Jamestown (CSi) District 12 Republicans nominated Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen as its candidate for the North Dakota Senate during its district convention Thursday evening.
Bernie Satrom and Jim Grueneich were also nominated as candidates for the two seats on the North Dakota House of Representatives.
Andersen is in her second term as Jamestown mayor. She said she intends to hold both positions if elected to the Senate.
She said, “There are a few state legislators who serve in either city government or as a county commissioner.”
In her acceptance speech for the nomination, Andersen talked about seeking a balance that includes “limited government that practices fiscal responsibility.”
Andersen will face Sen. John Grabinger, D-Jamestown, who was elected to the Senate in 2012.
Andersen anticipates the state’s financial and budget issues and how they impact Jamestown residents will be the biggest issue in the election.
Satrom said the region faces challenges in the future.
Grueneich called for improvement in education and law enforcement in his acceptance speech.
Satrom and Grueneich will face Rep. Jessica Haak, D-Jamestown, and Democratic candidate Pam Musland for the District 12 seats on the House of Representatives. Haak was elected to the House in 2012. The other incumbent from the district, Rep. Alex Looysen, R-Jamestown, is not seeking re-election to the House.
Andersen, Satrom and Grueneich will be on the June 14th primary ballot with the general election for the offices Nov. 8.
Jamestown (CSi) A Jamestown man pleaded guiltyto two counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of child endangerment in Southeast District Court in Jamestown, Thursday.
21 year old Demietrius Daniel, pleaded guilty to two Class A and one Class C felony charges in exchange for Stutsman County Assistant State’s Attorney Katherine Naumann dropping two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, one a Class A misdemeanor and the other a Class B misdemeanor, one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle and one count of DUI/actual physical control, both Class A misdemeanors.
Daniel’s attorney, Russel Myhre of Valley City asked Judge Greenwood to lower Daniel’s bail to a lesser amount because he cannot come up with $3,000. Naumann said she had concerns about lowering the bail amount because Daniel has not shown up for court dates in past cases and not stayed in contact with court personnel when instructed to do so.
Daniel will be sentenced at 9 a.m. May 3 in Southeast District Court in Jamestown. Judge John Greenwood set Daniel’s bail at $3,000 cash.
The maximum penalty for a Class A felony is 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. The maximum penalty for a Class C felony is five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Jamestown (CSi) Two women have been charged with theft of property in connection with missing firearms from a rural Jamestown apartment.
25 year old Julia Grajeda, no address listed, and 31 year old Esther Cruz, of 106 6th St. Northwest Apt 2, were each charged with theft of property a Class C felony, in Southeast District Court in Jamestown. Both women are free on bond.
On January 29th, a rural Stutsman County resident arrived home and discovered two people sleeping on his couch. The man knew one of the people, a female. He searched his house and allegedly found six firearms had been taken from a gun cabinet. The man woke the couple and called Stutsman County Communications Center to report the people in his house without his permission and the missing firearms.
The investigation later determined that Cruz and Grajeda had allegedly been at the man’s rural Stutsman County home the day before to pick up the couple found in the house.
Court records show that while Grajeda and Cruz were at the house, they allegedly took the firearms and then later that day allegedly traded some of the firearms to a drug dealer in Bismarck for methamphetamine and heroin.
The maximum penalty for a Class C felony is five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – Officials are looking into expanding the Stutsman County Jail in Jamestown.
Jail administrator Chad Jackson and county auditor Casey Bradley say a rise in the number of local inmates has cut into some of the contracts with other agencies to house inmates. They say the county is looking for ways to make up for that lost revenue.
Bradley says steps of already been taken to handle more inmates, including switching to video visitation and cutting back staff hours.
The Stutsman County Commission and Jamestown City Council will split the $60,000 cost for a feasibility study by a Bismarck firm.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Trial has been delayed for a Minnesota man accused of starting a fire that heavily damaged a Somali restaurant across the North Dakota border in Grand Forks.
Twenty-five-year-old Matthew Gust of East Grand Forks earlier pleaded not guilty to a charge of malicious use of explosive materials and was scheduled for trial beginning March 15 in Fargo.
Court documents show that the defense asked for more time to prepare, and U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson has rescheduled the trial for May 3.
Authorities say the Dec. 7 fire at the Juba Coffee House was started by a homemade explosive and caused an estimated $90,000 in damage. Vandals earlier spray-painted what some have described as a Nazi-like symbol on the business, but investigators don’t know if that’s connected to the fire.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Trenton driver faces several charges after allegedly hitting a law officer who dashed into a Williston street to save a child who had wandered into traffic. Authorities say Milton Bergh almost ran down the girl and grazed officer Kyle Martin with his vehicle after Martin saved the preschooler. Bergh is charged with felony reckless endangerment and misdemeanor driving offenses.
RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) – A federal jury has convicted a man accused of hiring a hit man to kill two of his associates in a dispute over business dealings in the North Dakota oil patch.
The Spokesman-Review newspaper of Spokane reports the jury returned its verdict Thursday after a day of deliberation in the case of James Henrikson, who was accused of hiring Timothy Suckow to kill Spokane businessman Doug Carlile and Kristopher Clarke, associates tied to North Dakota’s oil-field business.
Henrikson’s federal trial was moved from Spokane to Richland because of extensive publicity over the 2013 shooting death of Carlile at his upscale home. Clarke was bludgeoned at a North Dakota truck stop.
Henrikson told police that Carlile, a self-employed contractor, owed him nearly $2 million, though prosecutors said there was no evidence of that.
Suckow has already pleaded guilty.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Violent crimes dropped last year in Williston, but police in the western North Dakota oil patch hub spent many more hours investigating drug activity.
The police department’s 2015 annual report shows that rape, assaults and robberies all dropped in the city compared to 2014.
But the detective division spent more than 1,100 hours on drug investigations, more than double the hours spent in 2014. Authorities say the drug activity is connected to high rates of burglary and theft in Williston.
Lt. Detective David Peterson says criminal activity in the city has become more organized, with people working together on thefts and burglaries to raise money for drugs.
Northwest Narcotics Task Force Special Agent Patrick Lenertz says drug prices remain high despite the oil industry’s downturn.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police in Minot are investigating burglaries of neighboring businesses in the southeast part of the city.
Capt. John Klug says the first was reported just after 6 a.m. Wednesday at Hensen’s Fur & Leather. A door to the business was found forced open and the business was entered.
While investigating this burglary, officers discovered that suspects pried open the windows of Gaffaney’s and entered the office supply business.
Klug says the investigation of both break-ins is ongoing.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The State Historical Society of North Dakota is taking grant applications to provide funding for local museums and historical societies for a variety of projects.

NEW YORK (AP) – Major League Baseball and the players’ union have banned rolling blocks to break up potential double plays. A runner now must attempt a “bona fide slide,” and an umpire can call both the runner and batter out for a violation. Baserunners may not elevate or kick a leg above the fielder’s knee or throw his arm or upper body.
Outfielder Dexter Fowler is staying with the Chicago Cubs after all, spurning a three-year, $33 million offer from the Baltimore Orioles to accept a one-year, $13 million deal that includes a mutual option for 2017. Fowler gets $8 million this year, and the sides have a $9 million option for 2017 with a $5 million buyout.
