SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – NBC’s Al Roker will be in North Dakota and South Dakota next week as he attempts to set the world record for the fastest time ever for reporting the weather from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Roker will kick off his world record attempt Friday in Hawaii and plans to hit all states and D.C. in just one week. He will be in Fargo, North Dakota, and Sioux Falls on Monday.
Roker will travel by planes, trains and automobiles.
Last year, Roker completed a 34-hour marathon weather forecast that was certified by Guinness World Records as the longest continuous live weather broadcast.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Bus Depot will open a week later than planned.
Charlie Kourajian says, when the Jefferson Bus Lines bus comes to Jamestown on Monday, November 16, it will be stopping at the new bus depot at 119 – 2nd Ave. S.E.
He says Jefferson Bus Lines called him Tuesday and said they could not get all the electronic changes done by Monday, November 9th .
Thanks to the generosity of the parishioners of the First Congregational Church of Christ, the garage on their parking lot has been remodeled to be the local bus depot.
The project was funded by a grant from the City of Jamestown and donations from many community-minded people.
Except for professional services like excavating, plumbing, electrical work, all work was done by volunteers.
The bus depot will be operated by volunteers from the Jamestown Bus Stop, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation and will be open during the times the buses arrive, which are 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (eastbound) and then again at 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (westbound). It will be manned during open hours.
At this time, the depot is not set up to sell tickets, but will be before the end of the year.
Valley City (CSi) The Barnes County Commission has accepted the resignation of Veterans Service Officer Chad Clement.
His resignation became effective Tuesday.
During a Grievance Committee hearing on Friday, Clement pointed out Barnes County Commission John Froehlich as an elected official, among others that are arrogant in handling Barnes County employees. He also had a concern about Barnes County Auditor, Beth Didier.
Four Barnes County Commission Tuesday voted to accept the resignation and to find a replacement for Clement as soon as possible.
Commissioner Mike Metcalf was on vacation and absent from the meeting.
Clement has served as the Barnes County Veterans Service Officer since May 25 of 2015.
Valley City (CSi) A fire Tuesday destroyed a farm shed and its contents northwest of Valley City.
A boat and other items were inside the shed at the Thomsen farm at the time of the fire.
Barnes Chief Deputy Don Fiebiger said flames were shooting out of the shed when upon arrival . No other structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.
Fiebiger says the preliminary cause of the fire concerns a torch in the shed. as the cause remains under investigation, by the Valley City Rural Fire Department.
Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund says Jamestown will host the
Duel in the Dirt bull riding event, on November 20, 21, 2015, at the Jamestown Civic Center.
On Tuesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Swedlund said this is the first time Jamestown has hosted the event, a part of the bull riding circuit, that has previously been held in Sanborn, and several events at other North Dakota locations.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple is defending his decision to pay nearly $100,000 as retention bonuses to five members of his staff.
Dalrymple announced in August that he won’t seek re-election in 2016. He tells The Associated Press that the bonuses were paid to keep key people in his administration “who are important to the process in governing the state of North Dakota.”
Democrats are questioning the bonuses, which were first reported by KFGO-AM radio on Monday after an open records request.
Democratic House Minority Leader Kenton Onstad says the bonuses to the governor’s staff “just doesn’t smell right.”
Onstad says the state’s program of paying recruiting and retention bonuses is important for hard-to-fill jobs in the state’s oil patch. But he questions if that’s the case in the governor’s office.
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – A North Dakota man who prosecutors say masterminded a murder-for hire plot that left two people dead has withdrawn his guilty plea. That’s after a federal judge in Washington state determined James Henriksen should serve a life sentence for ordering the murders of Kristopher Clarke and Doug Carlile. Federal prosecutors plan to file a motion that would enable a lesser sentence that Henrikson already agreed to in September.
HAVRE, Mont. (AP) – A 14-year-old Montana girl who was the subject of a missing and endangered person alert has been found safe. The girl disappeared Monday and sent messages to her mother saying she was going to walk to meet her in North Dakota. Police found the girl after getting a tip from a citizen.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Rain over the past week has slowed the harvests of corn and sunflowers in North Dakota, though both remain ahead of the average pace.
The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that 70 percent of the sunflowers are harvested, compared with the average of 56 percent. And the corn harvest is 83 percent complete, well ahead of the 69 percent average.
North Dakota’s winter wheat crop is rated 71 percent in good to excellent condition. Nearly all of the crop has emerged. Winter wheat is seeded and emerges in the fall, goes dormant over winter, begins growing again in the spring and is harvested in the summer.
Pasture and range conditions statewide are rated 43 percent good to excellent. Stock water supplies are 79 percent adequate to surplus.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The city of Minot will have a female fire chief for the first time in its history.
Grand Forks Battalion Chief Kelli Flermoen is a 20-year veteran of the Grand Forks Fire Department. She’ll succeed Minot Chief CJ Craven, who’s retiring Jan. 8 after 35 years with the department including eight as its leader.
Flermoen sees a lot of similarities between Grand Forks and Minot, including that both communities have fought back from devastating floods.
Flermoen is a Minnesota native who holds associate degrees in fire technology and administration and in criminal justice, a bachelor’s degree in public administration and a master’s degree in strategic leadership.
The North Dakota Firefighter’s Association says Flermoen is believed to be the first female fire chief in one of the state’s four largest cities.
CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) – Students in Cannon Ball who were displaced by a grass fire on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation have returned to their regular classrooms.
The Oct. 11 blaze melted playground equipment and filled Cannon Ball Elementary School with smoke and soot. The 115 students attended classes in nearby Solen during cleanup.
The students returned to the Cannon Ball school on Tuesday.
Administrator Justin Fryer says Cannon Ball staff and students were warmly received in Solen, but it’s good to be back in familiar surroundings.
The fire came within a few feet of the school and destroyed the playground. Fryer says students are making do playing ball and other games like tag. He says the school plans to put in a new playground next spring.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A longtime federal prosecutor in North Dakota has been promoted.
Keith Reisenauer has been named first assistant U.S. attorney, which makes him second in command to U.S. Attorney Christopher Myers.
Reisenauer is a Mandan native who earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Dakota. He has been a federal prosecutor since 1991.
Reisenauer served as assistant Cass County state’s attorney from 1983-91.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An auction for the rights to drill for oil on North Dakota state lands has raised $8.4 million.
The state Department of Trust Lands auctioned exploration rights to more than 10,500 acres in nine western North Dakota counties on Tuesday.
The average payment ranged from just more than $1 per acre in Sioux County to more than $10,700 per acre in Mountrail County.
The money goes into trust funds that benefit education.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Annual vehicle passes for state parks in North Dakota are now available for the 2016 season.
The state Parks and Recreation Department began selling the pass this week. It provides entrance into any state park and is good until April 30, 2017.
The pass costs $25. There are $5 discounts for senior citizens and disabled veterans.
Parks and Rec sold nearly 16,700 vehicle passes for the 2015 season, up from about 15,300 the previous year.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota State University football team has moved up again in both national polls after beating Southern Illinois 35-29 on the road Saturday.
The Bison moved up one spot to No. 6 in the STATS media poll and up one spot to a tie with McNeese State for No. 5 in the coaches poll.
Jacksonville State is atop both polls, followed by Illinois State, Chattanooga and Eastern Washington. Richmond is No. 5 in the STATS poll.
NDSU hosts Western Illinois in the Harvest Bowl game at the Fargodome this Saturday. Bison players will wear an alternate helmet that’s green rather than yellow. The helmet will have the traditional Bison logo, along with a head of wheat as a center stripe.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference has suspended North Dakota’s senior forward Drake Caggiula (kah-JOO’-luh) for one game, citing an illegal hit during Saturday’s game at Colorado College.
The league says Caggiula was suspended after the review of a play in which “a hit was delivered to the head” of a Colorado College player during the second period of the game at The Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs.
Caggiula will be required to serve the suspension during North Dakota’s game Friday against Wisconsin. North Dakota’s spokesman didn’t immediately return phone messages seeking comment on the suspension Tuesday.
Caggiula, a senior forward from Whitby, Ontario, leads the team in assists, points, penalties and penalty minutes this season. He has two goals and seven assists in eight games
Bismarck (CSi) The North Dakota Game and Fish Department enforcement personnel are issuing a reminder that a permit is required before taking possession, or any part, of a dead deer found near a road or in a field, such as a road kill.
This includes the skull with antlers. Only shed antlers can be possessed without a permit.
Permits to possess are free and available from game wardens and local law enforcement offices.
In addition, hunters are reminded to properly dispose of dead deer. Harvested deer cannot be left on the side of a roadway or in a ditch, and deer parts cannot be discarded in commercial dumpsters.

Joel Bouagnon’s 2-yard touchdown with 1:59 remaining lifted the 6-3 Huskies to their sixth consecutive victory against the Rockets, who are 7-1. Bouagnon rushed for 87 yards on 26 carries.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota Wild right wing Justin Fontaine has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee that’s expected to keep him out four to six weeks. The Wild announced Fontaine’s diagnosis on Tuesday. He was injured in the game on Friday against Chicago.

NEW YORK (AP)–Terry Collins is being rewarded for taking the New York Mets to the World Series. The National League champion Mets have called a news conference today at which it is likely to be announced that the 66-year-old Collins is getting a new two-year contract.

The Tigers have declined their $10 million option on reliever and former Twin, Joe Nathan, making the 40-year-old closer eligible for free agency. The decision costs the team a $1 million buyout. NASCAR-KENSETH SUSPENDED…
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – NASCAR has suspended Matt Kenseth for the next two races after he intentionally wrecked Joey Logano late in the race at Martinsville Sunday.
Logano was leading the race in an effort to wrap up his fourth straight win when Kenseth, who was nine laps down, rode him into the wall.
It was payback for when Logano pushed Kenseth out of the way, then went on to win when both were contending for the race in Kansas City three races ago.
Because of the wreck, Logano is now last in the eight-driver field with two races remaining to earn a bid into the title-deciding finale on Nov. 22.
Kenseth has also been placed on probation for six months.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Today officially marks the start of primary season in New Hampshire. The first in line to sign up are expected to be Democrat Martin O’Malley and Republican Donald Trump for the first-in-the-nation vote. Both O’Malley and Trump plan to sign up at the secretary of state’s office today. For the 2012 election, 44 presidential candidates from 26 states signed up. The all-time high was 61 in 1992.
LONDON (AP) – Privacy advocates are expressing concern about proposed legislation that would give British police and spies new powers to comb through citizens’ online activity. The Investigatory Powers Bill, being published today, replaces a patchwork of laws, some dating from the Web’s infancy. Home Secretary Theresa May insists it contains safeguards against abuse. But civil liberties groups are alarmed by reports that the government will make Internet service providers keep records of users’ Web and social media activity for a year.
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) – Volkswagen’s emissions scandal is hitting the automakers stock shares hard. The company’s ordinary shares slid 9.7 percent in morning trading in Europe after the company said it had understated carbon dioxide emissions for 800,000 cars, widening its scandal over cheating on U.S. diesel emissions tests.
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) – With the resignation of Romania’s government over a deadly nightclub fire that prompted mass protests, the main opposition party is calling for early elections. The fire killed more than 30 people and added to already existing popular mistrust of the government.
PARIS (AP) – France is shifting its policy on blood donations by gay men by ending a ban starting next spring. France’s health minister says it’s the end “of a taboo and discrimination.” She spoke at a meeting in the Health Ministry today after experts studied the issue. A European Court of Justice ruling in April found that government bans must follow strict conditions. Many governments had imposed lifetime bans on gay men, saying they are more likely than other groups to have HIV.
