Jamestown (CSi) First views were seen Wednesday, as the Jamestown City Park Board, approved the updated design of the Two Rivers Activity Center (TRAC)
The footprint is reduced in size from the original plan but includes space for planned programs.
After an extensive analysis of projected construction costs. McGough’s construction estimate for the original design exceeded the architect’s estimated cost by $8 million.
Originally the design called for the main fitness building to have 103,156 square feet of space and the indoor turf field air structure to have 59,000 square feet for a total of 162,156 square feet.
Brian Berg, principal architect for Zerr Berg, said by moving the cardio and workout class space to the mezzanine, or upper level of the main building, and moving most of the mechanical equipment for the main building’s heating and cooling systems to the roof, the main building’s size was reduced by 8,191 square feet to 94,965 square feet.
Berg said the best thing about the redesign is that there is no effect on the programming that will be offered at TRAC once it opens in late August or early September 2017.
Between October and last week, Zerr Berg Architects and McGough worked with the TRAC Committee to redesign the main fitness building and indoor turf air structure to reduce the cost for phase one of TRAC to the $28.1 million that Jamestown Parks and Recreation will have to spend after the bond insurance costs.
In June of 2015, voters approved a $28.6 million bond to be repaid by a 1 percent sales tax in Jamestown to fund phase one of TRAC.
A private fundraising campaign is underway to finance phase 2 of the project.

The activity starts Monday, January 18, 2016, and runs through Friday, April 29th, Monday-Wednesday-Friday at James River Family Fitness (Formerly the James River YMCA) indoor walking track, from 1-p.m., to 1:50-p.m.
On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, University of Jamestown, Foss Wellness Center, Program Director, and Kinesiology Instructor Madeline Ranum was joined by University of Jamestown senior soccer player Bailey Borass, who is majoring in Exercise Science.
Madeline said that Strides for Change is an eight week exercise program, designed to instill a healthy life style for individuals in the community.
Madeline said with new years’ resolutions popular this time of year, many people are looking at gym memberships, new equipment, etc. to help them get in shape. But studies show that none of that is required for better health. An activity as simple as walking can drastically improve health in several ways. Some of the major ways walking plays a role in health:
1) Counteracts the damage caused by sitting
2) Protects your heart
3) Helps maintain a healthy weight
Guidelines set forth by The AHA, CDC, and ACSM recommend a MINIMUM of 150 min. of moderate intensity aerobic exercise (ex: brisk walking) weekly to MAINTAIN health. That’s 30 min. 5 days a week.
Studies show that less than 30% of Americans are achieving these recommended guidelines.
The purpose of the program is to help improve those figures by providing an opportunity to make it easier for people in thecommunity to meet those guidelines.
Bailey added that the program is under the close supervision of UJ exercise science students who are there to walk and talk with every step of the way.
Included is Heart rate & Blood Pressure monitoring, provided throughout the sessions to make you sure participants are exercising at an effective yet safe intensity
The activity is safe in a social environment to stay motivated by meeting others with similar fitness goals

Business Insider referenced the rankings from Niche.com, a site that gathers information on about 1,700 public and private institutions nationally, including MIT, Ohio State, and NYU. The data is taken from the U.S. Department of Education, student surveys, and other public sources.
A UJ junior’s quote from Niche is highlighted in the ranking. “You can be in as little or as much as you want. We’re a pretty involved campus. WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – A two-vehicle crash on a frosty highway in the western North Dakota oil patch has killed a man from Idaho.
The Highway Patrol says 26-year-old Ethan Connell from Wendell, Idaho, lost control of the Dodge Neon he was driving on U.S. Highway 85 in McKenzie County about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. His car drifted into the wrong lane and was struck by an oncoming pickup truck.
45-year-old Michael Nobles of Tioga driving a Chevy 2500 pickup truck suffered undisclosed injuries.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Minot family is celebrating a belated Christmas after being reunited with missing gifts.
The gifts fell from the vehicle of the Deanna and Alex Wojtczak family as they were traveling to Wyoming in December.
A state Transportation Department worker discovered the presents in a ditch along U.S. Highway 2 between Minot and Berthold two days before Christmas. The agency earlier this month asked the public for help in finding the owners.
Deanna Wojtczak says she was heartbroken for her two daughters when she discovered on Christmas Eve that the gifts were missing. She says getting the presents back “made me ecstatic.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota legislative committee is reviewing the state’s economic development tax incentives to determine their relevance.
The Legislature’s interim Political Subdivision Taxation Committee began the review process on Wednesday. Twenty-one of the state’s 34 tax incentive programs are being evaluated for their effectiveness.
Committee chairman and Bismarck Republican Rep. Jason Dockter says the goal is to ensure the state is getting its “bang for the buck” with the incentives, such as creating jobs and businesses. He says legislation will be crafted to cut the incentives that are found to be ineffective.
Dockter says it’s the first time the incentives have come under legislative review. He says it’s important to evaluate the programs as the state looks at “tight budgets” due to declining oil tax revenues.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The city of Williston is cracking down on downtown strip clubs.
City commissioners have given initial approval to ordinances restricting all exotic dancing to industrial zones, on the city’s outer fringe. Strip clubs also would be prohibited from serving alcohol and would have to obtain a cabaret license.
The city in 2011 began requiring adult entertainment venues to move to industrial zones, but the Heartbreakers and Whispers clubs downtown were grandfathered in at their current locations. Under the new ordinances, they can remain there only if they operate solely as bars.
In 2014, one club was the scene of a fatal beating and the other was the site of a fatal shooting. Both clubs have had their liquor licenses suspended in the past because of disturbances.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge has thrown out a civil complaint by a rural Lakota man who accused authorities of using excessive force. Rodney Brossart filed the suit against the Nelson County sheriff and deputy sheriff at the time of the June 2011 incident. The situation escalated after authorities were investigating a report that Brossart was holding cattle that didn’t belong to him.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the Langdon city commission violated state open meetings laws during two of its regular sessions in 2015.
Stenehjem says the commission started a meeting on May 26 an hour earlier than normal to accommodate the schedule of a consultant. The move was made without posting notice, as required by law.
At the commission’s regular meeting on June 8, the commission entered into an executive session to consult with its attorney on property tax assessments, and then voted on how to move forward on the assessments. Stenehjem says the commission did not follow the proper procedure prior to closing the meeting and should not have taken final action at that point.
The commission was ordered to provide detailed minutes of both meetings.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Lignite production in North Dakota in 2015 equaled the year prior but was slightly below the long-term average.
The Lignite Energy Council says the state’s four large lignite mines produced 28.7 million tons of coal in 2015 and equal to the amount in 2014. The group says the total in each of the two past years was about 1 million more ton that in 2013.
The group says production has been near 30 million tons since 1988, making North Dakota one of the 10 major coal-producing states in the nation.
The four large mines are the Freedom, Falkirk, Center and Beulah mines. Most of the lignite mined last year was used to create electricity. Smaller amounts were used to produce synthetic natural gas and fertilizer products.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A longtime football coach, a former major leaguer and twin hockey-playing sisters are being inducted into the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame.
A banquet will be held to honor Hank Biesiot, Travis Hafner and Jocelyn and Monique Lamoureux on June 11.
Biesiot was a standout baseball and football player at Mayville State University. After taking over as head football coach at Dickinson State University in 1975, he lead his teams to 17 conference titles.
Hafner, a Jamestown native, enjoyed a 12-year career in the majors, mostly with the Cleveland Indians. He’s a lifetime .273 hitter, and his .659 slugging percentage was tops in 2006.
Twin sisters Jocelyn and Monique Lamoureux excelled at UND, leading the squad to 20 wins in each of their three seasons in Grand Forks.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota has received 16 proposals to design a logo for the school’s new Fighting Hawks nickname.
UND spokesman Peter Johnson says a committee is scheduled to start reviewing the proposals on Friday. The group eventually will send a recommendation to interim UND President Ed Schafer for approval.
The Grand Forks school adopted the predatory bird mascot last November to replace the Fighting Sioux nickname that had been deemed offensive by the NCAA and retired.

Valley City (CSi) Valley City State University ended a five game losing streak to the University of Jamestown with a 75-69 win on Tuesday night in men’s basketball.
VCSU (15-4 overall, 4-0 NSAA) led 39-34 at halftime. Jamestown (9-6 overall, 1-1 NSAA) would tie an eventually take the lead midway thru the second half.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Kory Brown set career-highs with 21 points and 15 rebounds as North Dakota State held on to beat South Dakota 66-65 on Wednesday night. A.J. Jacobsen hit two free throws to give North Dakota State a 66-60 cushion with 2:48 left. An Austin Sparks jumper and free throw spurred a 5-0 South Dakota scoring spurt which cut the Bison lead to one with 22 seconds left. The Coyotes had a final possession to win it but Shy McClelland missed a jumper with three seconds left.

HOUSTON (AP) – James Harden had 27 points and 11 assists as the Houston Rockets nabbed a 107-104 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night. Minnesota lost its season-worst eighth in a row. Andrew Wiggins had 28 points for the Timberwolves.

BLAINE, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh plans to visit the first-graders who sent him letters and drawings of support after he was lambasted by fans for missing a field goal that could have given his team a win in Sunday’s playoff game.
Teacher Judie Offerdahl at Northpoint Elementary in Blaine used Walsh’s miss as a teachable moment in empathy. The first-graders grabbed their magic markers and offered sympathy.
“Dear Blair Walsh,” one wrote. “I know it can be hard to get through things that are sad, but you have to try and try again. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes.”
Walsh was harangued on social media following the 10-9 loss to Seattle. Some fans invited him to leave the state – and worse.
The Vikings say Walsh will visit the first-graders Thursday morning.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – The New York Giants are staying within the organization for the successor to coach Tom Coughlin (KAWF’-lihn). A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press the Giants are hiring 38-year-old offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo as their next head coach.
The Cleveland Browns have hired Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson as their new coach. The 50-year old replaces the fired Mike Pettine (PET’-ihn), who was let go after two losing seasons.
Jackson becomes the eighth coach for the team since it re-entered the NFL as an expansion club in 1999.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL…
HOUSTON (AP) – Clemson’s Dabo (DAH’-boh) Swinney has won the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year award.
Swinney is the first ACC coach to be honored with the trophy named for the late Alabama coach.
Clemson was undefeated until losing to Alabama 45-40 Monday night in the national championship game. The Tigers finished 14-1.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Defending champions and No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) and Serena Williams top the Australian Open seedings, which follow rankings ahead of the first Grand Slam tournament of 2016. Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka moved back into the top 16 with her victory at the Brisbane International last week, her first title since 2013.

HONOLULU (AP) – The first full-field event of the PGA Tour golf season, the Sony Open, starts today at Honolulu. Jimmy Walker is trying to win this for the third straight year and the field also includes Adam Scott, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur) and Kevin Kisner from the top 20.
OBIT-LAWRENCE PHILLIPS…
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Former Nebraska star running back Lawrence Phillips has been found dead in his California prison cell and officials say they suspect suicide.
Guards at Kern Valley State Prison found the 40-year old unresponsive in his cell.
He had been housed alone in a segregation cell since April 2015 after he was suspected of killing his cellmate.
Phillips was a former No. 1 draft pick of the before his NFL career was cut short by disciplinary problems.
Phillips went to prison in 2008 to serve a sentence of more than 31 years after he was convicted of twice choking his girlfriend in 2005 and of driving his car into three teens later that year.
OBIT-LUIS ARROYO…
NEW YORK (AP) – Former All-Star pitcher Luis Arroyo (uh-ROY’-yoh) has died. He was 88.
The New York Yankees say Arroyo’s daughter, Milagros, told the team Wednesday night that he had died earlier in the day in Puerto Rico. She said he had been diagnosed last month with cancer.
Arroyo helped pitch the Yankees to the 1961 World Series championship. The 5-foot-8 lefty was 15-5 with a major league-leading 29 saves that season, then earned another victory in the Series against Cincinnati.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – In wednesday’s drawing, Florida lottery officials say the winning ticket in the record Powerball jackpot for that state was sold at a grocery store in Melbourne Beach.
The ticket – one of three winning tickets that will share in the $1.6 billion jackpot – was sold at a Publix grocery store in coastal Florida.
The two other winning tickets were sold in Chino Hills, California; and Munford, Tennessee.
The winners will share the $1.6 billion jackpot
The winning numbers in Wednesday night’s drawing are 4-8-19-27-34 and Powerball 10.
The winners can opt for annual payments over decades or a lump-sum payment.
None of the winners’ identities have yet been revealed.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) – Indonesia’s national police say the five people who carried out a terror attack in Jakarta, Indonesia, today were affiliated with the Islamic State group. A news agency affiliated with IS said the attack targeted “foreigners and the security forces tasked with protecting them.” Video shows one of the bombs going off in front of a Starbucks cafe. Then there was shooting. Police say all five attackers and two civilians were killed. Another 19 people were injured.
WASHINGTON (AP) – A smaller cast of Republican presidential candidates returns to the debate stage tonight in South Carolina. It’ll be one of the last high-profile opportunities for the White House hopefuls to sway voters before the Feb. 1 Iowa caucus. Not taking part in the main event will be Carly Fiorina and Rand Paul, who’ve failed to place in the top six in an average of recent national polls.
CHICAGO (AP) – A federal judge is expected to decide today whether to allow the release of a video that shows a white Chicago police officer fatally shooting a black suspect in a car theft in 2013. The hearing comes a day after the city made a surprise about-face and dropped its opposition to making the footage public. An officer killed 17-year-old Cedrick Chatman during a foot chase. Chatman’s family is suing the city and asked that the video from a high school security camera be made public.
MOSCOW (AP) – Russian aviation officials say they’ve uncovered new evidence about the 2014 downing of a Malaysian jet over eastern Ukraine. They’re asking Dutch investigators to look into the findings. The Dutch Safety Board concluded that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was destroyed by a Soviet-made surface-to-air missile. But Moscow has been anxious to deflect suspicion from the rebels it’s backing in eastern Ukraine who said before the crash that they had this type of missile.
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) – Gambia’s government says it has lifted a recent directive stating that all women working for the government must cover their hair during office hours. In early December, Gambian President Yahya Jammeh had issued the memo urging female staff to use head ties and wrap their hair because he say Islam is the religion of the majority of its citizens. The directive sparked resistance from opposition leaders, activists and pro-democracy groups.
