Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) – The sight of a man playing with airsoft guns with kids in his front yard prompted the Valley City Police Chief to pull his gun.

WDAY TV reports, Chief Fred Thompson says he was driving by a home on October 10th when he saw a man holding what appeared to be an AR-15 rifle and children diving behind things. He drew his weapon from about 100 feet away and ordered the man to drop the weapon. When he realized his mistake, Thompson says he explained the misunderstanding to the man.

No weapons were fired and no one was injured.

Thompson says the incident had nothing to do with his recent announcement that he is resigning in January.

The man who reportedly had the gun drawn on him did not respond to a request for comment.

 

Jamestown(CSi) October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and communities across the state will be hosting events to bring attention to ending domestic violence. Safe Shelter, CAWS North Dakota, the state dual sexual assault and domestic violence coalition, along with the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program – North Dakota National Guard will be displaying the Clothesline Project at University of Jamestown’s Reiland Fine Arts Center on October 23, 2015.

On Thursday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, SAFE Shelter, Prevention Coordinator, Mary Thysell said, The Clothesline Project is a T-shirt display that bears witness to violence against women and aids in the healing process for survivors and the loved ones of victims.

University of Jamestown, Vice President of Marketing, Tena Lawrence also adds, “The University of Jamestown welcomes the Clothesline Project on campus as visual reminder that domestic violence affects people of every level of education and in all socio-economic classes.”

One in four women will be the victim of domestic violence at some point in her lifetime. In 2014 there were 5,181 incidents of domestic violence reported to crisis intervention centers in North Dakota. Throughout October, communities across the country will mourn for those whose lives were taken by domestic violence, celebrate the tremendous progress the violence against women movement has made over the years, and connect with one another with a true sense of unity to end domestic violence.

Mary adds, “Domestic violence and sexual assault are still ongoing problems in our community for women, children and men. The t-shirts in the Clothesline Project are testimony to the long lasting impact of that violence on us as individuals and as a community.”

The clothesline is representative of the days when doing laundry was considered women’s work and neighborhood women exchanged stories over backyard fences when hanging their clothes out to dry. The original Clothesline Project began with 31 shirts hung in Hyannis, Massachusetts in October of 1990. North Dakota had its first Clothesline Project display in 1995 at the Great Hall of the Capitol Building during the legislative session. There were 114 shirts on display at that time.”

The Clothesline Project will be on display in the Reiland Fine Arts Center, University of Jamestown from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on October 23rd, 2015. At 7:00 p.m. a 15 minute video entitled

“Telling Amy’s Story” will be shown. The display and video screening are free of charge and open to the public.

Mary also said that SAFE Shelter will be bringing the message of domestic and sexual violence prevention to Jamestown and Carrington schools.

A program called “Safe Dates,” is available, a 10 session program.

She added that moving away from the stigma of getting help is a major goal of those working in the area of support.

She said the SAFE Shelter 24 hour line is available 24/7 at 701-251-2300.

　

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce reports, Jamestown has received the Community of the Year, Award, for its forestry program.

Jamestown received the award for its work to grow and diversify it’s urban forest.

Over the last two years the City Of Jamestown has:

1)developed a landscape ordinance which requires commercial properties and institutions to landscape their properties with trees and shrubs.

2) Started the Planting Partners Program which is a privately funded cost share program that gives homeowners and citizens up to $50 back and a limit of $400 per property for planting trees on the boulevard.

3) Constructed a gravel bed nursery which allows the city to purchase bareroot trees at a very low cost.

These trees are held in the gravel bed through the summer which allows them to put on substantial amounts of roots and then they are planted in the fall. This root growth results in an extremely high survival rate. The gravel bed nursery could allow the city to be very proactive in building a diverse, resilient urban forest.

4) The City Of Jamestown has also planted over 400 trees in the last two years including the 233 trees in the East Business Loop Landscape Project.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grand Forks police are investigating the early morning stabbing of a person who later died.
 
     Police say the male victim was stabbed multiple times during a fight with another person near the victim’s apartment early Friday. The victim fled in a vehicle and eventually crashed it into two parked cars.
 
     The driver was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death was not immediately released, nor was the person immediately identified.
 
     Police were interviewing witnesses Friday morning. Authorities said they had “a known suspect” and that the public was not in danger.

 

 HOOPLE, N.D. (AP) – A 68-year-old Hoople man was killed when the car he was driving hit a tractor trailer backing out on North Dakota Highway 18. The North Dakota Highway Patrol says Russell Crowder died in the crash about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. A passenger in the car, 64-year-old Betty Crowder, also of Hoople, was taken to a Park River hospital with injuries. The truck driver, 29-year-old Hassan Stephens, was uninjured.

 

 WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Williston police say no one was injured when a man allegedly fired a gun inside a nursing home.
 
     Authorities say a 50-year-old man walked into the Bethel Lutheran Nursing and Rehabilitation Center about 9 p.m. Tuesday and began pointing the weapon at people.
 
     Lt. David Peterson says the man fired a shot through a glass side door before eventually surrendering to officers without incident.
 
    Neither police nor nursing home administrators would comment on a possible motive.
 
     The suspect was being held without bond as investigators prepared formal charges.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Fargo woman accused of terrorizing police officers after calling an ambulance to take her children to school is now facing an additional charge of child abuse or neglect.
 
     Thirty-year-old Dana Lee could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted on both felonies.
 
     Authorities allege Lee called 911 the morning of Oct. 12, requesting an ambulance to take her 2- and 6-year-old children to school, citing strong winds. Police say she later threatened to shoot officers who responded to her home.
 
     Defense attorney Nicholas Thornton has told The Associated Press that Lee is presumed innocent, and that “we are working to get Ms. Lee the help she needs.”

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation says $57 million in federal loans have been given to a pair of North Dakota electrical cooperatives for improvements to electrical infrastructure in their service areas.
 
     The delegation says the U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded a loan of $30 million to the North Central Electric Cooperative and a $27 million loan to Burke-Divide Electric Cooperative.
 
     The funds are made available through a program that makes loans for the maintenance and improvement of electrical infrastructure in areas where commercial capital is not available.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says the U.S. Department of Education has approved North Dakota’s state equity plan to ensure quality teachers in classrooms.
 
     Baesler says the state will use the plan to ensure that all students in every part of the state are taught by professional teachers.
 
     The Department of Education required all states to submit a plan to ensure that poor and minority children are not taught at higher rates than other children by inexperienced, unqualified or out-of-field teachers.
 
     The department praised North Dakota for its incentives, saying that the state’s teachers are provided with easily accessible information about loan forgiveness and can receive signing bonuses to work in hard-to-staff areas.
 
     Baesler says the Department of Public Instruction is committed to putting the plan in action.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The publisher of the Bismarck Tribune has announced that he will seek the Republican nomination for North Dakota state auditor.
 
     Publisher Brian Kroshus (KROH’-shuhs ) says he has been considering running for office since his college days at North Dakota State University and now seems to be the right time.
 
     The 51-year-old executive has been with the newspaper since July 1997 and was named publisher in 2005.
 
     Kroshus says he feels his private sector experience, fiscal conservatism and work in creating efficiencies in day-to-day operations make him a good fit for the position.
 
     On Wednesday, North Dakota State Auditor Robert Peterson told The Associated Press that he won’t seek a sixth term, marking an end of a more than four-decade father-son dynasty in the office.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A committee that will search for the next president of the University of North Dakota has set a timeline for the process. WDAZ-TV reports that the group gathered on campus Wednesday for its initial meeting, and decided to post the position November 13th. The list of candidates will be announced about two months later, and the committee will whittle the field down to 2-4 finalists by mid-March.
 

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – City leaders in Williston have put on hold a proposal to permanently ban metal buildings downtown.
 
City commissioners this week tabled a final decision on the proposal so officials can meet with developers to hear their concerns.
 
     Advocates of the proposal recommended by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission say it would improve the appearance of downtown. But some commissioners and developers in the oil patch hub worry it might add to the expense of building downtown and discourage new projects.
 
     Two commissioners and city Senior Planner Rachel Wressler will meet with developers by the end of November.

 MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The availability of Wisconsin’s Corey Clement for Saturday’s game against Illinois remains unclear as the running back recovers from sports hernia surgery. Clement rushed for nearly 1,000 yards last season as the backup to Heisman Trophy runner-up Melvin Gordon. He was slated to take the starting job.
 
     CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) – Illinois says running back Josh Ferguson will miss Saturday’s game against Wisconsin and wide receiver Marchie Murdock will join him on the sideline. Illinois says Ferguson will again be out with the shoulder injury he suffered against Nebraska. The senior back also missed the Iowa game. Murdock is out with a thigh bruise.

   LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Louisville men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino vows he “will not resign” as investigations continue into an escort’s book allegations that former Cardinals staffer Andre McGee hired her and other dancers to strip and have sex with recruits and players. The Hall of Fame coach apologized on his website to fans for having to “endure the pain” of allegations by Katina Powell that McGee paid strippers to perform 22 shows from 2010-14 at the players’ dormitory. Pitino has denied knowledge of the activities described in Powell’s book.

 LOS ANGELES (AP) – Don Mattingly won’t return as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers next year. Team president Andrew Friedman and general manager Farhan Zaidi repeatedly declined to specify why the sides parted ways, all the while expressing their respect and admiration for Mattingly. The Dodgers went 446-363 in five years under Mattingly, finishing with a winning record in every season and claiming the last three NL West titles without capturing a pennant.
 

UNDATED (AP) – The best-of-seven American League Championship Series has moved back to Kansas City for Game 6 between the Blue Jays and Royals Friday night.
 
     The Jays stayed alive by winning Game 5 at home on Wednesday, but the Royals still hold a 3-2 lead in the series. If the Royals can’t close it out with a Game 6 win, the seventh and deciding game will be played in KC on Saturday.
 
     The pitching matchup for Game 6 has David Price going for the Jays against Yordano Ventura.
 
     The series winner will face the New York Mets in the World Series, starting Tuesday.

  LAS VEGAS (AP) – Canada’s David Hearn birdied his final three holes for a 7-under 64 and a share of the lead through one round of the PGA’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Hearn had eight birdies and a bogey as he seeks his first PGA Tour victory. Michael Thompson, Mark Hubbard and Tyler Aldridge also topped the leaderboard at TPC Summerlin, although Aldridge had two holes left when play was suspended because of darkness.

 

 TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) – South Korean Ji Eun-hee shot a 6-under 66 in windy conditions to take a one-stroke lead in the LPGA Taiwan Championship. The winner of the 2008 LPGA Championship and 2009 U.S. Women’s Open leads a player from China.
 
     American Morgan Pressel, England’s Charley Hull, Germany’s Sandra Gal and South Korea’s Sun Young Yoo are two back after opening with 68s.

UNDATED (AP) – A spokeswoman for the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization says Hurricane Patricia’s 200 mph winds are strong enough “to get a plane in the air and keep it flying.” Claire Nullis says the storm’s force is comparable to that of Typhoon Haiyan (HY’-ahn), which left more than 7,300 dead or missing in the Philippines two years ago. The storm is headed for Mexico’s Pacific coast and expected to make landfall later today.
 
     PARIS (AP) – French officials say 42 people have died in the fiery collision of a bus carrying retirees on a day trip and a truck hauling lumber. Officials say eight people escaped the burning bus and four are gravely injured. Authorities have begun an investigation and one official says the truck driver may have lost control of his vehicle.
 
     BERKASOVO, Serbia (AP) – The U.N. refugee agency says reports are growing of predators preying on refugee and migrant children trying to make their way into Europe. UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming says children in southeastern Europe have been forced into sex to pay for the continuation of their journeys. She says the agency is going public to pressure governments along the route to do more to help.
 
     JERUSALEM (AP) – Israel’s military says it is looking into the circumstances of a Palestinian man beaten by Israeli soldiers. An Israeli human rights group has released security camera footage showing several Israeli soldiers beating and kicking the man for several minutes as he lies curled up in a defensive position on the floor of a storage room. The soldiers claimed he threw rocks but the man was released after police saw the footage five days later.
 
     HAZLET, N.J. (AP) – A New Jersey homeowner got a surprise package in the mail recently. It turned out to be 50 pounds of marijuana addressed to someone who didn’t live at the address in Hazlet. The homeowner had called police, who are now inviting the real owner to appear and stake a claim.
