Valley City (CSi) Under a proposal to move all law enforcement responsibility to the Barnes County Sheriff’s Office, a petition is circulating in Valley City to disband the Valley City Police Department.

The petition asks residents to vote whether or not to created an Ordinance disbanding the Valley City Police Department.

The sponsoring committee of this petition consists  of Robert Drake, Brian Mindt and Anthony Drake.

Organizer Robert Drake says  supporters believe there is poor communication between the two law agencies, and a doubling of costs.

In Mayor Bob Werkhoven’s opinion,  the petition seems to be too extreme compared to his proposal, placing administrative control of the city police department under the Sheriff’s Office and would not disband the police department completely.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot police are searching for a male they say shot a female in an apartment and fled.

Capt. John Klug says the incident happened about 5:45 p.m. Sunday. The woman was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition early Monday.

Klug says the male and female knew one another. Police have identified the shooter and are looking for him.

No other information was immediately released.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Five people have been arrested in connection with the recent robbery of a fast food restaurant in Fargo in which a worker was injured. A SWAT team took three men into custody on Friday in Fargo, and police arrested two more men in Moorhead, Minnesota, on Saturday. Authorities believe all five are connected to the September 3rd robbery of a Taco John’s restaurant.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Twenty-six University of North Dakota students who were on a party bus were arrested for underage drinking at a bar in Emerado.

The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office says the bartender at Johnny’s Bar tipped off authorities late Friday after noticing that several people in the party bus has fake IDs and were trying to buy alcohol.

Authorities say 26 of the 28 people on the bus were under the legal drinking age. They all identified themselves as students at UND in Grand Forks.

All of the minors were arrested. Officers also confiscated alcohol and marijuana from the bus.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – An advocacy group says the homeless population in the Williston region is dwindling, but the number of people living without adequate shelter is still troubling. The North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People estimates 370 homeless people live in Williams, McKenzie and Divide counties. That’s down from the peak of 624 in 2013. Most homeless in the area say they came there in search of work.

LANKING, N.D. (AP) – Authorities and volunteers are continuing the search for a Grand Forks hunter missing in Walsh County.  GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The Pride of North Dakota event featuring thousands of products for sale wrapped up this weekend at Alerus Center in Grand Forks.      BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is holding two town hall meetings to discuss its pipeline restoration and reclamation program.  GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Officials with the government agency that patrols the nation’s borders say it’s time to discuss ways to get more drone pilots on board.

Many pilots for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations are approaching retirement, and some fear it will be difficult to find replacements.

The agency’s requirements – including 1,500 hours of actual flight time – eliminate a pool of younger flyers, particularly college students who are interested and skilled at flying drones. Changing them would give students a good job out of college instead of building time with regional airlines.

University of North Dakota senior Megan Halek recently aced a training program for the Predator drone flown by the agency and her instructor says she’s ready for CBP. But she doesn’t meet agency standards.
