor.
Cassel was scheduled to make a $4.15 million base salary in his previous contract, which was deemed too expensive for a backup.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa state medical examiner says former New York Giants safety Tyler Sash has died at the age of 27. The director of forensic operations for the medical examiner tells The Associated Press that his office and local police are investigating Sash’s death.
No cause of death has been determined, but an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) – A Hungarian camerawoman has been tripped up by the very medium in which she works. The N1TV Internet channel says its employee, widely identified in Hungarian media as Petra Laszlo, has been fired after she was caught on video kicking and tripping migrants entering Hungary across the border with Serbia. Laszlo can be seen kicking at least one migrant and tripping a man carrying a small child.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Police in Missouri say they’re investigating a triple shooting in Kansas City. They say a family member returned home and discovered the bodies of a man, a woman and an infant. Police do not have a description of a suspect.
BALTIMORE (AP) – A judge in Baltimore is nearing a decision on whether to move the trial of six officers charged in Freddie Gray’s death out of the city, and the city’s $6.4 million settlement with the family could end up being a factor. The settlement is expected to be approved today and the judge’s decision on a change of venue is expected tomorrow. Defense attorneys requested a change of venue, citing pre-trial publicity.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Iran nuclear deal appears poised for eventual adoption despite opposition from congressional Republicans and on the presidential campaign trail. But the effort to kill the deal continues today as Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz team up with other conservatives, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, for a rally on the lawn of the Capitol. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton plans a speech to support the deal.
