Valley City (CSi) At the October 26, 2015 Special Meeting of the Valley City Public School Board, Superintendent, Dean Koppelman officially announced his retirement, at the end of this school year.

Koppelman’s final day as superintendent will be July 1, 2016.

The search for a new superintendent for the Valley City School district has started, and school board chairperson Joyce Braunagel says they hope to make a final selection by February of 2016.

The following is a letter of resignation from Dean Koppelman;

Dear Valley City Public School Board Members,

I believe our life in a sense is like a book, in that there are chapters to our life. Unlike a book, our life does not have a specific number of chapters. We don’t know how many chapters we have in our life, but I guess that’s something that makes life interesting and somewhat of a mystery at times.

I have reached a new chapter in my life and with that in mind it is with sadness and excitement I submit to you my letter of resignation/retirement as Superintendent of the Valley City Public School District, effective as of July 1, 2016. Until that time, I will continue to give my utmost effort as your Superintendent of Schools and I look forward to coming to work each and every day. We have some of the best students in the state of North Dakota here in Valley City and I owe it to them to do everything I can in my last year to help make a positive difference in their lives.

I have had a very enjoyable and memorable career in education, with some of the best years having been spent here in Valley City. I will take many, many positive memories with me from the 18 years I will have served as Superintendent of Schools. Valley City is a great community in which to live and work and I cannot thank our community enough for the support that is given to our educational system, especially to our students.

Here in Valley City I have worked with many outstanding staff members (teachers, administrators, support staff, and central office staff). The most important working relationship for a Superintendent of Schools is with the School Board, as I believe the leadership and direction of the school district starts at that level. I cannot say thank you enough, to the School Board members of Valley City Public Schools that I have worked with in the past and those I work with today for providing me the opportunity to serve our school district. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as Superintendent of Schools in one of the best school districts in North Dakota!

Being a Superintendent of Schools has been more than a job to me, it has been a sincere passion, as I have always enjoyed doing what I can to help make a difference in the lives of students and all of the staff who work in our schools. The most precious memories I will take with me is the contact I have had with thousands of young people in my career having served as a teacher, coach, Activities Director, Principal, and Superintendent. Young people bring so much joy to our lives. I don’t know what we would do without them!

I wish you, our students, our staff, our parents, and our community the very best in the future. There will always be a place in my heart for one of the best school districts and communities in the state of North Dakota!!

Go “Hi-Liners!”

Sincerely,

Dean Koppelman
Superintendent of Schools

The Selfridge man hasn’t been publicly identified. Loven wouldn’t confirm whether authorities suspect foul play.

Heinen says the FBI arrived at 4 a.m. and interviewed him.

Update…

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a Georgia man who was killed when struck by a semitrailer in the western North Dakota oil patch.

The Highway Patrol says 20-year-old Benjamin Enterman, of Warner Robins, Georgia, was taking measurements on state Highway 23 in McKenzie County for an engineering company on Tuesday afternoon when he was struck. He died at the scene.

The Arizona man driving the semi was not hurt. No charges were immediately filed in the incident.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The fate of a man accused of sex trafficking in the Williston area is in the hands of federal court jurors in Bismarck.

Both sides in the Keith Graves trial have rested their case, and jury deliberations were beginning Thursday.

Graves is defending himself against 11 charges related to sex trafficking and drugs. Women who testified for the prosecution alleged that Graves used a handgun, bat and fists to keep them in line.

Graves did not testify on his own behalf but maintained there’s insufficient evidence to convict him.

Graves was one of the main subjects in “The Overnighters,” which won an award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. It followed a pastor who opened his church to homeless oil workers.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Police in Devils Lake say a fire that destroyed the fast food restaurant Hardee’s over the weekend was intentionally set.

Nobody was injured during the blaze that was reported about 3 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters battled the flames at the restaurant off U.S. Highway 2 for about three to four hours.

Devils Lake Police Chief Keith Schroeder says authorities are following various leads in the arson case.

CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) – Students at an elementary school on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation that was damaged by a grass fire will have to wait a little longer to return to their regular classrooms.

The 120 students have been attending classes in Solen since the Oct. 11 blaze that melted playground equipment and filled the Cannon Ball school with smoke and soot.

They were to return to Cannon Ball on Wednesday, but school administrator Justin Fryer says cleanup isn’t done.

Fryer says officials will inspect the building Friday with hopes of moving students back in on Monday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Agriculture Department is launching a research program to help determine whether industrial hemp can be a viable commodity in the state.

It comes eight years after the department issued the nation’s first hemp-growing licenses. Efforts to further the industry in the years that followed were hampered by federal drug law that doesn’t differentiate between marijuana and its cousin hemp, which can be used for a variety of products.

The 2014 farm bill changed that. It allows for research of hemp in states like North Dakota that permit its cultivation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department says it will have about $930,000 of federal grant money available for its recreational trail program in 2017.

Applicants may request grant amounts ranging from a minimum of $10,000 up to a maximum of $200,000. Project sponsors must have at least 20 percent match funding available when the application is submitted.

Applications for 2017 can be found at www.parkrec.nd.gov .

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The Lewis and Clark Bridge on U.S. Highway 85 south of Williston is closing for much of the day for maintenance work.

The highway is the major north-south artery in the western North Dakota oil patch. Motorists will need to take alternate routes between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday.

The state Transportation Department says alternative routes over the Missouri River include the Four Bears Bridge on state Highway 23 near New Town, the Yellowstone Bridge near Fairview on state Highway 200 and the Mon/Dak Bridge near Buford on state Highway 58.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – University of North Dakota officials say next week’s runoff vote on a new nickname might not determine the winner after all. Voters will be deciding among three nickname options that were the most popular choices in the first round of voting. Officials say another runoff will be held if the winning choice does not achieve a majority.

A former Bismarck mayor is still trying to keep the University of North Dakota from selecting a new athletic nickname.

On Tuesday Marlan “Hawk” Haakenson registered trademarks for the words “Upper North Dakota Fighting Hawks,” “Upper North Dakota Roughriders” and “Upper North Dakota Nodaks.”

He says, “I decided to include ‘Upper North Dakota’ because the first letters in those three words are U, N and D.”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill has announced his retirement because of health reasons. Kill has epilepsy and had to take a leave of absence from the team in 2013 while dealing with seizures. His five-year record at Minnesota was 29-29 while overall he is 156-102.

NEW YORK (AP) – Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown and his championship ring will be reunited nearly half a century after it was stolen from his home.

Brown will get back the 1964 championship ring after settling a lawsuit he brought against a memorabilia dealer. Except for the return of the ring, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The dealer ended up with the ring decades after someone stole it from Brown’s Cleveland home in 1966.

Brown said he plans to give the ring to one of his children, perhaps for Christmas.

In world and national news….

WASHINGTON (AP) – House conservatives may be grumbling about having more say in how the chamber operates, but Republicans are ready to make Rep. Paul Ryan the new House speaker. The young lawmaker from Wisconsin plans to ask both parties for a period of healing and a focus on working families, in his acceptance speech. Before the roll call vote, outgoing Speaker John Boehner will deliver his final remarks to the chamber where he served for a quarter of a century.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Iowa caucuses are just three months away, and the 2016 Republican field is as unsettled as ever after last night’s debate. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio deflected an attack on his voting record by former mentor and Florida Gov. Jeb Bush so well, Bush never seemed to recover from the exchange. But there’s no sign that Bush is close to abandoning his campaign.

VIENNA (AP) – Syria’s exiled opposition is rejecting any role for President Bashar Assad in the political transition “even for one day.” A member of the Syrian National Coalition warned against wasting time on political initiatives like Vienna. He says they just allow the military time to regain territories from the rebels. The comments come as diplomats converge on Vienna for the latest round of peace talks. At the table for the first time: Iran, a staunch supporter of Assad.

BEIJING (AP) – China’s state news agency says the ruling Communist Party has decided to abolish the policy that allows couples to have but one child. Now couples can have two children. The country has moved in recent years toward easing restrictions in place since 1980 to curb the population and limit demands for water and other resources.

BRUSSELS (AP) – A Saudi blogger sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for insulting Muslim clerics has won the European Union’s prestigious Sakharov Prize for human rights. Raif Badawi was honored with the award as a symbol of the fight for freedom of speech. The European Parliament assembly in Strasbourg, France, greeted the announcement with a standing ovation today.
