Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Fire Department responded to a report of smoke after a cooking fire at about 11 p.m. Monday, at 156 Sunnyside Trailer Court.
Lt. Sheldon Mohr said the units set up fans to extract smoke after the cooking fire in the oven had been extinguished by the residents.
Damage was confined to smoke.
Four city fire units and 26 fire fighters were on the scene about a half hour.
LAMOURE, N.D. (AP- CSi) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol has released the names of the victims in a one vehicle head-on collision Friday morning at 3:15, in LaMoure.
The Highway Patrol says a pickup truck operated by 20 year old Roddy Gentzkow, Jr., of LaMoure, was traveling at a high speed went off a street and struck a tree about 3:15 a.m. Friday, in the 400 block of 1st St NE., in LaMoure.
The passenger, 25 year old Joshua Dahlen of LaMoure was pronounced dead at the Oakes hospital. Gentzkow was injured, also taken to the Oakes Hospital by LaMoure Ambulance, and arrested for driving under the influence.
The crash remains under investigation by the NDHP.
Assisting at the scene were: The LaMoure County Sheriff’s Office, LaMoure Fire Department, LaMoure Ambulance, and the LaMoure Police Department.
Valley City (CSi) Valley City officials have approved the language in a petition that allows a sponsoring committee to gather signatures to disband the Valley City Police Department.
City Auditor Avis Richter says the sponsoring committee needs to gather 465 valid signatures from Valley City residents before the proposed initiated city ordinance petition can be presented to the city commission for their approval to set up a citywide vote.
If the petition signatures are certified and approved by the City Commission, Valley City residents would vote to approve, or turn down, establishing a city Ordinance to revert the responsibilities of the Valley City Police Department to the Barnes County Sheriff.
The petition sponsoring committee includes Tony Drake, Lloyd Nelson and Bob Drake,
The city stopped its search for a new police chief due to the unknown outcome of this proposed petition.
Police Chief Fred Thompson will remain on the job until further notice. Last year he said he would resign to spend more time with his family in Nevada.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Public School Board, Monday, received preliminary figures for a new bus contract that would cost around $100,000 more than the previous year.
Dietrich & Sons Inc., General Manager, Brian Yanish said the Valley City-based bus company is due to complete its six-year contract with Jamestown Public Schools in May.
He said that Dietrich & Sons bills on a rate-per-mile basis which was no longer working.
The flat-rate contract amounts to roughly a $2,000 per route annual increase, with the biggest change in the city routes that are currently half the price of of the rural routes. It also accounts for increases in driver training, safety and administering to sudden changes in routes.
Superintendent Rob Lech said that “Right now this is just information without a recommendation.”
School Board Vice President Heidi Larson recommended setting up a task force to study the proposal. Yanish agreed to submit a side-by-side comparison of both types of contracts to compare actual costs.
In other business, the School Board recognized former School Resource Officer Nick Hardy, now a detective at Jamestown Police Department. Hardy introduced JPD officer Andrew Staska, who will assume the school resource officer duties in February.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Authorities in western North Dakota are searching for a man they believe shot another man during an argument early Saturday morning.
The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Department says 33-year-old Kyle Fuchs is wanted for aggravated assault for allegedly shooting a man in the hip with a handgun. He has not been charged.
The victim told authorities at the hospital that Fuchs shot him at a house south of Watford City.
Fuchs is described as a 6-foot tall white man who weighs about 180 pounds and has blue eyes and chin-length brown hair.
Fuchs drives a dark blue Ford pickup with tinted windows and a cream-colored hood or stripe. His license plate is MK570, but the state is unknown.
He could be armed and is considered dangerous.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Minot man is being held in the Ward County Jail after authorities say he assaulted his fiancée and held her against her will.
The man is accused of physically assaulting his fiancée on Saturday morning. Police say he then held her in a basement, refusing to let her leave.
The man is being charged with felonious restraint, a Class C felony, and simple assault, a Class B misdemeanor.
The woman was treated for her injuries at Trinity Hospital in Minot.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A dryer fire prompted the evacuation of a Fargo hotel.
Fire Department Battalion Chief Lee Soeth says smoke from the Monday morning fire was limited to the first floor of the Expressway Suites, but guests were evacuated for about 20 minutes as a precaution.
The small fire set off one sprinkler that quickly extinguished the flames. No injuries were reported. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Insurance Reserve Fund will pay $142,500 to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit against the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Three men claimed they were injured when Deputies Dan Wise and Steve Gjerdevig used excessive force during a traffic stop in Abercrombie in August 2011. Authorities maintained the officers did nothing wrong.
KFGO radio learned of the settlement through an open records request. Settlement terms call for Christopher Miranowski to receive more than $76,000, and Derek Grund and Adam Nelson to each receive $15,000. They’ll share an additional $36,000 for medical costs.
The settlement says the payments are not an admission of liability.
The three men initially were seeking unspecified damages to be determined by a jury.
The state Insurance Reserve Fund handles claims against local governments.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – One of five men charged in the robbery of a Fargo restaurant that left one employee injured from a gunshot wound says he will plead guilty.
Calvin Brown is charged in federal court with three counts, including discharging a firearm in a violent crime, a charge that carries a mandatory 10-year prison sentence.
Authorities say Calvin Brown drove the getaway car during the September robbery at Taco John’s. Another suspect allegedly shot an employee in the leg when the worker did not immediately hand over money.
The robbery came during a rash of armed holdups in the Fargo area and was recently moved to federal court. The Hobbs Act allows for federal prosecution if the crime involves interstate commerce.
Brown’s attorney, Charles Sheeley, declined to comment.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A weak Canadian dollar is worrying some businesses south of the international border.
A Canadian dollar is now worth only 69 cents in the U.S. Bank of Canada says it’s the lowest exchange rate in nearly 13 years.
That’s a concern in cities like Minot where Canadian tourism helps drive the local economy.
The local visitor bureau is working with hotels and event coordinators to try to create more attractions for tourists. Businesses like the Hyatt House are trying to offset the exchange rate with discounts and added services.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Stocks of all small grains in North Dakota were up from the previous year as last year drew to a close.
The Agriculture Department’s latest report shows all wheat stocks on Dec. 1, 2015, up 7 percent, durum stocks up 42 percent, oat stocks up 15 percent and barley stocks up 66 percent.
Soybean stocks also were up, at 13 percent higher, but corn stocks were down slightly. Hay stocks in North Dakota were 6 percent lower.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota-based Knife River Corp. has been awarded a $63.4 million contract to reconstruct a portion of Interstate 29 in Sioux City, Iowa.
It’s the largest contract ever for Knife River, a subsidiary of MDU Resources Group Inc. The two-year project will begin this spring, with completion planned for fall 2017.
Knife River will be the general contractor and also will supply the concrete, asphalt and other materials for the 2.5-mile project.

DETROIT (AP) – A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press the Tigers have agreed to a six-year, $132.75 million contract with free-agent outfielder Justin Upton. The deal is pending a physical, and Upton can opt out after two seasons. Upton hit .251 with 26 home runs and 81 RBIs for the San Diego Padres last season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers have held their first meeting to discuss sharing a stadium that is under construction in Inglewood. NFL owners approved the Rams’ move from St. Louis and the Chargers’ option to leave San Diego at a meeting last week.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Panthers coach Ron Rivera says defensive end Jared Allen has a broken foot and is doubtful for Sunday’s NFC championship game at Arizona. Allen sustained the injury in the fourth quarter of Carolina’s 31-24 win over Seattle yesterday but finished the game. Rivera didn’t specify which foot was injured.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka made short work of her Belgian opponent to advance to the second round at Melbourne Park. The No. 14-seeded Azarenka, who won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, beat Alison Van Uytvanck 6-0, 6-0 in just 53 minutes Tuesday.
Azarenka entered the tournament in strong form after winning the warmup tournament in Brisbane. She’ll play Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in the second round.
The former No. 1-ranked Azarenka was nearly flawless in the first set, winning 91 percent of her first-service points and allowing Van Uytvanck, a French Open quarterfinalist last year, just 13 winning points.

UNDATED (AP) – USA Basketball has released its list of 30 finalists for roster spots on the 2016 men’s Olympic team. The list includes LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, who are hoping to become the first American men’s basketball players to play in four Olympics.

Oklahoma didn’t just move to the top of The Associated Press Top 25, the Sooners are a unanimous No. 1.
Coming off a week with two 2-point wins, the Sooners (15-1) received all 65 first-place votes from the national media panel on Monday. It is Oklahoma’s first time at No. 1 since the final two weeks of 1989-90. Kentucky was a unanimous No. 1 for 12 weeks last season.
Oklahoma becomes the fifth school to be No. 1 this season, joining North Carolina, Kentucky, Michigan State and Kansas.
North Carolina jumps three spots to No. 2 while Kansas, which lost to West Virginia last week, dropped two places to No. 3.
Villanova is fourth followed by Xavier, West Virginia, Maryland, SMU, Iowa and Texas A&M.
No. 21 Southern California, ranked for the first time since 2008-09, and No. 25 Indiana, which returns after being out the last seven weeks, are this week’s newcomers, replacing Pittsburgh and Gonzaga.

Duke’s streak of 312 straight weeks in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll is over.
The Blue Devils entered the Top 25 on Nov. 29, 1999 and hadn’t left until Monday. It’s the third longest streak in the history of the poll since it began in 1976. Only Tennessee (561) and UConn (423) have had longer runs in the Top 25. The Huskies remained No. 1 on Monday after routing Memphis and Temple this past week by an average of 47.5 points.
UConn was followed by South Carolina, Notre Dame, Baylor and Maryland. Texas dropped to sixth after losing its first game of the season to Baylor on Sunday.
Duke (13-6) has lost three of its last five games to Syracuse, Louisville and N.C. State. The Blue Devils spent 34 weeks at No. 1 during its 16-year run.

BAGHDAD (AP) – A U.N. report reveals a heavy toll of civilians in fighting the past two years between Iraqi forces and the Islamic State group. The report says at least 18,802 civilians were killed and another 36,245 were wounded between the start of 2014 and Oct. 31 of last year. The report also documents a wide range of human rights abuses, including IS conscription of some 3,500 people into slavery. Methods of execution included beheading, burning alive and being thrown off buildings.
BRUSSELS (AP) – The aid group Doctors Without Borders says some European Union nations are making the migrant crisis worse. The group says attempts to deter migrants have put thousands of people, including women and children, in danger and created more business for smugglers. In a report, it said border closures and tougher policing only encourage people to use other routes to get to Europe.
HONOLULU (AP) – Teams searching the waters off Hawaii where two Marine helicopters crashed have found inflated, empty life rafts but still no sign of the missing personnel. Three of the four life rafts aboard the helicopters have been recovered. Conditions have improved since the start of the search, with much smaller waves. The search now includes areas along the shoreline as well as under water.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – Iran’s top leader is echoing world powers as he calls for his own country’s vigilance in ensuring the other parties to the nuclear deal hold up their end of the bargain. State media report Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (hah-meh-neh-EE’) also expressed “pessimism” about U.S. intentions due to “expressions by some U.S. politicians in recent days.”
LONDON (AP) – Amid increasing calls for an Academy Award boycott over the nomination of an all-white roster of performers for the Oscars for the second year running, actor Idris Elba says the lack of diversity is not just an American problem. The London-born star of “The Wire” and “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” told an audience at Parliament that despite Britain’s diversity and multiculturalism, “you wouldn’t know it if you turned on the TV.”
NEW YORK (AP) – Glenn Frey, who co-founded the Eagles and with Don Henley became one of history’s most successful songwriting teams with such hits as “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane,” has died.
Frey was 67 and had been battling multiple ailments. He died Monday. The band’s website says he died in New York.
Guitarist Frey and drummer Henley formed the Eagles in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, along with guitarist Bernie Leadon and bassist Randy Meisner. They would become a top act over the next decade, embodying the melodic California sound.
An Eagles greatest hits collection from the mid-1970s and “Hotel California” are among the best-selling albums in history.
Frey’s solo hits include “The Heat Is On” and “Smuggler’s Blues.”
