Valley City (CSi) Two Valley City people have been sentenced, stemming from a March 1st incident in Valley City.

Andrew Michael Adams and Jennifer Ann Marie Schultz of Valley City were sentenced on a Class B Felony Robbery charge.

Judge Jerod Tufte sentenced Schultz to one year in prison all suspended except for 60 days and supervised probation for 18 months after she is released. Schultz was also ordered to pay $560 in legal fees and $56 in restitution to the victim.

Adams was sentenced to one year in the Barnes County jail all suspended except 120 days and supervised probation for one year upon his release. Adams was ordered to pay $775 in legal fees.

Barnes County State Attorney Carl Martineck says the victim informed police that two people robbed him in the Elks parking lot on March 1st and left the scene in a car.

Police said another man chased after and rear-ended the robbery suspect’s vehicle multiple times with his vehicle to stop the suspect’s car.

 

Valley City (CSi) October 2015 is Energy Efficiency Month.

During the month, Valley City Public Works will be hanging an LED light bulb on each customers door.

Included will be information on Energy Efficient Lighting.

 

Valley City (CSi) The Barnes County Commission will hold a public hearing on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 6-p.m., in the county commission chamber on the second floor of the courthouse.

The public is invited to comment on the 2016 preliminary budget.

Barnes County taxpayer’s may appear and discuss any item of expenditure or enter objections to any item in the preliminary budget.

 

Jamestown (CSi) A ballot issue expected in June of 2016 will be if the Stutsman County state’s attorney position should be elected or appointed.

The Stutsman County Commission has unanimously approved placing the question about the position on the ballot.

The action came after the commission discussed a request from Stutsman County State’s Attorney Fritz Fremgen to add another full-time attorney position to his office.

Stutsman County CEO Casey Bradley says if the public votes to change the position to an appointed position, the County Commission would have more options for addressing issues with the county state’s attorney office.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The new Jamestown Menards store is holding a nine-day grand opening celebration to mark the opening.

The grand opening runs through September 27, 2015, and offers daily prize drawings, product demonstrations, celebrity appearances and specials. The new Jamestown store is located at 1209 23rd St. SW (behind the Buffalo Mall on 23rd Street Southwest).

Grand opening hours are 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

 

Jamestown (CSi) Famous Footwear has announced that their new store location in Jamestown, near Applebee’s is now open.

Spokesperson Rebekah Epstein, the store opened on Wednesday September 16, 2015, at 809 26th Street Southwest.

The 5000-square-foot store will be holding a grand opening on November 7th and will be giving away a pair of shoes to the first 100 guests.

Famous Footwear President, Rick Ausick says “Our decision to open a new store in Jamestown was based on a recognized consumer need, and we look forward to delivering a great footwear shopping destination.” s

Famous Footwear has more than 1,200 stores nationwide.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The John Deere dealership in Jamestown Valley Plains Equipment has started Phase One of moving a building to the east side, to make way for a new facility, that began Monday morning.

     

Hugh Hillstrom,  the structure is being moved 200 feet to the east…used for storage, it will become a cold facility storage unit that will house tires, concaves, customer equipment and other goods.  Trevor Williamson, lot manager of Valley Plains Equipment, points out that the move will increase the height of the original building 4 feet to create a higher sidewall for machines parked in the shop.

The new facility, will be 68,000 square feet, will have more retail-type products with a better layout, but won’t be increasing the type of products available.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Prosecutors have filed new charges against a Montana woman who once was accused of exploiting her mentally impaired 85-year-old uncle in North Dakota and helping kidnap him.
 
     Sixty-eight-year-old Sandra Potter, of Worden, Montana, faces four counts of exploiting a vulnerable adult. An arrest warrant was issued for her late last week.
 
     Sandra Potter and Thomas Potter, nephew of Robert Gross, were accused a year ago of keeping Gross in deplorable living conditions and getting him to sign over oil well rights. Authorities later dropped the charges for lack of evidence, but they continued to investigate.
 
     Sandra Potter could face up to 41 years in prison if convicted on the new charges. The Associated Press requested comment from the attorney who represented her on the initial charges.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A convenience store in Fargo has been robbed for a third time in the past year.
 
     Authorities say a man walked into the Casey’s General Store about 11:45 p.m. Sunday, demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
 
     A police dag tracked the man but eventually lost the trail.
 
     The man did not display a weapon. 

 

  MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Formal charges are pending against a Minot man who allegedly got drunk, left his vehicle running on a city street in the early morning hours and endangered a child.
 
     Police say officers responded to the report of the unoccupied vehicle shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. They found the 34-year-old man who allegedly had been driving the vehicle walking in the area.
 
     Authorities say the man had a 5-month old girl with him who was not properly dressed for the weather.
 
     The man was arrested on drunken driving and child neglect charges. The child was taken to a family friend.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Sentencing is set in federal court for a man accused of dealing methamphetamine in North Dakota and Minnesota.
 
     Brian Noyes is charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance. He pleaded guilty in June.
 
     Authorities say the 39-year-old Noyes was part of a ring that began in January 2013.
 
     The charge carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and a minimum mandatory term of five years.
 
     Sentencing Is scheduled Monday morning in Fargo.

 

 DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – A junior at Devils Lake High School has made it her mission to lift the spirits of her peers following the death of a classmate just days before the 2014-2015 school year began.
 
Desi Frith was affected by a recent classmate’s suicide. She didn’t know the student well, but says she wished she could have helped.
 
     In response, Frith is writing and posting weekly hundreds of heartfelt messages to fellow students on lockers, walls and anywhere someone might see them.
 
     Frith says she wants to remind her classmates that they’re loved and supported. She also wants them to know that someone is in their corner if they need help.

 

  WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Construction of a $5.3 million fire department substation is under way in Williston. 
 
City officials and firefighters broke ground on the site last week.
 
     The department in the oil patch city now covers an area the size of Bismarck, which is North Dakota’s second-largest city. Bismarck has five fire stations. Williston has one.
 
     Officials say firefighters responded to twice as many calls in 2014 as they did in 2013.

 

 WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Williston more than tripled its number of hotel rooms over the last five years, and now the city’s Convention and Visitors Bureau is working to keep them full.
 
Williston had six hotels before January 2010. Now, the city is home to 23 hotel properties, and on average, about 55 percent of their 2,100 rooms are occupied. That figure doesn’t include the 500 rooms available just outside city limits.
 
     Bureau director Amy Krueger says hotels have lower occupancy during the weekend and winter months, but the limited amount of meeting space available in the city makes it difficult to attract conventions whose attendees would fill those rooms. 
 
     Krueger says even a small convention center would allow Williston to be competitive as a site for state and regional conventions.

 

 BOWBELLS, N.D. (AP) – The city of Bowbells in northwestern North Dakota is looking for public and private donations to buy a new ambulance.
 
     The  city’s existing ambulance is 16 years old. A new one costs between $200,000 and $250,000.
 
     Dan Folske is president of the Bowbells Ambulance Association. He says the group will be applying for grants, but needs all the help it can get.
 
     Folske says he hopes the funding campaign will also draw attention to how challenging it is for the city to find people to staff the fire house and drive the ambulance.

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Adrian Peterson had 192 total yards as the Minnesota Vikings rebounded from a rough season opener for a 26-16 victory Sunday over the Detroit Lions. Teddy Bridgewater played a smart, sharp game for Minnesota after looking lost in defeat at San Francisco. Matthew Stafford was erratic for Detroit.
 

 GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Aaron Rodgers threw for two touchdowns as the Green Bay Packers outlasted the Seattle Seahawks for a 27-17 win Sunday night. Rodgers orchestrated a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive. The Packers blew a 16-0 lead against the Seahawks in the playoffs last year. They held on after giving up 13-3 lead at halftime on Sunday.

 Carson Palmer had four touchdown tosses to lead the Arizona Cardinals to a 48-23 victory over the Chicago Bears. Palmer connected with Larry Fitzgerald for three TDs, and David Johnson returned the opening kickoff a club-record 108 yards and added a rushing TD. The loss was costly for Chicago as quarterback Jay Cutler left with an injured hamstring late in the first half.
 

It was another costly victory for the Dallas Cowboys.
 
     Tony Romo suffered a broken left collarbone in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 20-10 triumph at Philadelphia. The injury occurred on a sack, leading Romo to suffer his second fractured collarbone in six seasons.
 
     The Cowboys say Romo will be re-evaluated on Monday and joins wide receiver Dez Bryant on the Dallas sideline.

 LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) – Candace Parker scored 25 points to lead the Sparks to an 81-71 win against the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals Sunday. Parker scored 15 points in the second quarter on 5-for-7 shooting. Ana Dabovic added a career-high 18 points for the Sparks.

     UNDATED (AP) – Ohio State and Michigan State of the Big-Ten hold down the top two spots in the new Associated Press Top-25 poll.
 
     The Buckeyes picked up 40 of 61 first-place votes after surviving a tough game against Northern Illinois. Michigan State got seven and third-ranked Mississippi 11.
 
     Ole Miss actually shares the No. 3 spot with TCU, just ahead of Baylor. Notre Dame is sixth, followed by LSU, Georgia, UCLA and Florida State. LSU’s Tiger received one first-place vote.

     JOLIET, Ill. (AP) – Denny Hamlin has earned a surprise automatic berth into the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs.
 
     Hamlin rallied from last to victory lane at Chicagoland Speedway in the opening race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
 
     Hamlin is in coast mode for the next two races because his victory moves him into the second round. Only 12 drivers will advance into the next round, and a victory in any Chase race earns an automatic berth.
 
     Carl Edwards rallied from a speeding penalty to finish second and give JGR and Toyota a 1-2 finish.
 
     Third-place finisher Kurt Busch was headed for the win until the final caution was called with 10 laps remaining.
 
     Kevin Harvick crashed after making contact with Jimmie Johnson on a restart. Johnson went to Harvick’s motorhome to speak to Harvick, but Harvick walked out of the bus and shoved Johnson in the chest with a closed fist.
 
 
     SINGAPORE (AP) – Sebastian Vettel drove his Ferrari to victory in the Singapore Grand Prix. Vettel’s third win of the season is the 42nd of his career, third all-time in Formula One. Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo (rih-KAR’-doh) was second behind his former teammate.
 
     Reigning world champ and current leader in the driver standings Lewis Hamilton failed to finish the race, leaving him 41 points ahead of Mercedes teammate Nico (NEE’-koh) Rosberg.

     LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – Jason Day is enjoying a tremendous finish to the 2015 season. The winner of the PGA Championship has won his second FedEx Cup playoff tourney with a six-stroke win over Daniel Berger in the BMW Championship. Day finished 22-under-par.
 
     Rickie Fowler completed play at 14-under along with Rory McIlroy. Bubba Watson was 12-under and Jordan Spieth (speeth) was 11-under.
 
     The final FedEx playoff tournament is next week in Atlanta.
 
 
     ST. LEON-ROT, Germany (AP) – After being infuriated by a call they found unsportsmanlike, the Americans staged the biggest comeback in Solheim Cup history to win the trophy back from Europe. Paula Creamer (KREE’-mur) defeated Germany’s Sandra Gal to complete the turnaround and secure a 14 1/2-13 1/2 victory for the United States, which had trailed by four points going into the singles.

HAVANA (AP) – Pope Francis will finish his Cuba visit in the eastern part of the country today with Mass and a visit to a shrine before flying on to Washington to begin his United States visit. He met yesterday with President Raul Castro and his brother, Fidel, but not with Cuban dissidents. Francis did take a subtle jab at the communist system yesterday in his homily during Mass in Havana. He said service to others is the path to greatness and that it’s “never ideological.”
 
     TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – The chief of the U.N. nuclear agency says that while it agreed to have Iranian experts take samples for signs Tehran worked on nuclear weapons, the probe still meets strict agency standards. Such sampling is usually done by U.N. experts. Yukiya Amano says that Iranians took samples at their Parchin military site, where the agency suspects that explosive triggers might have been tested.
 
     BEIJING (AP) – An unusual security breach has prompted Apple to remove some applications from its App Store but says developers in China obtained the development tools from “untrusted sources” rather than the company itself. Developers were tricked into using software tools that added malicious code. Apple gave no details of which companies were affected.
 
     MIDDLETOWN, Calif. (AP) – Two wildfires burning in Northern California have now destroyed nearly 1,600 homes after one blaze north of San Francisco destroyed another 162. The fires have killed at least killed five people and authorities are investigating another death as a possible suicide. That body was found Saturday.
 
     CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington is publicizing a new online tool to produce early warnings in hopes of preventing mass killings. The goal is to combine sophisticated statistical analysis and feedback from experts to help governments, policy makers, advocacy groups and scholars decide where to concentrate their efforts.
