In world and national news….

NEW YORK (AP) – Residents of the mid-Atlantic states and the Northeast can have a buffet of winter weather today, including snow, sleet and freezing rain. This being Presidents’ Day, many people don’t have to work so travel may be less difficult. Forecasters say the most snow, up to eight inches, could fall on eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and western New York.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The unexpected death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia may have added a major issue to this year’s campaign for the presidency. Scalia’s death drew an immediate declaration from Republicans that the next president should nominate his replacement, not President Barack Obama. Obama says he will nominate a candidate this year — his last in office — setting up a confirmation fight with the GOP-controlled Senate.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Flags are at half-staff around the Washington, D.C. area and the body of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has been returned to Virginia. A judge in Texas says Scalia died of natural causes and no autopsy was necessary. Scalia’s colleagues and others praised his brilliance and grieved his death. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she and Scalia “were best buddies.”

BEIRUT (AP) – Medical facilities in Syria have apparently been in the crosshairs for air and missile strikes today, to deadly effect. Opposition activists say a missile struck a children’s hospital in the north Syrian town of Azaz, killing at least 10 people, including three children. A spokeswoman for an international aid agency says a makeshift clinic supported by Doctors Without Borders was destroyed by a Russian airstrike in northern Syria. Dozens of casualties are reported.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – Witnesses who insisted on anonymity say four American journalists who were covering the anniversary of Bahrain’s 2011 uprising have been arrested amid a long crackdown on dissent. Bahraini officials declined to immediately comment. The U.S. Embassy in Manama (mah-NAH’-mah) said in a statement today that it’s “aware of the arrest of four U.S. citizens in Bahrain” but that it cannot discuss the case. Bahrain is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.
