Jamestown City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says, the fire started in the attic of the two story single family residence, adding that upon arrival there was smoke coming out of the second floor of the two-story home.

There is extensive smoke and water damage to the home, and the fire caused the roof to sag.

The residents the two homeowners and a child were in the home when the fire started and escaped safely, along with the family’s pet cat, The Red Cross was on the scene giving assistance.

The cause is still under investigation.

Reuther added that the city’s ladder truck is out of service with mechanical problems. It’s not known how long the unit will be out of service. In the meantime he’ll investigate if another replacement ladder truck is available to Jamestown.

Update from NDHP

Jamestown, N.D. – About 2:20-p.m., Friday, Timothy Blowers, was involved in a pursuit fleeing from Law Enforcement on Hwy 52 while driving in a stolen ambulance. Blowers had stolen the ambulance earlier in the day from the Trinity Medical Center in Minot. Blowers was traveling south on Hwy 52, 2 miles south of Carrington, and evaded Law Enforcement by driving into the northbound lanes. Blowers then drove the ambulance into the east ditch, striking a SUV driven by Cole Zaderaka.

Zaderaka was traveling north on Hwy 52 and had pulled his vehicle off onto the side of the road due to the emergency lights he observed on the roadway. Zaderaka then moved his vehicle into the east ditch to avoid the ambulance that was traveling toward him on the roadway. After Zaderaka’s vehicle was in the east ditch it was struck by the ambulance on the driver side, causing the SUV to rollover. The ambulance vaulted and came to rest on its roof.

Zaderaka was transported to Trinity Medical Center for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Blowers was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center and is in custody.

Blowers faces many criminal charges including Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Stolen property, Reckless Endangerment, Aggravated Reckless driving, and Fleeing.

The incident remains under investigation. Criminal charges are pending an investigation by the Foster County Sheriff’s Department and Minot Police Department. The motor vehicle crash is under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Jamestown (CSi) A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday morning for the new Eventide, Jamestown Assisted-living Center.

Meanwhile, groundwork was already underway on a planned 43-unit assisted-living project. The building will stand two stories tall and includes underground parking.

Individual units within the assisted-living facility will have full kitchens and washer and dryer units. There is also community space featuring restaurant-style dining, a fitness center and recreational areas.

The new building is expected to be completed in fall 2016 and will employ between 10 and 15 people when operational.

A zoning change necessary for the project to proceed was initially approved in 2013. Changes to the project required the zoning be reconsidered earlier this summer.

The updated zoning plan was approved in July after Eventide officials met with local residents and the amount of green space between the planned building and the residential areas was increased.

Future plans include connecting the assisted-living facility to the skilled-nursing facility and a phased reconstruction of the entire Eventide Jamestown facility.

Jamestown (CSi) The 25th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Concordia Lutheran Church in Jamestown is again scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2015 from 11-a.m. to 1-p.m.

The morning church service is at 10-a.m.

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSI Cable 2, Pastor Tom Eckstine said over 600 people were served, or received a home delivered meal, a full-course dinner of turkey, potatoes, gravy and all the trimmings last year.

He added that drivers are still welcome to volunteer. To do that, or anyone wishing a home delivered meal, or ride to the church, for the meal or the 10-a.m. Service, may call 701-252-2819

He pointed out that the University of Jamestown helps to prepare the 24 turkeys, donating the kitchen space, with volunteers cooking the turkeys.

Other food items are donated. It takes a lot of volunteers to cook, serve and deliver all those meals.

The meal consists of turkey, stuffing mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, and dessert.

The dinner was the dream of the late Fritz Buegel, who ran the Pantry Café at the time, and the dinner started out small and has grown to what it is today. People attend for a variety of reasons: homelessness, loneliness, physically disabled and just don’t want to cook.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified two men killed in a rollover accident about 25 miles north of Williston.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the Thursday morning wreck killed the 26-year-old driver, John Forrester, of Williston, and a 25-year-old passenger, Matthew Mosell of Roseburg, Oregon.

The patrol says Forrester was heading south on Highway 85 when the car crossed the center line into the northbound lane. When Forrester overcorrected, the car spun out, entered a ditch, overturned and struck a utility pole.

Both Forrester and Mosell were ejected and killed.

HORACE, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a 58-year-old Horace man suffered a serious injury to his right hand when an explosive device detonated

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says Steven Green was taken to a hospital in Minnesota’s Twin Cities for treatment. His condition was not known.

Authorities say the initial investigation concluded that the device was an illegal firework. No property damage occurred as a result of the explosion Thursday afternoon and nearby residents weren’t endangered.

HILLSBORO, N.D. (AP) – Traill County Sheriff Steve Hunt is recovering at the Mayo Clinic after undergoing a liver transplant.

Hunt was diagnosed with a genetic liver disease more than a year ago, and it was complicated by cancer and an infection that developed last month.

Wife Shannon Hunt says the transplant surgery was done Nov. 12. She says it saved her husband’s life.

Steve Hunt will remain in Rochester, Minnesota, for several weeks undergoing tests to make sure everything is OK. He could be home by Christmas and back on the job by early January.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Developers of a recently completed diesel refinery near Dickinson say they’re delaying plans for a second factory in the Minot area due to market conditions.

Bismarck-based MDU Resources Group and Indianapolis-based Calumet Specialty Products Partners built the $430 million Dakota Prairie Refinery near Dickinson. It began selling fuel in May but has lost money in its first few months of operation.

It can process 20,000 barrels of oil each day into diesel fuel and other products. Developers had considered a similar plant in Minot. But MDU spokesman Tim Rasmussen says the company is now focused solely on its Dickinson factory.

Rasmussen says low diesel and naptha prices have contributed to the losses at the Dickinson plant. He says the company might reconsider building the Minot plant if prices rebound.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The Williston Herald in North Dakota and the Sidney Herald in Montana have a new publisher.

Wick Communications Regional Publisher Randy Rickman says Karen Brown will fill the position, along with serving as advertising director.

Brown has more than 30 years of experience in the newspaper industry. She most recently was general manager and media director for the Sidney Daily News in Sidney, Ohio.

Her first day in Williston will be Dec. 7.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Authorities say a father and his 5-year-old son were shot in Minneapolis less than a block from where an unarmed man was recently killed by police.

Investigators say there’s no indication the shooting Thursday is related to ongoing protests over the death of Jamar Clark.

Police say the 40-year-old father was shot in the arm and behind while the boy was shot in the leg. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Officials say the shooter fled in a blue Cadillac.

The shooting is several blocks from the police precinct station where demonstrators have gathered over the fatal shooting of Clark.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – A Spirit Airlines flight bound for Minneapolis had to return to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after authorities say a passenger possibly made a bomb threat.

Spirit Flight 595, an Airbus A320 carrying 92 passengers took off about 10 p.m. Thursday.

In a statement the airline said the flight returned to the gate after about 15 minutes in the air “because of a security issue on board.”

Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion says the flight returned “after a passenger was overheard possibly making mention of a bomb.”

Concepcion says the passengers disembarked the plane while it was swept for explosives. She says no indication of explosives was found on board, but two men would be interviewed by the sheriff’s office and the FBI.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Aberdeen’s mayor says the new owners of a beef plant that closed in 2012 before ramping up production have fired up the equipment and are processing dozens of cattle a day.

That’s welcome news for ranchers in the region tired of having to truck their animals hundreds of miles away.

Aberdeen Mayor Mike Levsen (LEEV’-sehn) says he’s not sure of exact production numbers, but New Angus LLC is slaughtering between a couple dozen and 100 head a day as it trains employees and tests equipment.

The 420,000-square-foot facility is capable of processing 1,500 head of cattle per day at full capacity.

New Angus is owned by San Francisco-based investment firm White Oak Global Advisors, which bought the shuttered Northern Beef Packers for $44.3 million in a December 2013 bankruptcy auction.

In sports…

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – Joey King scored 18 points to help Minnesota beat Missouri State 74-69 in Friday’s consolation bracket at the Puerto Rico Tipoff.

Carlos Morris added 12 points for the Gophers (3-1), who got off to a fast start to build a double-digit lead that reached 18 points early in the second half. They spent the rest of the afternoon fighting off the Bears, who three times came as close as three points in the final 11 minutes, including with 18 seconds left.

Morris and Nate Mason each hit key 3-pointers to answer Missouri State’s best runs. Kevin Dorsey then made two free throws with 16.7 seconds left to turn away the Bears’ final push. He was 4-for-4 from the line in the final 35 seconds.

Camyn Boone scored 17 points to lead Missouri State (0-3).

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota is hoping to put its new nickname on a national stage.

The team that was crowned the Fighting Hawks earlier this week is gunning for the school’s first football playoff berth since moving up to the Division I level in 2008.

UND backers believe a win this weekend on the road at Cal Poly should merit strong consideration to be among the 24 qualifiers in the Football Championship Subdivision tournament.

A playoff berth would have special meaning in a state where most of the football attention has gone to four-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State.

UND sports teams had been known as the Fighting Sioux since the early 1930s, but the controversial moniker was retired three years ago.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota wildlife officials collected fewer than half of the salmon eggs they wanted from the Missouri River system this year.

That’s because of fewer fish, warm late-fall weather and safety concerns at Garrison Dam.

Eggs are collected so they can be raised at the Riverdale fish hatchery and restocked in the river and Lake Sakakawea.

The lake’s fish population is still recovering from the 2011 Missouri River flood. Game and Fish officials say warm fall weather also wasn’t conducive to salmon spawning.

The Corps of Engineers also is no longer allowing Game and Fish to access the dam’s emergency flood tunnels for safety reasons.

Fisheries Chief Greg Power says the future of salmon fishing in Sakakawea still remains bright. He expects good years in the near future.

In world and national news…

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) – A U.N. official says 27 bodies have been found in the hotel in the capital of Mali that was attacked early Friday by Islamic extremists. The official says 12 bodies were found in the basement and 15 on the second floor. Another U.N. official says two attackers were killed. The officials say the operation isn’t yet over, and security forces are searching for more casualties. An extremist group that split off from al-Qaida two years ago is claiming responsibility.

PARIS (AP) – The French military is seeing a surge in the number of people wanting to join up, since last Friday’s deadly terrorist attacks. An army recruitment spokesman tells a newspaper (Le Monde) that the number of applicants has tripled in the past week. The French army currently has almost 112,000 troops. After last week’s attacks, the country’s president froze plans to cut more than 9,000 troops over the next few years.

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) – A Virginia mayor is apologizing, for comments about the government’s mass detention of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Roanoke Mayor David Bowers had said that the threat to the United States from the Islamic State group is — in his words — “just as real and serious as that from our enemies then.” He now calls his comments “unwise and inappropriate.”

DEER LODGE, Mont. (AP) – Barry Beach has walked out of the Montana State Prison after serving three decades behind bars for a 1979 killing that he long denied. The state’s Democratic governor, Steve Bullock, Friday signed a clemency order allowing his release. Beach will remain on probation for 10 years. He was convicted in the killing of a high school classmate but maintained his confession was coerced.

NEW YORK (AP) – Tony Award-winner Nathan Lane has tied the knot with playwright and producer Devlin Elliott. The actor’s publicist confirmed that the two were married this week in a small ceremony at City Hall in New York. They’ve been together for 18 years.
