Jamestown ND (CSi) The Arts Mean Business. That is the message being delivered today by the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) and The Jamestown Fine Arts Association, Inc (The Arts Center) who announced they have joined the Arts & Economic Prosperity® 5, a national study measuring the economic impact of nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences.

The research study is being conducted by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s nonprofit organization advancing the arts and arts education. It is the fifth study over the past 20 years to measure the impact of arts spending on local jobs, income paid to local residents, and revenue generated to local and state governments.

While associated with nearly 300 study partners across all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, NDCA and The Arts Center will collect detailed financial data about our local and state nonprofit arts and culture organizations such as theater and dance companies, museums, festivals, and arts education organizations.

The Arts Center, along with other cultural resources in Jamestown will collect surveys from attendees at arts events using a short, anonymous questionnaire that asks how much money they spent on items such as meals, parking and transportation, and retail shopping specifically as a result of attending the event. Previous studies have shown that the average attendee spends $24.60 per person, per event, beyond the cost of admission. Those studies have also shown that, on average, 32 percent of arts attendees travel from outside the county in which the arts event took place, and that those cultural tourists typically spend nearly $40 per person—generating important revenue for local businesses and demonstrating how the arts drive revenue for other businesses in the community.

Surveys will be collected throughout calendar year 2016. The results of the study will be released in June of 2017.

For a full list of the nearly 300 Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 study partners, visit www.AmericansForTheArts.org/AEP5Partners.

The Jamestown Fine Arts Association, Inc has been enriching the Jamestown area community through the arts for over 50 years.

The North Dakota Council on the Arts is the state agency responsible for the support and development of the arts throughout North Dakota, and is funded by the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Jamestown (CSi) Dr. Bruce Chehroudi, chair of the mechanical engineering program at University of Jamestown, recently was an invited speaker at the 2015 R&D 100 Conference.

The conference, widely known as the “Oscars of Invention”, identifies and celebrates the top technology products of the year.

Last year’s winners include the Automotive Phased Array Radar, used to help cars “see”, and the Lunar Laser Communication System, to communicate with a moon satellite almost instantaneously.

Dr. Chehroudi spoke on Research and Development alliances at the conference. “It is increasingly difficult for any single organization to develop internally all the capabilities needed to foster new innovations,” said Dr. Chehroudi, “We observe that in industries with expanding complexities, the innovation trajectories are increasingly found in ‘networks of R&D alliances.'”

Dr. Chehroudi has a PhD in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and has done post-doctorate work at Princeton University related to characterization of the dense intact core region in diesel fuel sprays. He is also in charge of the Management of Research and Development Teams and Organizations seminar sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is currently leading the development of the Mechanical Engineering program at University of Jamestown.

Vice President of Academic Affairs, Paul Olson says, “Dr. Chehroudi’s deep understanding of how innovation happens is one of the characteristics that made us want him to develop our mechanical engineering program. He is truly an industry leader, and his being asked to present at the R&D 100 Conference is illustrative of how highly his peers in industry think of him.”

Washington (CSi) In coordination with the state revenue departments and the tax industry, the Internal Revenue Service today released the first in a series of YouTube video tax tips designed to provide people critical information to help protect their tax and financial data.

The videos, part of the continuing Security Summit effort combating identity theft and refund fraud, is part of an ongoing effort to educate taxpayers and provide them tools to stay safe online.

The first of the Security Awareness YouTube videos <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLPQTkmnEvg>includes tips from four state officials reminding taxpayers to check online accounts for problems, look for secure sites when shopping online and be careful to avoid phishing scams. The videos will be released daily over the next week.

“These are important reminders for all of us to protect ourselves online,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “These videos reflect the continuing collaborative work between the states, the tax industry and the IRS to protect taxpayers. We are jointly implementing major new procedures to protect taxpayers, but people can help by taking some precautionary steps to help us work to prevent identity theft.”

The six videos feature the heads of several state revenue departments from across the country.

The “Taxes. Security. Together.” campaign – a joint effort announced late last year between the IRS, states and the private-sector tax industry — is designed to raise public awareness that even routine actions on the Internet and personal devices can affect the safety of financial and tax data. The education campaign will complement the expanded series of important new protections the IRS, states and tax industry are putting in place for the start of the 2016 filing season to address tax-related identity theft.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota regulators say they will provide written justification if fines and other sanctions are lowered against companies that violate the state’s oil and gas laws.

Department of Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says he was directed by the state Industrial Commission on Monday to provide the documentation.

Regulators have been publicly criticized for easing penalties as much as 90 percent against companies involved in spills and other oilfield violations. Regulators say it promotes cooperation.

The Industrial Commission that includes Gov. Jack Dalrymple met behind doors with attorneys for more than 90 minutes Monday, discussing six cases against companies that are facing sanctions. No action was taken.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot’s Downtown Business and Professional Association has put a hold on a plan to use city economic development dollars to help businesses dealing with disruptions from a three-year infrastructure upgrade project.

Association President Chris Lind  says  the group wants to further discuss the plan with its members to see if any tweaks are necessary.

The Magic Fund screening committee in December endorsed using up to half a million dollars from the fund to pay down interest on debt for affected downtown businesses. But many established businesses with no outstanding loans said they would be left out and that other ideas for aid should be considered.

The City Council now won’t consider the interest buy-down plan until business association officials visit with members.
