Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Parkboard has given themselves a raise, approved on a 3-2, with members Larry Knoblich and Mark Ukestad opposed. The raise increasing parkboard members monthly salary from $100 to $125 and Chairman Mike Landscoot’s salary from $150 to $175 a month.

The salary change takes effect on January 1, 2016.

Landscoot said he thought bringing the commissioners’ salaries up by $25 a month brought the Jamestown Parks and Recreation Commission more in line with parks and recreation commissions from similar-sized communities.

Knoblich said he was concerned about how the public will view the salary increases.

Ukestad said he thought the salaries should have remained as they were.

Doug Hogan, Parks and Recreation Department director, adds that the commissioners also receive free use of the all Parks and Recreation facilities. When the Two Rivers Activity Center is built, commissioners will also get free use of that facility for as long as they serve on the commission.

Also at Monday’s meeting, Landscoot and Vice Chairman Ron Olson said the commission will be holding more special meetings related to approvals needed for TRAC.

Hogan said he had received a letter from a disability rights advocacy group that most of Jamestown Parks and Recreation bathrooms were not accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Hogan said contractor David Hillerud looked at each bathroom in all of the Parks and Recreation facilities. Hillerud’s estimate was $30,000 to $40,000 to make changes at seven bathroom facilities. Hogan said he would research into what grants are available to cover an expense like this.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Trial has been pushed back for an Oregon man accused of supplying a powerful synthetic drug that led to several drug overdoses in North Dakota.

Proceedings for Brandon Hubbard, of Portland, Oregon, were scheduled to begin Tuesday. Hubbard has pleaded not guilty in federal court to several charges, including conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in serious bodily injury and death.

Defense attorney Jeff Bredahl asked for the delay because the case is complicated and the evidence in the case is being gathered from throughout the United States and Canada. Prosecutors did not object to the motion.

Authorities say several people have gotten sick from ingesting powdered fentanyl. Hubbard and three Grand Forks residents are accused of distributing drugs that resulted in two overdose deaths.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The FBI says a flight attendant fabricated a story about a suspicious package on a Delta Airlines flight that led to an emergency landing at a North Dakota airport last week.

The allegations are included in documents unsealed Monday in U.S. District Court in Bismarck. A complaint charges Justin Cox-Sever with interfering with the operation of an aircraft and communicating false information.

The Dickinson airport was temporarily shut down Wednesday when the aircraft traveling from Minneapolis landed.

An FBI affidavit says Cox-Sever admitted to stuffing a bag with towels and later reporting it as a suspicious package making beeping noises.

Cox-Sever’s attorney didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment. Cox-Sever is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

SkyWest Airlines, which operated the flight for Delta, on Thursday said Cox-Sever was placed on administrative leave pending a police investigation.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The Minot Police Department says an officer shot a man during a fight that began after the man tried to flee from law enforcement.

The department says the man was shot around 9:40 p.m. Sunday, when the officer responded to a report of a suspicious person.

The department says the officer asked the man to identify himself, but instead he began to flee. The officer caught the man and a fight ensued, leading the officer to discharge the weapon during the struggle.

The man remains at a local hospital. His condition is unknown.

The officer was placed on administrative leave, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation is probing the incident. These are standard procedures when an officer is involved in a shooting.

Police didn’t immediately identify the man and officer.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Authorities in North Dakota say a stolen pickup truck and numerous items worth about $40,000 have been recovered in Minot.

The Ward County Sheriff’s Department on Monday said the items were recovered when a search warrant was executed at a Minot apartment and garage Friday.

Authorities say deputies found a 2012 Chevrolet pickup that had been reported stolen a few days before the search. The department says power tools, a handgun and other times that were stolen during several burglaries in Ward County were also recovered.

The 22-year-old Joshua Evanoff, of Minot, was arrested when the search warrant was served. He faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property and burglary.

Court records associated with the case do not list an attorney for Evanoff.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota officials are inching toward completing a review of the Red River diversion project.

The Department of Natural Resources released a draft Monday of its environmental impact study of the $2 billion flood control project. Commissioner Tom Landwehr says a top concern is the high water that would build up behind a dam across the Red River.

That dam is a critical piece of the proposed flood control channel around the Fargo metropolitan area that project opponents say will unfairly affect upstream communities.

Minnesota’s review is a linchpin for construction on the massive project. A federal judge halted construction on a ring levee around upstream towns in the staging area until the review is complete.

The state aims to finish sometime in 2016 after collecting public input.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota drillers are still producing oil at a near-record pace despite depressed crude prices.

The Department of Mineral Resources says the state produced an average of 1.2 million barrels of oil daily in July, down slightly from June. The July production was 27,000 barrels per day less than the record set in December.

North Dakota also produced a record 1.65 million cubic feet of natural gas in June.

The July tally is the latest figure available because oil production numbers typically lag at least two months.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A committee searching for Fargo’s next chief of police has narrowed the list of candidates to four.

The list includes two internal candidates and two who work outside North Dakota.

The seven-member search committee has selected Fargo Police Department Interim Chief David Todd and Lt. Joel Vettel, who is responsible for criminal investigations. The committee also selected Luis Soler, chief of the Crowley Police Department in Texas, and George Austin, captain at the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department in North Carolina.

The city officials, police officers and Fargo resident who make up the search committee will interview the candidates on Oct. 8 and 9.

Former Fargo Police Chief Keith Ternes stepped down in November amid an investigation into alleged morale and disciplinary problems in the department.

The North Dakota Republican says he and Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico are introducing legislation to designate the American bison as the country’s national mammal. The proposed National Bison Legacy Act also recognizes the historical, cultural and economic significance of the animal.

Hoeven says the bison “is one of the most powerful and inspiring symbols of America.”

Members of the U.S. House including South Dakota Republican Rep. Kristi Noem introduced a similar measure in that chamber earlier this year.

Valley City (CSi) Valley City High School will have to forfeit one football game win after an ineligible football player played in the Lisbon vs Valley City game on Friday, September 4, 2015.

Activities Director Marty Bratrud said, “A letter of self report was sent to both the North Dakota High School Activities Association and Lisbon School District and now Valley City will have to forfeit the game.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A former mayor of Bismarck has registered trade names for three of the five options for a new nickname for the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

Marlan Haakenson (HAWK’-uhn-suhn) says he hopes to interfere with the nickname selection process, because he believes “North Dakota” should also be an option.

UND President Robert Kelley said last month that “North Dakota” would not be included in the vote because it’s an identity, not a nickname. The five nickname options that will be voted on next month are Roughriders, North Stars, Fighting Hawks, Nodaks and Sundogs.

UND spokesman Peter Johnson says Haakenson’s move shouldn’t prevent the nickname selection process from moving forward.

UND’s former nickname, “Fighting Sioux,” was deemed offensive by the NCAA and was dropped three years ago.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Carlos Hyde ran for a 10-yard score late in the first half by spinning away from a defender and diving into the end zone untouched on a rare nice play in a game full of ugly ones, and added another 17-yard TD run as the San Francisco 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings 20-3 on Monday night to win coach Jim Tomsula’s debut.

Adrian Peterson carried 10 times for 31 yards playing his first game in more than a year following paid leave and then a suspension last year in the fallout from a child-abuse case against him in Texas.

Colin Kaepernick threw for 165 yards and Hyde wound up with 168 yards on 26 rushes in his first career start.

A sloppy first half featured a pair of botched field goals, Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater running into his own teammate for a 10-yard sack, an 85-yard punt return touchdown called back on penalty, and a fumbled punt – by the former Australian rugby league star Jarryd Hayne on his first NFL touch.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A dominant first half by the Atlanta Falcons allowed them to overcome a shaky second half against the Eagles on Monday.

Julio Jones had nine receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns as the Falcons held off the Eagles 26-24. Jones reached the end zone twice in the second quarter, including a 22-yard grab that put the Falcons ahead 20-3 with 45 seconds left in the first half.

Matt Ryan shook off a pair of interceptions to throw for 298 yards on 23 of 34 passing.

The Eagles managed just 125 yards in the first half, eight coming on the ground. DeMarco Murray scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns but finished with just nine yards on eight carries in his Eagles debut.

Philadelphia had a chance to go ahead until Cody Parkey missed a 44-yard field goal with 2:27 to go and Ricardo Allen picked off a deflected pass with 1:11 left.

TIMBERWOLVES…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Timberwolves have hired former Detroit Pistons physical therapist Arnie Kander to head their revamped athletic training staff. Kander spent 23 seasons with the Pistons and carved out a reputation as one of the most-respected physical therapists in the league. He got to know Timberwolves president and coach Flip Saunders during Saunders’ coaching tenure in Detroit.

WILD…

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota Wild fans will see new security measures when they attend home games this season. Walk-through metal detectors have been added to all entrances. The Wild say the detectors will give fans “a smoother, faster screening environment.” All fans, media, vendors and staff will be required to pass through the detectors when they enter Wild games.

NFL…

UNDATED (AP) – Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh (ehn-DAHM’-uh-kehn soo) has been fined over $420,000 for on-field misbehavior during his five-plus NFL seasons, but he will go unpunished for his actions in yesterday’s 17-10 win at Washington.

The league says it will not take action against Suh after he dislodged an opponent’s helmet. The NFL says the contact by Suh following a play was determined not to be a kick.

Suh tackled Washington running back Alfred Morris, and when Suh rose, his right leg made contact with Morris’ helmet, which came off.

Forbes Magazine has come out with its annual ranking of sports teams and their value. At the top are the Dallas Cowboys, worth an estimated $4 billion. The Cowboys top the list of NFL teams for the ninth consecutive year and are first among all sports teams for the first time since 2007. At the bottom of the list are the Buffalo Bills with a reported value of “just” $1.4 billion.

In addition to the extensions for Johnson and Lowe’s, crew chief Chad Knaus had previously inked a new three-year deal through the 2018 season. The extensions solidify a powerhouse team that has been together since Lowe’s came aboard in 2001, when Hendrick formed the No. 48 specifically for Johnson.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. (AP) – A massive firefighting effort still hasn’t made much of a dent in a drought-fueled wildfire that sped through Middletown and other parts of rural Lake County, less than 100 miles north of San Francisco. The fire killed one person as it consumed more than 95 square miles, injured four firefighters and sent hundreds of people to evacuation centers.
