Jamestown (CSi) The University of Jamestown is the best college in North Dakota according to a recent Business Insider article, “The best college in every state.”

Business Insider referenced the rankings from Niche.com, a site that gathers information on about 1,700 public and private institutions nationally, including MIT, Ohio State, and NYU. The data is taken from the U.S. Department of Education, student surveys, and other public sources.

A UJ junior’s quote from Niche is highlighted in the ranking. “You can be in as little or as much as you want. We’re a pretty involved campus. The education is top-notch and the professors genuinely care about you, whether you are in their department or not. Our student activities department rocks. There’s always an event going on.”

The ranking process takes many institutional aspects into account with academics, professors, student surveys, athletics, value, student life, and safety making up over 80% of the ranking value.

UJ President, Bob Badal says, “Rankings do play a role in the higher education market,” and the University of Jamestown has always been proud to be at the top among the ranked ND institutions in the US News rankings; now we find ourselves as the #1 ranked school in North Dakota according to an MSN featured article. We are proud to own it and to live it out every day working with our faculty and students.”

The University of Jamestown was established in 1883 and is ranked as a top tier regional school in US News and World Report and a top Midwestern school in The Princeton Review. The school features development of the whole person through its distinctive Journey to Success experience.

Jamestown (CSi ) The Jamestown community is invited to take part in another “Strides for Change,” walking program.

The activity starts Monday, January 18, 2016, and runs through Friday, April 29th, Monday-Wednesday-Friday at James River Family Fitness (Formerly the James River YMCA) indoor walking track, from 1-p.m., to 1:50-p.m.

On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, University of Jamestown, Foss Wellness Center, Program Director, and Kinesiology Instructor Madeline Ranum was joined by University of Jamestown senior soccer player Bailey Borass, who is majoring in Exercise Science.

Madeline said that Strides for Change is an eight week exercise program, designed to instill a healthy life style for individuals in the community.

Madeline said with new years’ resolutions popular this time of year, many people are looking at gym memberships, new equipment, etc. to help them get in shape. But studies show that none of that is required for better health. An activity as simple as walking can drastically improve health in several ways. Some of the major ways walking plays a role in health:

1) Counteracts the damage caused by sitting

2) Protects your heart

3) Helps maintain a healthy weight

Guidelines set forth by The AHA, CDC, and ACSM recommend a MINIMUM of 150 min. of moderate intensity aerobic exercise (ex: brisk walking) weekly to MAINTAIN health. That’s 30 min. 5 days a week.

Studies show that less than 30% of Americans are achieving these recommended guidelines.

The purpose of the program is to help improve those figures by providing an opportunity to make it easier for people in thecommunity to meet those guidelines.

Bailey added that the program is under the close supervision of UJ exercise science students who are there to walk and talk with every step of the way.

Included is Heart rate & Blood Pressure monitoring, provided throughout the sessions to make you sure participants are exercising at an effective yet safe intensity

The activity is safe in a social environment to stay motivated by meeting others with similar fitness goals

The cost is $20, free with JRFF membership

Or $10 if referred by a JRFF member

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and good pair of tennis shoes.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – A two-vehicle crash on a frosty highway in the western North Dakota oil patch has killed a man from Idaho.

The Highway Patrol says the 26-year-old man from Wendell, Idaho, lost control of the car he was driving on U.S. Highway 85 in McKenzie County about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The man’s car drifted into the wrong lane and was struck by an oncoming pickup truck.

The 45-year-old Tioga man driving the pickup truck suffered undisclosed injuries.

The patrol did not immediately identify either man.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Heroin that killed one person and sent eight others to the hospital in Williston might have been laced with another drug or ingredient that caused unconsciousness.

Police Lt. Detective David Peterson says several of the overdoses that occurred over a six-day period this month are connected.

He says police are working with state lab officials to test whether the drug was more potent, or if it was mixed with an unknown drug.

The man who died was 30 years old. The others who overdosed ranged in age from 25 to 45. They all have since been released from the hospital.

Peterson says the heroin supply in Williston is coming from southern parts of the U.S., including the Texas-Mexico border area, Arizona and California.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota farmers last year grew more corn, potatoes and sugar beets but less soybeans.

The Agriculture Department says in its row crop production summary that the state’s corn crop in 2015 was up 4 percent from the previous year, sugar beets were up 13 percent and potatoes were up 14 percent.

The soybean crop was down 8 percent from the 2014 record.

Other row crops that saw production increases in North Dakota last year were sunflowers, canola, flaxseed, dry peas, dry beans, lentils and safflower. Alfalfa hay production was down.

WASHBURN, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol is bringing its “Trooper on a Bus” campaign to the Washburn area.

The program aims to boost safety around school buses. Troopers riding on buses observe traffic violations that occur around the buses and radio the information to officers in squad cars who make traffic stops.

Failing to stop for a school bus can result in a $100 fine for both the driver and the registered owner of the vehicle.

The Washburn campaign was scheduled Wednesday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota legislative committee is reviewing the state’s economic development tax incentives to determine their relevance.

The Legislature’s interim Political Subdivision Taxation Committee began the review process on Wednesday. Twenty-one of the state’s 34 tax incentive programs are being evaluated for their effectiveness.

Committee chairman and Bismarck Republican Rep. Jason Dockter says the goal is to ensure the state is getting its “bang for the buck” with the incentives, such as creating jobs and businesses.  He says legislation will be crafted to cut the incentives that are found to be ineffective.

Dockter says it’s the first time the incentives have come under legislative review. He says it’s important to evaluate the programs as the state looks at “tight budgets” due to declining oil tax revenues.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Republican members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation say President Barack Obama needs to do more to work with Congress.

Obama gave his final State of the Union speech Tuesday night, using it to summon an affirmative vision of his administration and for the future.

Republican North Dakota Congressman Kevin Cramer called the speech a “liberal pep rally,” and GOP Sen. John Hoeven said Obama needs to work with Congress “on initiatives that empower the American people.”

Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp said Obama called on the nation to look ahead “and work together as North Dakotans do.”

And he’s announced that a special commando force has now arrived in Iraq. Speaking to troops from the 101st Airborne Division in Kentucky who will soon deploy to Iraq, Carter also said he would meet in Paris next week with his defense counterparts, mainly from Europe, and will challenge them to do more to fight the Islamic State.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) – Jeb Bush says he misjudged the intensity of anger among Republican voters before his White House campaign. He says the country in 2016 is “dramatically different” than in past elections. But in an interview with The Associated Press, the former Florida governor insists he’s still a viable candidate. And he says he’s broadened his mission in 2016 to include defending conservativism from GOP front-runner Donald Trump.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California prison officials say former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips has been found dead in his prison cell, and they suspect suicide. Guards found the 40-year-old Phillips unresponsive in his cell shortly after midnight. He had been in segregation since April 2013 after he was suspected of killing his cellmate. Phillips played for the St. Louis Rams before being released in 1997. He also played for the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers. He was convicted of choking his girlfriend and driving his car into three teens in 2005.

NORTHFIELD, Ohio (AP) – Investigators say an Ohio house fire and explosion that killed a family of four was arson. The state fire marshal’s office says investigators have determined what caused the fire in Northfield Center Township, but they aren’t releasing details while the investigation is underway. Authorities say Jeffrey and Cynthia Mather were killed, along with their 8- and 12-year-old daughters. Neighbors say Monday night’s explosion shook homes throughout their development.

DUNKIRK, N.Y. (AP) – A fast-moving storm and lake-effect snow have led to school closings and travel troubles in the Northeast. The latest round of lake-effect storms dumped up to 18 inches near Lake Erie’s eastern shore. Blowing snow closed a nearly 60-mile stretch of the westbound lanes of the New York Thruway south of Buffalo today. Meanwhile, scores of business and government closings and delays were in effect across northern New England after the fast-moving system dumped more than a foot of snow.
