Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Dec 27, 2012) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol, Thursday released the names of the six men killed in a crash Wednesday (Dec 26, 2012) about 10:26 a.m., on I-94 west Jamestown.

The men killed were occupants in a 2002 Chevrolet pickup westbound on I- 94 west if the Highway 281 Exit, that went out of control on the ice-covered road.

The pickup crossed the median into the path of an eastbound 2006 Freightliner semi pulling a trailer, which struck the passenger side of the pickup.

The Highway Patrol listed the occupants, all from Missiouri as: the pickup driver, 47-year-old Martin Zuniga, of Republic; and the passengers,51-year-old Mayolo Lopez, of Springfield; 43-year-old Albino Galicia Martinez, of Springfield; 50-year-old Epitacio Acosta Padron, of Springfield; 54-year-old Jose Isabel Avila, of Springfield; and 34-year-old Herson Orellana of Nixa.

The patrol said three of the pickup’s occupants were ejected during the crash and all six were killed.

None were wearing seatbelts.

The semi’s driver, 23 year old Stuart Hauge, of Glen Ullin, North Dakota suffered minor injuries and was taken by Jamestown Ambulance to Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

He was wearing a seat belt.

The crash caused both eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 to be closed for about two hours on the debris littered roadway.

The pickup was totaled and the semi and trailer received about $40,000 in damages.

The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office, Jamestown Police Department, Jamestown Fire Department and North Dakota Department of Transportation also responded to the crash, which remains under investigation.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Jamestown Police investigated a two vehicle accident, in downtown Jamestown, on First Avenue, South, during the noon hour, Thursday (Dec 27, 2012).

It was not immediately known the extent of any injuries.

Law enforcement urges drivers to slow down and use caution with snow and ice covered roadways, in town, and on the highways.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol responded Thursday (Dec 27, 2012) to an accident on Interstate 94 west of Jamestown near the Wednesday accident that claimed the lives of six Missouri men.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown City Council met in Special Session Thursday afternoon (Dec 27, 2012) at City Hall.

The City Council went into Executive Session, to consult with the City Attorney concerning territorial service claims by Stutsman Rural Water District, including the area of Jamestown Regional Medical Center, and the Titan Machinery building under construction in that area.

City officials attending the Executive Session included: Mayor Andersen, City Attorney Ken Dalsted, City Administrator Jeff Fuchs, City Fire Chief Jim Reuther, City Engineer Reed Schwartzkopf, and City Council Members, Buchanan, and Kourajian.

Following the Executive Session, the City Council reconvened the Special  Session.

The City Council then voted 3-0 (Council Members Brubakken, and Gumke not present) to retain outside legal counsel, and and consulting services to represent the city in negotiations with Stutsman Rural Water District.

Council Member Buchanan said the legal fees of the attorney, and consultant could be controlled based on need of services.

Also passed unanimously was a motion to authorize City Attorney, Ken Dalsted to respond to the letter, from Rural Water, of December 14, 2012.

The last reported offer from Stutsman Rural Water District on December 14, 2012 was:

Jamestown paying Rural Water $15,000 for lost profits due to the city providing water to JRMC.

Rural Water had originally asked for $2.91 per 1,000 gallons for all water used by JRMC since it opened. The city estimated that amount at about $25,000.

  • Rural Water would be allowed to provide a backup water supply to JRMC.
  • Jamestown would be allowed to provide water to Titan Machinery but would be required to pay a royalty of $1.50 per 1,000 gallons with the royalty rate to increase by the consumer price index or the percentage rate increase Rural Water imposes on its customers, whichever is higher.
  • The contract would be in place for 40 years or as long as Rural Water is in debt.

At a Special City Council meeting that afternoon, that proposal from Rural Water was rejected, and Mayor Andersen said the city would send written response to Stutsman Rural Water District on their latest proposal.

Thursday afternoon’s open portion of the City Council meeting was shown live on CSi Cable 67, followed by replays.

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Following the death of six men, in a crash between a pickup and a semi Wednesday morning (Dec 26, 2012) on I-94, near Jamestown, the North Dakota Highway Patrol reminds motorists, to….NOT…use their vehicle’s cruise control, while roadway conditions are slippery….and slow down.

The Highway Patrol said the pickup that lost control in Wednesday’s accident, may have had the cruise control engaged, which caused the truck to lose control, crossing the median and t-boned by a semi in the oppose lane.

Also three accidents on Wednesday morning on Interstate 94 near Valley City, led to personal injuries.

One accident occurred near exit 294 involving a pickup pulling a boat and trailer, which struck an overhead sign.

A pickup truck and car were involved in an accident on the interstate, when the eastbound pickup went into the median and entered the westbound lane, and struck by a car.

Another accident involved pickup truck, pulling a trailer, going off the roadway into the ditch, near Exit 290. No injuries reported

Those injured were treated at Mercy Hospital in Valley City with non life threatening injuries.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The New Year, New You Wellness Challenge 2013 is

Accepting registrations through January 6, 2013.

On Thursday’s (Dec 27, 2012) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, organizer, Emily Kjelland said, the program is a community wide 6 week Wellness challenge that encourages participants to exercise and make healthy lifestyle changes in addition to promoting health awareness and enhancing education.

2013 is the 6th year of sponsoring the program.

The mission is to make Jamestown the healthiest city in North Dakota.

Participants create teams and gain points for healthy activities. Points are then reported weekly to the appointed team leader.

The team’s averaged point total is reported and ranked amongst competing teams weekly in the Jamestown Sun as well as online.

New Year New You is for all residents in the Jamestown area.

There are 3 divisions: Large Business, Small Business, and Friends and Family. A small business is 15 or fewer participants; a large business is over 16 participants. We had 535 participants last year and hope to get more on-board this year!

The goals of this program are to motivate the citizens of Jamestown to make lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use and to assist each individual to attain their highest health potential.

Inspiring stories come forth each year from our participating teams!

The sponors include: JRMC, Orriginals, ND Farmers Union Insurance, White Drug, Redlin Johnson, DuraTech, and Agri Cover.

This year’s community challenge is also supported by the BCBS UND Rural Health: Recess Partnership grant. The James River Family YMCA and Jamestown Regional Medical Center partnered to apply for the grant with 2 goals in mind: to increase opportunities for Stutsman County residents to engage in physical activities regardless of ability to pay as well as increase physical activity of youth, general workforce and seniors.

In conjunction with the partnership, each NYNY participant will get an 11 day punch card to the YMCA to be used for group classes, Fitness on Demand, and general use of the facility.

Participants gain points each day by eating 5 fruits and vegetables as well as accumulating minutes of physical activity. Additionally, each week corresponds with a focus to get participants thinking about different aspects of health and wellness. There will be an article in the Jamestown Sun each week highlighting that week’s topic. There are no videos to watch this year. A new aspect is that there will be an optional workout prepared each week for those looking to learn new ways to exercise or add variety to their current routines. We have nutrition tracking challenges prepared as an opportunity to gain even more points each week. A new addition for this year is partnering with the Community Health Assessment – Community Health Improvement Plan to decrease distracted driving. One point per day can be earned by wearing a seat belt and not using your cell phone as you drive.

With the weekly topics there is a Nutrition focus this year. Weekly topics include: Hydration, Portion Control & Calorie Counting, Fat, Fiber, Sodium, and Sugar.

The cost is $8 per participant for the 2013 NYNY dry-fit T-shirt. This is a non-profit challenge through the JRMC Wellness Center.

Go to www.jrmcnd.com to access registration forms for each of the 3 divisions. Additional information can be found on the JRMC website.

Once your group is together, and money collected, the paperwork and one check can be brought to the Wellness Center. Weekly points are submitted online at www.jrmcnd.com each week. Points will be tracked and submitted to the Jamestown Sun to be printed every Thursday along with an article that ties into the weekly focus. To sign up please visit www.jrmcnd.com. Deadline is Sunday January 6th

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A 32-year-old man arrested after a standoff in New Town, N.D.  last week will continue to be held in custody pending a trial on an unrelated firearms charge.

Michael Jason Smith barricaded himself in a home in New Town on Dec. 19 when law enforcement officers tried to arrest him on numerous charges, including narcotics charges in Colorado. He was taken into custody on Dec. 20 when officials used a front-end loader to break into the home in western North Dakota.

Smith appeared in federal court Thursday on an unrelated charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Magistrate Judge Charles Miller ordered that Smith be held pending trial on the firearms charge.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An undetermined amount of money was stolen from two cash registers in the Bismarck Kmart while the store was open.

Police say someone took a screwdriver from the store Wednesday evening and forced open two cash registers in the store’s layaway area.

The  two cash registers were destroyed.

Authorities are studying video to determine if they can find anyone acting suspiciously at the time the crimes were committed. Police say no suspects have been identified.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 38-year-old man has been charged with stabbing two men during a dispute at a Fargo bar last weekend.

Jason Pederson is charged in Cass County District Court with two counts of attempted murder. He faces a maximum penalty of four years in prison on each charge.

Police say officers responding to the call at Speck’s Bar found one man bleeding from the face and another man cut in the next area. Pederson fled in his vehicle but was stopped by an officer a few blocks from the bar.

Fargo Police Lt. Joel Vettel says victims and witnesses identified Pederson as the assailant, and alcohol was a factor.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple and North Dakota’s congressional delegation say the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will soon issue permits to tap surplus water from Lake Sakakawea for use by oil companies and other industrial users.

State officials say the corps is reviewing several applications that would draw more than 30,000 acre feet of water from the Missouri River reservoir. An acre-foot is the amount of water covering an acre, one foot deep.

Dalrymple and the state’s congressional delegation maintain that North Dakota owns Missouri River water in the state and it should be made permanently available to water users at no cost.  North Dakota officials say the state will fight any attempt to charge users for water in the future.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – A wildlife biologist says some endangered black-footed ferrets recently spotted in South Dakota could be remnants of a long-lost colony.

Officials working with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe photographed an adult ferret and two juveniles during a series of nighttime surveys in prairie dog towns near Mobridge. The ferrets were first spotted Halloween night.

Barry Betts, biologist for the tribe, tells the Sioux Falls Argus Leader he believes it’s the first sighting of a wild black-footed ferret since a colony was discovered in Wyoming three decades ago.

However, Pete Gober, coordinator of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s national ferret recovery program, says it’s unlikely that the animals are part of a wild colony.

Gober says the ferrets likely migrated from one of six reintroduction sites in South Dakota.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – The debate over the “fiscal cliff” continues to take a partisan tone, with just days remaining before the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts kick in. On the Senate floor Thursday, Democratic leader Harry Reid charged that House Speaker John Boehner (BAY’-nur) “seems to care more about keeping his speakership than about keeping the nation on sound financial footing.”  In response, a Boehner spokesman said Reid “should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is back at the White House after a flight from Hawaii, where he’d been vacationing with his family. The White House says the president made phone calls Wednesday to the House and Senate Democratic and Republican leaders to get an update on efforts to avoid the cliff. Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell’s office says Obama’s phone call was the first from a Democrat on the fiscal cliff since Thanksgiving.

NEW YORK (AP) – Ordinary Americans are losing their faith in stocks: For the fifth year in a row, they are selling their holdings. An analysis by The Associated Press finds that individual investors have pulled at least $380 billion from U.S. stock funds since April 2007. That is equal to all the money they put into the market in the previous five years. And the selling has not let up despite a doubling of stock prices since March 2009.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A powerful winter storm blamed for 15 deaths in other parts of the country is bringing rain to southern New England and snow farther north, but the region has been largely spared the pounding that other states took. The storm pushed through the Upper Ohio Valley and made its way into the Northeast last night, leaving up to a foot of snow in some locations by Thursday morning.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Efforts to arm teachers are under way in several states, in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting. In Ohio, a firearms group says it’s launching a test program in tactical firearms training for 24 teachers. Arizona’s attorney general wants to change state law to let an educator in each school carry a gun. And gun-right advocates in Utah today are offering up to six hours of training in handling concealed weapons for up to 200 schoolteachers.
