Jamestown City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says, the fire started in the attic of the two story single family residence, adding that upon arrival there was smoke coming out of the second floor of the two-story home.

There is extensive smoke and water damage to the home, and the fire caused the roof to sag.

The residents the two homeowners and a child were in the home when the fire started and escaped safely, along with the family’s pet cat, The Red Cross was on the scene giving assistance.

The cause is still under investigation.

Reuther added that the city’s ladder truck is out of service with mechanical problems.  It’s not known how long the unit will be out of service.  In the meantime he’ll investigate if another replacement ladder truck is available to Jamestown.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Tourism Grant/Executive Advisory board met Thursday at Historic Franklin School.

Grant requests were made on behalf of The Jamestown Classic Car Club’s, Winter Wheels Car Show, and the Jamestown Branch of the AAUW Frontier Village Schoolhouse, and the 1908 map at the site.

The Jamestown Classic Car Club asked for open-ended dollars, for assistance for advertising, for the event to be held January 30, 2016 at the Jamestown Civic Center, in order to reach more to attend from outside the Jamestown trade area.

Jack Meikle (mick-el) said advertising expenses amount to $1,800 and expenses for promotion events at the show amounts to just over $1,000.

The total costs for the show amounts to $7,500.

The board passed a motion to grant $1,800, providing it’s used within event guidelines. Last year the grant approved was for $3,000 for the 2015 show.

The AAUW request of $762.19 to provide, funds to mount and frame and provide acrylic cover for an historic map of North Dakota, in the Pioneer School, at Frontier Village was approved. The total cost of the program is $1,012.19. The AAUW is providing the balance. The request is in conjunction with the Jamestown Community Foundation.

Kelly Krien said The Jamestown AAUW Branch had helped to furnish and maintain the Pioneer School since it was moved to Frontier Village, by Reece and Margaret Hawkins. AAUW members and friends have also acted as the “school teacher” during the summer season. It has also provided authentic furnishings including books and maps.

Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund reported that Shawn Brannan from Talking Trails, in Mandan, will be back in Jamestown on Monday to give a report on proposals for locations for the signage and cell phone information on Jamestown area tourist locations.

He said the grant application forms will be updated, to include those requesting grants being more specific on requests, and will include three separate categories, for the request areas.

In other business, the Tourism Grant/Executive Advisory Board set the date for the 2016 public fireworks date for July 4, 2016 in conjunction with races at Jamestown Speedway, which will include a $1 charge to the ticket price.

Jamestown Tourism will contribute $10,000 to pay for the fireworks display.

The board approved an increase in the holiday bonuses for Director Searle Swedlund, and Office Manager Emily Bivens.

Leal (CSi) Some parents of students in the Barnes County North School District are proposing a recall of some or all of the school board members.

The meeting was held at the Barnes County North School, Wednesday evening.

Parent spokesman Curt Brown believes the board is micro-managing the Superintendent and Principal Mark Lindahl, who told the board that he and his wife Mary would be moving to the Twin Cities to be closer to their grandchildren.

Lindahl tendered his resignation in September, effective at the end of the school year.

School board chairperson Lori Carlson believes the board has done nothing wrong that would merit a recall of any school board member.

Members can be recalled if 25 percent of the voters approve the recall.

Earlier this month a school board meeting focused on whether or not the district should reduce one teacher per classroom and increase classroom size for teachers or make no change at all.

HORACE, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a 58-year-old Horace man suffered a serious injury to his right hand when an explosive device detonated

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says Steven Green was taken to a hospital in Minnesota’s Twin Cities for treatment. His condition was not known.

Authorities say the initial investigation concluded that the device was an illegal firework. No property damage occurred as a result of the explosion Thursday afternoon and nearby residents weren’t endangered.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A semitrailer crashed in a residential neighborhood in Fargo after the driver suffered a medical problem.

The Highway Patrol says the man lost control of his rig Thursday afternoon and it veered off Interstate 29, crashing through two fences and trees before coming to rest in the backyard of a home. The home was not damaged.

The 46-year-old truck driver from Canada was taken to a hospital. His condition was not released.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says two men have been killed in rollover accident about 25 miles north of Williston.

The patrol says the driver was heading south on Highway 85 about 8 a.m. Thursday when the car crossed the center line into the northbound lane. When the driver overcorrected, the car spun out, entered a ditch, overturned, and struck a utility pole.

Both the driver and passenger were ejected and killed. They are a 26-year-old man from Williston and a 25-year-old man from Roseburg, Oregon. Their names have not been released.

     The accident remains under investigation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Highway Patrol has identified two Underwood residents who died in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 83 near Bismarck. Authorities say 36-year-old Chauncey Radke was driving a car that crossed the median and into oncoming traffic Tuesday evening. The car crashed into a Jeep about 6 miles north of Bismarck. Radke and 29-year-old car passenger Robi Bogo were pronounced dead at the scene.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck mother is facing a felony child abuse charge after allegedly striking a 2-year-old girl in the head with a beer bottle.

Twenty-seven-year-old Katie Letz allegedly had been drinking Tuesday night when she threw the bottle at her boyfriend, who was holding her daughter at the time.

Police say the child suffered a 1-inch cut on her head that required five staples. She was treated at a local hospital.

Letz faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Court documents indicate she is being appointed a public defender. No one answered the telephone at her home on Thursday morning.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Warwick couple is accused in a business robbery and burglary spree. Authorities allege 36-year-olds Billy and Crystal Herman robbed a bar in Buxton and burglarized a convenience store in Grandin on October 30th. They’ve also been charged in the October 27th robbery of a convenience store across the Minnesota state line in Perley.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A western North Dakota man is accused of illegally manufacturing several machine guns.

Ronnie Nikodym, who had been living in Dickinson, had pleaded not guilty to possession and manufacture of illegal firearms. Trial is set for Jan. 12 in Bismarck.

Court documents accuse Nikodym of making guns in June and July that resembled M-16s and an Uzi. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEHN’-juhm) has formally asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review an appeals court ruling that the state’s law banning abortions when a fetal heartbeat is detected is unconstitutional.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a decision last year from federal Judge Daniel Hovland, who ruled the law unconstitutional. The Republican-dominated Legislature passed the law in 2013, though it was quickly put on hold after the state’s lone abortion clinic sued.

Republican Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL’-rimp-ul) has called the law “a legitimate attempt by a state Legislature to discover the boundaries of Roe v. Wade.”

Opponents say it’s an attempt to shutter the abortion clinic in Fargo.

Stenehjem had until the end of November to request a Supreme Court review.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 135-year-old clothing business in North Dakota is calling it quits.

Straus Clothing in Fargo is the last vestige of an operation that began in 1879 and spanned four generations and several North Dakota cities. Owners John and Rick Stern are both in their mid-60s and say it’s time to retire.

Hundreds of people braved bad weather to shop on Thursday. One of them, Dan Armbrust, says it’s a sad day because the store known for high-quality menswear and the Stern family have been mainstays in the community.

The Sterns’ grandfather, Herman Stern, ran the business for seven decades. He received the North Dakota Rough Rider Award for his humanitarian efforts.

John Stern says preparing for the final day was difficult, but he was too busy Thursday to get emotional.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A committee will recommend the city of Minot spare some larger home day cares a sizable expense by eliminating a permit requirement that childcare providers only recently discovered existed.

The city passed a zoning ordinance change in 2013 to require home day cares with more than 14 children to obtain a $250 permit and pay up to $1,250 in city costs.

The change caught day care providers by surprise, and they worry it will hurt their industry.

Mayor Chuck Barney appointed the committee earlier this month to look into the matter. The group will recommend to the Minot Planning Commission on Nov. 30 that the ordinance be amended to require the permits only for home day cares with more than 18 children.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation says the state is getting federal grants totaling more than $743,000 to expand education opportunities in rural areas.

The delegation says the grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture are meant to provide more learning opportunities through universities and public schools across rural North Dakota.

The North Dakota University System is getting the two grants totaling about $505,000 to purchase and expand access to video conferencing equipment and other technologies.

The North Dakota Educational Technology Council is getting $237,817 to upgrade distance learning equipment at 37 public schools, including three schools on American Indian reservations

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo is hosting a Pride of Dakota Holiday Showcase this weekend.

North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says more than 125 companies are expected to have booths at Scheels Arena Friday through Sunday. They’ll be displaying everything from clothing to sporting goods.

Admission is $2 per adult, and shoppers will get a free reusable bag. Shoppers who bring their own reusable bag and members of the military get in for $1.

Retailers also can get $1 off admission by showing their sales tax license at the door. Goehring says it’s an opportunity for retailers to try products from North Dakota businesses and establish wholesale orders.

More than 500 companies are members of the Agriculture Department’s Pride of Dakota branding program.

BRUSSELS (AP) – There’s been a spike in recruiting for the French military in the wake of the Paris attacks. France’s army recruitment spokesman says the number of people wanting to join up has tripled and calls it a “totally new phenomenon.” The Paris prosecutor’s office says that a third body, a woman, was found overnight in an apartment raided by police searching for suspects in last week’s Paris attacks. Suspected mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud (ahb-dehl-hah-MEED’ ah-bah-OOD’) was also killed in the raid.

BAGHDAD (AP) – A Shite mosque in a southern Baghdad neighborhood has been targeted by a suicide bombing and a roadside blast that killed 10 people. Baghdad sees near daily attacks, many claimed by the Sunni militant Islamic State group.

IDOMENI, Greece (AP) – After busting a fake ID ring this week, Greek authorities are looking more closely at immigrants reaching Athens by ferry from the country’s eastern islands.
