RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) – A federal jury has convicted a man accused of hiring a hit man to kill two of his associates in a dispute over business dealings in the North Dakota oil patch.

The Spokesman-Review newspaper of Spokane reports the jury returned its verdict Thursday after a day of deliberation in the case of James Henrikson, who was accused of hiring Timothy Suckow to kill Spokane businessman Doug Carlile and Kristopher Clarke, associates tied to North Dakota’s oil-field business.

Henrikson’s federal trial was moved from Spokane to Richland because of extensive publicity over the 2013 shooting death of Carlile at his upscale home.  Clarke was bludgeoned at a North Dakota truck stop.

Henrikson told police that Carlile, a self-employed contractor, owed him nearly $2 million, though prosecutors said there was no evidence of that.

     Suckow has already pleaded guilty.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – An 82-year-old Trenton driver faces several charges after allegedly hitting a law officer who dashed into a Williston street to save a child who had wandered into traffic.

Authorities allege that Milton Bergh almost ran down the girl on Feb. 18, then grazed officer Kyle Martin with his vehicle after Martin saved the preschooler.

Williams County Sheriff’s Capt. Verlan Kvande (KWAWN’-dee)  says injuries to Martin’s leg and hand weren’t serious and he is back at work.

Bergh is charged with felony reckless endangerment, as well as misdemeanor driving offenses. The Associated Press requested comment from his attorney.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Minot man accused of killing his ex-wife last November has pleaded not guilty to murder.

29-year-old Richie Wilder Jr. waived his preliminary hearing on Thursday and entered his plea in the death of 30-year-old Angila Wilder.

A pretrial conference is scheduled May 4. Wilder’s trial date was not immediately set.

He could face life in prison if convicted.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police in Minot are investigating burglaries of neighboring businesses in the southeast part of the city.

Capt. John Klug says the first was reported just after 6 a.m. Wednesday at Hensen’s Fur & Leather. A door to the business was found forced open and the business was entered.

While investigating this burglary, officers discovered that suspects pried open the windows of Gaffaney’s and entered the office supply business.

Klug says the investigation of both break-ins is ongoing.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A program aimed at helping North Dakota communities deal with the effects of energy development has been suspended due to slumping oil activity.

North Dakota’s Board of University and School Lands also voted Thursday to put on hold millions of dollars of projects that have receive grants but work hasn’t started.

Trust Lands Commissioner Lance Gaebe (GAY’-bee) says the Oil and Gas Impact Grant Fund earlier was projected to collect $140 million for the current two-year budget cycle. He says it’s only projected to collect $28.6 million now due to low oil prices and a drop in oil production tax revenues.

He says the board has already obligated about $42 million in projects so the fund is “upside down.”

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Nearly five years after historic Souris River flooding in northern North Dakota, there are still no concrete proposals for changes to river management to prevent a similar flood.

The International Souris River Board that manages the river that flows in and out of North Dakota from Canada says it has been unsuccessful in getting money from either the Canada or U.S. government to study potential changes.

Board Canadian Co-Chairman Russel Boals says officials are discouraged. U.S. Co-Chairman Todd Sando says the state of North Dakota has ponied up some money for studies, but any management changes are years away.

The June 2011 flood damaged or destroyed more than 4,000 homes and other structures in Minot and caused additional damage in rural areas, resulting in more than $1 billion in damage.
