Rd. 1 when it struck a 1998 Volvo semi, towing a 2006 Timpte trailer. The Volvo was attempting to turn west onto Hwy. 46 from Richland Co. Rd. 1. The bus struck the trailer on the driver’s side. Both the bus and Volvo/Timpte combination came to rest on Hwy. 46 with the bus facing east in the eastbound lane and the truck/trailer facing north across both lanes.

A short time after the initial collision, a 2008 Peterbilt, towing a 2007 Wilson trailer, was westbound on Hwy. 46 and struck the Volvo/Timpte combination on the passenger side. The Timpte trailer split in two, causing the trailer to spill its load of soybeans. The Peterbilt came to rest facing west across both lanes of Hwy. 46.

After the 2008 Peterbilt collided into the Volvo/Timpte combination, a 2006 Peterbilt, towing a 1986 dump trailer, was westbound on Hwy. 46 and approached the crash scene. The 2006 Peterbilt was able to avoid the crash scene and came to a stop on the westbound shoulder. After the 2006 Peterbilt came to a stop, a 1999 International, towing a 1999 Eastman dump trailer, came upon the crash scene and rear-ended the trailer towed by the 2008 Peterbilt, which rear-ended the dump trailer towed by the 2006 Peterbilt. The International came to rest facing northwest across the westbound lanes and shoulder of Hwy. 46.

The school bus was driven by Cathryn Jostad, 64, of Kindred. Jostad was transported to Essentia Hospital with serious injuries. The uninjured driver of the 2008 Peterbilt was Jerry Mallett, 60, of Buffalo, ND. The uninjured driver of the 2006 Peterbilt was Wesley Briggs, 68, of Kindred. The uninjured driver of the 1999 International was Charles Odegaard, 66, of Walcott.

There were 34 students, two teachers and a para-professional on the Kindred school bus. No students or staff were transported by ambulance or treated on scene for injuries.

The NDHP was assisted on scene by the Richland County and Cass County sheriff’s offices, the North Dakota Department of Transportation, the FM and Kindred ambulances, and the Kindred and Horace fire departments.

Officials say the school bus was travelling eastbound on Hwy 46, a semi was travelling to go west on Hwy 46 when they crashed. Another semi was heading east when it crashed into the first, splitting it in half. The third semi then rear-ended the second semi.

Officials say three students were transported to a local hospital by their parents with minor injuries.

WDAY-TV reports that officials say a semi had stopped on County Road 1 and was turning to go towards Kindred when the semi driver got out of the vehicle because the fog was so dense to see if anyone was coming. When he turned, he collided with the bus.

The driver of the school bus was pinned under the bus for 40 minutes before they were able to get her out.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation and North Dakota Highway Patrol have temporarily closed ND Highway 46, between I-29 and Kindred due to the accident.

Valley City (CSi) A longtime Valley City restaurant and popular stop for motorists here is going out of business.

Thr Forum News Service reports that The Hilltop Cafe, at 820 11th St. S.W. with the Petro Serve convenience store, will close its doors at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Karen Hagemeister, a Charleston, S.C., resident and one of the owners for the past 10 years, said her late ex-husband bought the business 30 years ago. After decades in the family, she said the Hilltop Cafe, like other businesses in smaller communities, was “not doing well” as other restaurants moved in and started competing.

The cafe, which also is owned by Hagemeister’s two sons, Valley City resident Ronald King and Charleston resident Robert King, currently has six employees.

She said the Petro Serve convenience store, which owns the building that includes the cafe, will remain open for business. Hagemeister says, Petro Serve is tentatively planning to tear down the existing building and build a new one next year, and may put in its own restaurant.

A couple days after closing, Hilltop Cafe will hold an end-of-business sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to sell off its furniture, appliances, restaurant equipment and other items.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An Oregon man accused of impersonating an FBI agent in the North Dakota oil patch has been sentenced to the 17 months he’s spent in prison.

Twenty-seven-year-old Steven Goldmann in January pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, under a plea agreement in which prosecutors agreed to dismiss impersonation counts. He was sentenced Friday.

Goldmann, of Portland, Oregon, still faces a hearing on a warrant for violating his probation in Tennessee, where he pleaded guilty two years ago to felony theft of services.

Authorities say Goldmann regularly displayed a gun, holster, mace and badge in Williston, and showed up one day at a coffee shop with a passenger who was handcuffed. Goldmann says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after three tours of duty in Iraq.

STANLEY, N.D. (AP) – Prosecutors have reduced an attempted murder charge against an Idaho man accused of stabbing an Alaska man in the North Dakota oil patch.

31-year-old Travis Barnes, of Post Falls, Idaho, pleaded not guilty Thursday to aggravated assault.

Barnes faces up to five years in prison if convicted on the reduced felony charge.

And President Barack Obama is reacting to the news that House Speaker John Boehner (BAY’-nur) is stepping down, calling Boehner a “good man” and a “patriot.” He also says Boehner has been someone who understands that “you don’t get 100 percent of what you want” and that you “have to work with people who you disagree with.”

Marco Rubio says, “I’m not here to bash anyone, but the time has come to turn the page.” And Donald Trump says Republican congressional leaders like Boehner are “babies.” He said while some people may like Boehner personally, “we want people who are going to get it done.”

SEATTLE (AP) – Fourteen people injured in a deadly crash involving a charter bus and an amphibious tour vehicle are in intensive care in two Seattle hospitals.
