Jamestown ND (CSi) The Arts Mean Business. That is the message being delivered today by the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) and The Jamestown Fine Arts Association, Inc (The Arts Center) who announced they have joined the Arts & Economic Prosperity® 5, a national study measuring the economic impact of nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences.

The research study is being conducted by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s nonprofit organization advancing the arts and arts education. It is the fifth study over the past 20 years to measure the impact of arts spending on local jobs, income paid to local residents, and revenue generated to local and state governments.

While associated with nearly 300 study partners across all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, NDCA and The Arts Center will collect detailed financial data about our local and state nonprofit arts and culture organizations such as theater and dance companies, museums, festivals, and arts education organizations.

The Arts Center, along with other cultural resources in Jamestown will collect surveys from attendees at arts events using a short, anonymous questionnaire that asks how much money they spent on items such as meals, parking and transportation, and retail shopping specifically as a result of attending the event. Previous studies have shown that the average attendee spends $24.60 per person, per event, beyond the cost of admission. Those studies have also shown that, on average, 32 percent of arts attendees travel from outside the county in which the arts event took place, and that those cultural tourists typically spend nearly $40 per person—generating important revenue for local businesses and demonstrating how the arts drive revenue for other businesses in the community.

Surveys will be collected throughout calendar year 2016. The results of the study will be released in June of 2017.

For a full list of the nearly 300 Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 study partners, visit www.AmericansForTheArts.org/AEP5Partners.

The Jamestown Fine Arts Association, Inc has been enriching the Jamestown area community through the arts for over 50 years.

The North Dakota Council on the Arts is the state agency responsible for the support and development of the arts throughout North Dakota, and is funded by the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The school is still accepting interested individuals. You can click here to learn more about the Two Rivers Performing Arts School. http://www.tworiversperformingartsschool.com/

Jamestown (CSi) Dr. Bruce Chehroudi, chair of the mechanical engineering program at University of Jamestown, recently was an invited speaker at the 2015 R&D 100 Conference.

The conference, widely known as the “Oscars of Invention”, identifies and celebrates the top technology products of the year.

Last year’s winners include the Automotive Phased Array Radar, used to help cars “see”, and the Lunar Laser Communication System, to communicate with a moon satellite almost instantaneously.

Dr. Chehroudi spoke on Research and Development alliances at the conference. “It is increasingly difficult for any single organization to develop internally all the capabilities needed to foster new innovations,” said Dr. Chehroudi, “We observe that in industries with expanding complexities, the innovation trajectories are increasingly found in ‘networks of R&D alliances.’”

Dr. Chehroudi has a PhD in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and has done post-doctorate work at Princeton University related to characterization of the dense intact core region in diesel fuel sprays. He is also in charge of the Management of Research and Development Teams and Organizations seminar sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is currently leading the development of the Mechanical Engineering program at University of Jamestown.

Vice President of Academic Affairs, Paul Olson says, “Dr. Chehroudi’s deep understanding of how innovation happens is one of the characteristics that made us want him to develop our mechanical engineering program. He is truly an industry leader, and his being asked to present at the R&D 100 Conference is illustrative of how highly his peers in industry think of him.”

Washington (CSi) In coordination with the state revenue departments and the tax industry, the Internal Revenue Service today released the first in a series of YouTube video tax tips designed to provide people critical information to help protect their tax and financial data.

The videos, part of the continuing Security Summit effort combating identity theft and refund fraud, is part of an ongoing effort to educate taxpayers and provide them tools to stay safe online.

The  first of the Security Awareness YouTube videos

includes tips from four state officials reminding taxpayers to check online accounts for problems, look for secure sites when shopping online and be careful to avoid phishing scams. The videos will be released daily over the next week.

“These are important reminders for all of us to protect ourselves online,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “These videos reflect the continuing collaborative work between the states, the tax industry and the IRS to protect taxpayers. We are jointly implementing major new procedures to protect taxpayers, but people can help by taking some precautionary steps to help us work to prevent identity theft.”

The six videos feature the heads of several state revenue departments from across the country. The “Taxes. Security. Together.” campaign – a joint effort announced late last year between the IRS, states and the private-sector tax industry — is designed to raise public awareness that even routine actions on the Internet and personal devices can affect the safety of financial and tax data. The education campaign will complement the expanded series of important new protections the IRS, states and tax industry are putting in place for the start of the 2016 filing season to address tax-related identity theft.

To learn about additional steps you can take to protect your personal and financial data, visit www.irs.gov/taxessecuritytogether or www.irs.gov/identitytheft.

The Highway Patrol says the two were on a snowmobile that crashed and rolled in a farm field about 4 miles northwest of Hatton Sunday afternoon. The crash killed 10-year-old Mason Moen of Thompson. Nine-year-old Brody Johnson of Hatton was flown to a Fargo hospital with what the patrol says are serious injuries.

Authorities haven’t determined which boy was driving the snowmobile.

Jury selection began Monday in the murder trial of 39-year-old Anthony Campbell. He’s accused of killing 25-year-old Shannon Brunelle, who was found dead in a garage at an apartment building on Sept. 15, 2014.

Campbell was arrested in Philadelphia after a nine-week search, and earlier pleaded not guilty.

Authorities have said Brunelle was an acquaintance of Campbell. Court documents in the case have been sealed to the public.

Campbell could face life in prison without parole if convicted. The trial is expected to take two weeks.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police in Minot say several area businesses and banks have reported finding counterfeit $100 bills being passed in the city.

Aaron Moss of the department’s Crime Prevention Unit is asking that businesses finding suspicious bills take note of the suspect’s physical description and any other identifying information. The unit is also asking for vehicle descriptions and license plates

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Williston police detective says one person has died and eight others have been treated for overdosing on heroin over a six-day period beginning Jan. 4.

Detective Amy Nickoloff  says  the overdoses included eight men and one woman, ranging in age from 25 to 45. The death was a man around 30 years old. The others were treated and released.

Nickoloff says the 9 overdoses are not all connected at this point and happened in different areas of Williston.

The Williston Drug Task Force and BCI are now helping Williston police investigate.

Nickoloff says the rapid increase in heroin use is of high concern. She says the overdoses are of high priority to the department.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state-owned Bank of North Dakota had record net income of nearly $131 million last year, giving it the profits it needs to build a financial services campus in Bismarck.

The bank’s 2015 income was up nearly 18 percent over 2014, and more than $15 million higher than was budgeted. Bank President Eric Hardmeyer says it was the 12th straight year for record profits.

The Legislature last year approved investing bank assets in a $17 million campus at the bank’s site in west Bismarck, provided it made $125 million in profits. Hardmeyer says planning already is underway.

The bank bought two parcels of land next to its new location near the Missouri River in 2011 with the intention of creating the 50,000-square-foot campus.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State officials this week are deciding who gets to take part in a program this year to test whether industrial hemp could be a viable crop in North Dakota.

Seventeen producers applied and 11 of the applications were deemed eligible. An advisory committee on Monday identified its top choices. Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring will make the final decisions.

North Dakota issued the nation’s first hemp-growing licenses in 2007 but efforts to establish the industry in the state were hampered by federal drug law, which doesn’t differentiate between hemp and its illegal cousin marijuana.

A provision in the 2014 federal farm bill allowed for universities and state agriculture departments to research hemp in states that permit its cultivation. A bill pending in Congress would go further, separating industrial hemp and marijuana.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A lawyer and a state chamber of commerce vice president says he is running for North Dakota insurance commissioner.

Jon Godfread says he will make a formal announcement on Wednesday.

Godfread is a Republican. He is vying for the seat being vacated by Adam Hamm, who announced in December that he will not seek re-election in 2016. Democrats do not have a declared candidate for the position.

Godfread was born in Bismarck but grew up in Grand Forks. He has a law degree from the University of North Dakota.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota University System is giving out its first scholarship for a new program meant to help people in the oil patch further their educations.

Bakken U is tailored to help oilfield workers earn a degree or certificate from one of five colleges and universities in western North Dakota with energy-related and high-tech degree programs.

The $5,000 scholarship is open to recently displaced oil workers, current oil workers, or spouses of oil workers who wish to expand their knowledge and job marketability in North Dakota.

The winner was selected based on a review from a scholarship committee.

A news conference is scheduled Tuesday to announce the recipient, who is currently enrolled at Dickinson State University.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Sunflower farmers are gathering in North Dakota for an annual conference.

T25-MEN’S BASKETBALL POLL…

UNDATED (AP) – Last Monday Kansas and Oklahoma were tagged as 1 and 2 in The Associated Press Top-25 poll. They then hooked up in a classic triple overtime game which the top-ranked Jayhawks won. In the new poll, the teams have remained in the same spots with Kansas getting all but two first-place votes from the 65-member media panel.

The Jayhawks, who are 14-1, are followed by the Sooners, who got one first place vote, while Maryland is third and Michigan State fourth. The Spartans got the remaining first place nod. North Carolina is fifth followed by Villanova, Xavier, Miami, Duke and SMU.

SMU is in the top 10 for the first time since February 1985. The Mustangs and No. 19 South Carolina are each 15-0 on the season. SMU is ineligible for the postseason because of NCAA rules violations.

T25-WOMEN’S POLL

Huskies are still No. 1

UNDATED (AP) – After winning three games last week, all by double-digits, Connecticut remains No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s poll. The Huskies beat Tulsa, Houston and South Florida to remain undefeated. They are followed by South Carolina, Notre Dame, Texas and Ohio State in the new poll.

NFL…

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) – Blair Walsh is taking determination and belief in the goodness of people into the offseason along with the bitter disappointment of that missed kick. Walsh missed a 27-yard field goal try Sunday and cost Minnesota a win over Seattle in the wild-card playoff game. Walsh says he’s been appreciative of the supportive words shared with him from family, friends, teammates and Vikings fans.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Vikings-Seahawks playoff matchup is the most-watched early Sunday NFL wild-card game on record. NBC says the game averaged 35.3 million viewers, up 25 percent from last year’s matchup between Cincinnati and Indianapolis. The records go back to 1988.

CINCINNATI (AP) – Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict (vahn-TEHZ’ BUR’-fihct) has been suspended for the first three games of next season for repeated violations of the NFL’s rules against dangerous hits on opposing players.

The punishment has been doled out two days after he drilled Steelers receiver Antonio Brown after an incompletion during Pittsburgh’s 18-16 playoff win. Brown suffered a concussion on the play, and Burfict was penalized for targeting a defenseless receiver.

The NFL said it’s also reviewing the conduct of other players and coaches during the acrimonious game.

UNDATED (AP) – NFL owners are poised to start two days of meetings Tuesday in Houston to consider relocation to Los Angeles.

The Raiders, Rams and Chargers have petitioned the league to leave their current homes for the nation’s second largest market, which has been without an NFL team since 1994.

Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) has indicated the stadiums in Oakland, St. Louis and San Diego are all inadequate.

Twenty-four of 32 owners must approve any move.

UNDATED (AP) – Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith has announced that he will skip his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft. He was projected by some to be a possible top 10 pick before suffering a serious injury to his left knee in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – With ambitious proposals largely off the table in the Republican-run Congress, President Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address is expected to be an optimistic and broad vision of a future America. But Obama still faces pessimism on the part of Americans, most of whom disagree with the country’s direction amid worries over terrorism and what they see as rapid social change.

ISTANBUL (AP) – The European Union is rallying behind Turkey following an explosion in the heart of Istanbul that killed at least 10 people and wounded 15. Turkey’s president says a Syrian-based suicide bomber is responsible for the attack in a historic district popular with tourists. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini (feh-deh-REE’-kah moh-gehr-EE’-nee) says both sides “must step up our efforts to counter extremist violence.”

LONDON (AP) – As concern mounts over radicalized youth traveling to Syria to connect with militant organizations like the Islamic State group, British counter-terrorism police say they are even more worried over the increasing number of girls and women making the trip. Authorities say many have no clue that they will likely never be able to return home. Police released a short film featuring three female Syrian refugees urging British mothers to keep their daughters out of the war zone.

LONDON (AP) – The falling price of crude oil is having an impact on BP. The oil company is cutting some 4,000 jobs in exploration and production over the next two years. The cost-cutting announced today comes as the price of oil dropped to a 12 year-low. Part of the decline is due to concern over a drop in demand in China, which is depressing commodity prices worldwide.

NORTHFIELD, Ohio (AP) – A family dog is the only survivor of a house explosion that shook a northeast Ohio neighborhood, killing a family of four, including two girls, aged 8 and12. The blast and subsequent fire happened last night in Northfield Center Township, near the village of Northfield in Summit County, about 15 miles southeast of Cleveland.
