BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A system that brings treated Missouri River water to northwestern North Dakota has experienced a significant drop in industrial water sales as activity has slowed in the oil patch.

Western Area Water Supply project Executive Director Jaret Wirtz says WAWS can weather the period of slow sales because it is ahead on paying off $189 million in state loans.

Gross monthly industrial water sales through WAWS have slipped from a peak of more than $4 million in October 2014 to under $1 million in June.

The $480 million water system is still being completed. A five-county area will get water when the project is done. The Independent Water Providers group says the scope of the project should be re-examined given the oil slowdown.

In sports…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Tens of thousands of people in orange will be dotting the North Dakota countryside starting this afternoon, as North Dakota’s deer gun season gets underway at noon.

The 43,275 deer gun licenses that were made available for this fall’s hunt is the lowest amount in nearly 40 years, due to declining habitat and some recent tough winters.

Hunting of mule deer does in the western Badlands also is not being allowed for the fourth straight season, to help the population recover.

But Game and Fish Wildlife Chief Jeb Williams says with another mild winter, that restriction could be lifted next year.

This year’s season runs through Nov. 22.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A recent Game and Fish Department survey indicates that the mule deer population in North Dakota’s western Badlands is continuing to recover.      Kenseth loses appeals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Matt Kenseth’s two-race suspension will stand.

The driver lost appeals hearings in front of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel and the panel’s final appeals officer.  Kenseth will miss upcoming races at Texas and Phoenix before he’s eligible to return for the Nov. 22 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Kenseth was punished for intentionally wrecking Joey Logano over the weekend during the race at Martinsville. NASCAR says it punished Kenseth harshly because his decision to wreck Logano altered the outcome of a race and that is never supposed to happen. Kenseth maintains he was exacting retribution after Logano wrecked him three races earlier, damaging his chances to advance in NASCAR’s playoffs.

In world and national news…

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – It’s still not known if weather played a role in the crash of a charter bus in Arkansas that killed as many as six people.      ATHENS, Greece (AP) – France is apparently responding to criticism about an inadequate response to the refugee crisis by starting to bus asylum-seekers from elsewhere in Europe to small towns in the French heartland. They are among 200 people France is taking from Italy and Greece this month, 300 next month and 400 in January.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – Astronauts are fixing the air conditioning on the International Space Station today. NASA’s one-year spaceman, Scott Kelly, is back outside the ISS for the work to undo earlier repairs to a leaky cooling line. The ammonia leak has since been plugged another way, so NASA wants the system back in its original configuration. U.S. astronaut Kjell (chehl) Lindgren is helping with the work.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Today’s Labor Department employment report for October will give investors a clue about whether jobs growth is slowing down or not. It also has a bearing on what the Federal Reserve does with interest rates at its December meeting. A FactSet survey predicts 185,000 jobs were added in October and that the unemployment rate remained at 5.1 percent. Any gain above roughly 150,000 jobs would likely keep Federal Reserve policymakers on track for a December interest rate hike.
