In memoriam of CARL ELMER WITTENBERG, 05/04/1920 – 01/02/2016
Carl was born on May 4, 1920 on the family farm at rural Valley City to Robert and Anna (Schmidt) Wittenberg. Carl attended Noltimier School and graduated as salutatorian of his class. Carl worked at Pegg Garage until enlisting in the Navy in March 1942 where he was aboard the USS Heywood and served as an Electrician’s Mate 1C during WWII. After returning home to Valley City he continued to work at Pegg Garage and married Margaret Froelich. They move to a farm near Oriska and raised two children, Dennis and Pamela Lacher. Carl and Margaret retired from farming and lived in Fargo, Mayville and Valley City where he utilized his carpentry skills in refurbishing their homes. Margaret died in November 2006 and Carl moved to Hillsboro to be closer to his daughter Pamela Lacher. In May 2014 Carl entered the Arthur Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Carl passed away January 2, 2016.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister, wife and son, brother in-laws and sister-in laws.
He is survived by daughter Pamela (Craig) Lacher, grandchildren Nick (Kristen) Lacher, Desiree’ Lacher, Brothers Ralph and Robert and Sister Esther (Clyde) Connolly, sister in law- Gloria Wittenberg, Francis Harshman, brother in law John (Sandra) Froelich, Jim (Darlene) Froelich, Darryll Johnson and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial and burial will be held in the spring at the Zion-Getchell cemetery.
