Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Police Department reports that in 2015,domestic assaults increased 17.5 percent from 2014.
Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger, says, police responded to 127 domestic assault calls in 2015, up from 108 in 2014. In 2013 there were 96 domestic assault calls.
Edinger says the increase in domestic assaults is part of an overall increase in violent crimes in Jamestown. Aggravated assault calls increased in 2015, as did simple assault and child abuse/neglect calls.
He adds that another reason why there is an increase in domestic assault calls is due to multiple calls to the same house or incident.
SAFE Shelter Executive Director Lynne Tally points out the shelter’s numbers show a slight increase in domestic assault cases from 2014 to 2015, from 139 to 141.
Tally adds most domestic assault cases that come to SAFE Shelter involve addiction issues such as alcohol and drug abuse and mental health issues.
Sometimes it is the victim who has these issues, sometimes it is the abuser, and sometimes it is both who have addiction issues
SAFE Shelter offers help for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking.
ANTLER, N.D. (AP) – Antler Mayor Bruce Hanson says tearing down a dilapidated building that white supremacist Craig Cobb once tried to buy puts a symbolic end to the town’s effort to block him.
The town on Monday razed a former bank building Cobb had wanted to turn into a church for his religion. City officials thwarted his plans by buying all of the town’s vacant property.
The town is trying to recoup nearly $50,000 it spent. The demolition included a fundraiser lunch. Officials also are trying to draw attention to their GoFundMe crowdfunding site account.
Cobb lives in nearby Sherwood, where he’s serving probation for terrorizing and menacing residents of Leith when he lived there. He’s said he wasn’t treated fairly by Antler. Town officials maintain they did nothing wrong.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A woman accused of stealing a student’s prescription drugs when she worked at a Bismarck school has pleaded guilty.
Forty-five-year-old instructional strategist Tania Gerving faced a felony theft charge with a maximum sentence of five years in prison. A sentencing date has not been set.
Gerving had worked as a coach for teachers at Horizon Middle School since 2011. She resigned in January.
Court documents say police had received complaints of stolen medications at the middle school for nearly two years. Authorities arrested Gerving after they say a surveillance camera installed in the room where the medications are kept captured her on video.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Mandan man shot by a Bismarck police officer earlier this year has pleaded not guilty to charges.
Eighteen-year-old Miguel Stubing was shot by Sgt. Jordan West on Jan. 23 after allegedly ignoring verbal commands and driving toward West, who was responding to reports of a vehicle stolen out of Mandan.
Court documents show West fired five times at the vehicle to protect himself. The vehicle fled the scene and was later stopped by officers in Emmons County.
Stubing on Monday pleaded not guilty to felony theft of property, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and reckless endangerment. He also pleaded not guilty to reckless driving, a misdemeanor.
Stubing could face more than 20 years in prison if convicted on all counts. A trial date wasn’t immediately set.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gasoline prices are on the rise in North Dakota as the calendar turns to March.
GasBuddy.com reports that the average retail price of a gallon of gas in the state has risen more than 12 cents in the past week, to an average of $1.72. That’s according to a survey of nearly 500 gas outlets in North Dakota.
Despite the rise, the average gas price in North Dakota is still more than 60 cents a gallon cheaper than a year ago.
The national average increased about 4 cents per gallon in the past week, to $1.74. Senior Petroleum Analysist Gregg Laskoski says the rise was inevitable. He says the eight-month decline in prices at the pump has come to an end.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Lawyers representing North Dakota’s lone abortion clinic in Fargo will seek litigation costs from the state after the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal last month to review lower court rulings overturning the state’s ban on abortion at six weeks of pregnancy.
Red River Women’s Clinic Director Tammi Kromenaker says its attorneys will now request reimbursement from the state, but an amount has not been calculated.
Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEHN’-juhm) says it’s likely the state will have to pay the clinic’s fees. But he says the claims would be “scrutinized very closely.”
The Republican-dominated Legislature passed the abortion law and others in 2013 and set aside $400,000 to defend lawsuits. Lawmakers added another $400,000 last year. Records show the state had used more than $320,000 to defend abortion laws through January.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Moorhead, Minnesota, man is suing Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative for injuries he suffered when he was severely burned while performing electrical work at the company’s sugar beet processing plant in Wahpeton.
Zachary White is seeking unspecified damages for the November 2014 incident.
Federal court documents show that White was working near a tank of scalding hot water that overflowed on him and a co-worker. The two workers say they were forced to jump 15 feet to the concrete floor.
The complaint says White was burned on up to 49% of his body and suffered disfiguring burns to his face, chest, arms, legs and back.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Phoenix man accused of leading an operation to move methamphetamine and heroin from Arizona to North Dakota has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. Sergio Magdaleno pleaded guilty in November to three charges. Prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 13 years in prison. Magdaleno’s court-appointed attorney asked for a sentence of about seven years.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation says the state is getting a $125,000 federal grant for a program aimed at affordable early childhood education.
The delegation says the money will be used to support the North Dakota Head Start State Collaboration Office. The office works to facilitate partnerships between Head Start agencies and other state entities that provide services to benefit low-income children and their families.
The money comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture says mild conditions have been easy on livestock and limited hay demands, as snow cover across North Dakota has been minimal as the month closed.
The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service says temperatures averaged 6 to 9 degrees above normal during February. Producers have busy moving grain to market before spring road weight limits changed.
Cattle and calf conditions are rated 1 percent poor, 12 percent fair, 77 percent good and 10 percent excellent. Calving is 7 percent complete. Winter wheat conditions are rated 5 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 2 percent excellent.
Topsoil and subsoil moisture supplies are rated mostly adequate.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A new Bank of North Dakota loan program for farmers has picked up steam, though the full dollar amount available isn’t expected to be used.
Bank of North Dakota President Eric Hardmeyer said Monday that demand for loans in the Farm Financial Stability Loan Program has gone up as farmers plan budgets. Up to $300 million is available for farmers to replenish working capital or restructure debts.
Hardmeyer says officials don’t think they’ll hit $300 million, saying $150 million to $200 million is more likely. Nearly 170 loan applications totaling $76 million had been received as of last week.
The Industrial Commission authorized the state-owned bank to begin offering the program Dec. 1. The program runs through June 30 or until funds are exhausted.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation says the state is getting about $2 million to support housing projects across the state.
The delegation says the money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will go to non-profit organizations and state and local governments to address homelessness, especially those fleeing domestic violence.
The biggest share of the money is going to the Fargo Housing and Redevelopment Authority, which is getting about $549,000.
