Bismarck  (CSi)  The national Weather Service reports a record high temperature in Jamestown Sunday, when the mercury reached 68 degrees.

The previous record was 59 set in 2000.

Williston: 70° (69° in 1987)

Fargo: 66° (63° in 2000)

Fergus Falls: 63° (53° in 2005)

Valley City (CSi) KLJ engineering announces that the permanent flood protection Phase One work will resume east of the Viking Drive Bridge starting today, as the closure of Viking Drive Bridge. The bridge and street will be open to pedestrian traffic while under construction., and then reopen when construction activities have concluded.

Updated maps for all road closures will be posted on the City of Valley City’s website www.valleycity.us when they become affective.

Jamestown (CSi) Purses for a Purpose will help raise vital funds for North Dakota Wounded Warriors, in supply a service dog.

The event takes place on Friday, March 11, 2016, from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the All Vets Club in downtown, Jamestown.

Guests on the Wayne Byers Show, Friday on CSi Cable 2 included, organizers, Shelley Nannenga, and Karmel Wanzek.

Shelley said participants can bring gently used or new designer purses to the event. Bring two purses and get to pick out two purses. Donate designer purses in advance at R.M. Stoudt and Unison Bank in Jamestown.

She said that remaining tickets are going quickly, and the tickets at $25 each, including the live show, are available in advance at The All Vets Club, Hugo’s Wine & Spirits, and Lifestyle Appliance, R.M Stoudt, all in Jamestown. NO reservations are being taken.

Karmel added that along with designer purses there will be a Live Auction, and raffles and chocolate samples.

She pointed out that along with many others in community support including sponsors, students at the University of Jamestown are supporting the event.

Music provided by Blind Joe of The Voice T.V. show, fame, and Joe Schmidt from Medina.

We visited with Blind Joe on the phone on our show, as he indicated his support of wounded veterans, who will be aided in the proceeds raised, for getting a service dog, that can help decrease the symtoms of PTSD, and TBI’s in veterans.

He will have a CD being released by the end of April this year, saying he may sing a song from the CD at Purses for a Purpose.

Shelley pointed out that Service Dogs for America in Jud, continues to train dogs, adding that the cost of a service dog is about $20,000 each.

 

Jamestown (CSi) There will be a Jamestown Public Works Committee Special Meeting on Thursday March 10, at City Hall concerning a report on the Sanitation and Solid Waste Study. (Recycling).

To give the presentation will be Brent Erickson of HDR, Inc.

A 74 page draft document has been put together.

Erickson is expected to give details.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck police officer responding to a confrontation at an apartment building shot and killed a Mandan man.
 
     Authorities say the 42-year-old man allegedly threatened another man with a shotgun late Sunday. When officers arrived the man tried to flee. Police say he ignored commands to show his hands and get on the ground.
 
     The officer believed the man to be armed and dangerous and shot him with a rifle about 11:30 p.m. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. He wasn’t immediately identified.
 
     Police say they recovered a shotgun from an apartment hallway. They didn’t say if the suspect had a weapon on him.
 
     The officer has been with the Bismarck force for eight years. He’s on administrative leave while the state crime bureau investigates. That’s normal procedure.

 

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – A woman is under arrest after an apartment fire in Wahpeton displaced 30 people.
 
     The call came in early Sunday at the Community Homes.
 
     Wahpeton Fire Chief Joel Hermes says  the fire was contained to one unit, but “multiple people” were trapped in the building.
 
     Hermes says the police department and sheriff’s office helped firefighters get residents out of the building.
 
     Some people had to be rescued by ladder. No one was hurt.
 
     Several other apartments sustained smoke and water damage.
 
     The American Red Cross is housing the displaced residents at a nearby motel.

 

 HAZEN, N.D. (AP) – A weekend collision between a car and a motorcycle on Hazen’s Main Street killed the motorcycle driver.
 
     The Highway Patrol says the car turned in front of the motorcycle about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, and the motorcycle struck the car on the passenger side.
 
     Authorities did not immediately identify the male on the motorcycle.
 
     The driver of the car wasn’t hurt.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison on a federal sexual abuse charge.
 
     Troy Woods Jr. pleaded guilty in November for the January 2014 incident on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation. Authoriities say Woods with a victim who was “incapable of appraising the nature of the conduct.”
 
     A defense attorney says Woods does not admit that it was a forcible sex act.
 
     U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson sentenced Woods to 70 months in prison and five years of supervised release.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Testing for the Zika virus is now available at the North Dakota Department of Health’s Public Health Laboratory.
 
     Zika virus testing became available at the lab last month.  Late last month that test results so far had been negative.
 
     State epidemiologist Laura Cronquist says the testing is similar to what’s done for West Nile virus. She says testing is done only for patients who have traveled to areas affected by the Zika virus and experienced symptoms in the previous seven days.
 
     Many people infected with the Zika virus don’t get sick, but for those who do, it’s usually a mild illness with symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. Health officials are investigating whether there is a link between Zika infections in pregnant women and a rare birth defect called microcephaly.

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot is mulling curbside recycling service that could improve the longevity of the city landfill.
 
     Bbout 15,000 tons of trash is collected in Minot residential areas each year.
 
     A Waste Management representative says as much as 2,400 tons of waste could be reduced from the local landfill if a curbside recycling program was introduced.
 
     A committee has recommended that the city council form a group to further research the curbside recycling plan.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Longtime state Aeronautics Commissioner Gary Ness and longtime state Aviation Council leader Fred Adams are being honored this week.
 
     The two are being inducted into the North Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame on Tuesday, during the Upper Midwest Aviation Symposium banquet in Bismarck.
 
     Ness is a former Navy pilot who served as executive director of the Aeronautics Commission from 1986-2008. He also served as chairman of the National Association of State Officials.
 
     Adams started his flying career as an air mail pilot, and he also was a pilot for Basin Electric Power Cooperative. He’s been associated with the Aviation Council for nearly a quarter century.

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – An exhibit featuring University of North Dakota Interim President Ed Schafer is on display in the Chester Fritz Library on campus.
 
     The former North Dakota governor and federal agriculture secretary began leading the school in January. He’ll serve until a permanent successor is named to Robert Kelley, who retired as president in January after nearly seven years at the Grand Forks school.
 
     The exhibit is titled “Ed Schafer: Full Circle – UND Student to UND President.” It highlights many of his accomplishments through the years.
 
     The exhibit is in the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections in the UND library.

 

 ELGIN, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol is bringing its “Trooper on a Bus” campaign to the Elgin area.
 
     The program scheduled Monday aims to boost safety around school buses. Troopers riding on buses observe traffic violations that occur around the buses and radio the information to officers in squad cars who make traffic stops.
 
     The patrol selects several towns throughout the year to highlight the dangers created by motorists who fail to stop for school buses when children are loading and unloading.
 
     Failing to stop for a school bus can result in a $100 fine for both the driver and the registered owner of the vehicle.

 

  BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A foundation that’s associated primarily with history is reinventing itself in the growing downtown arts community in Bismarck.
 
     The Lewis and Clark Fort Mandan Foundation will have offices in the old Woolworth building and use most of the space for a retail art gallery.
 
     The foundation created and supported the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center for nearly 20 years. But the facility was taken over in the fall by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department.
 
     Foundation president David Borlaug says the gallery with works by known and emerging artists will be a revenue stream to support the interpretive center. He says the foundation hopes to combine history, art and culture.
 
     A gallery grand opening is planned in the early summer.

Formal charges are pending against two University of North Dakota football players who were arrested for alleged drug offenses over the weekend.

 

 

Bismarck  (CSi) In WDA basketball tournament action the Bismarck Demons  boys basketball team defeated the Blue Jays  64-58.  Ending the Jays season.  Bismarck wins the tournamanet and heads to the State Class A Tourney.

Noah Wanzek finished his career with  20-points.   Tanner Lunzman’s 24  paced the Jays. Jamestown lost Jake Ruether less than a minute into the game and he didn’t return.

 

Bismarck –   Bismarck  St. Mary’s  outlasted the Jamestown Blue Jays  girl’s   75,  62, Friday,  ending Jamestown’s season  a West Region loser-out contest.

The Jays finished fifth in the conference in the regular season.

NASCAR…

 LAS VEGAS (AP) – Brad Keselowski’s late charge allowed him to win a Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the second time in three years.
 
     Keselowski passed Kyle Busch with five laps to go and beat Joey Logano to the checkered flag. Jimmie Johnson was third, and Busch had to settle for fourth after struggling with a right front wheel issue down the stretch.
 
     Keselowski overcame an early speeding penalty and drove his Team Penske Ford to his first Sprint Cup Series victory of the season.

 

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A plane carrying NASCAR team members that was headed from Las Vegas to Charlotte, North Carolina, made an emergency landing in Memphis.
 
     The plane landed early Monday morning at Memphis International Airport. The plane belonged to Hendrick Motorsports and was carrying team members home from a NASCAR race in Las Vegas.
 
     A Hendrick Motorsports representative tells the news station the plane landed after someone noticed smoke in the cabin. No one was injured or breathed in too much smoke.
 
     The plane is being evaluated for issues. The passengers will return to Charlotte on another flight.

 

 ENGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) – Peyton Manning is going out on top.
 
     The Denver quarterback has decided to end his accomplished 18-year NFL career after helping the Broncos to a win in Super Bowl 50.  The team has scheduled a news conference for Monday.
 
     The almost 40-year-old Manning goes out as a champion just a month after Denver beat Carolina for the title.  It came just four seasons after a series of neck surgeries put his career in doubt and prompted the Indianapolis Colts to give up on him.

 The following year, he won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award with Denver.
 
     The five-time NFL MVP is the only quarterback to achieve 200 wins in a career.  His league-record 539 touchdown passes include an NFL-best 55 in 2013.  Those are among his dozens of NFL passing records.

The official announcement comes today at an 11-a.m. news conference, which will be shown on CSi 14 ESPN.

 

 

GOLF-CADILLAC CHAMPIONSHIP…
 
     DORAL, Fla. (AP) – Adam Scott shot a 3-under 69 in the final round to win the Cadillac Championship for his second victory in a row.
 
     His 12-under total gave him a one-shot win over Bubba Watson, who posted a 68.
 
     Scott also captured The Honda Classic last week.
 
     It’s the second win for Scott in a World Golf Championships event, the other coming at Bridgestone in 2011. He’s now a 13-time winner on tour and hasn’t finished lower than second in any of his last three starts.

     SINGAPORE (AP) – South Korea’s Ha Na Jang fired a 7-under 65 to score a four-shot win at the HSBC Women’s Champions.
 
     It was the second win of the year for the 23-year-old.
 
     Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum finished second after a closing 68.
 
     TENNIS-SHARAPOVA ANNOUNCEMENT..
 
     LOS ANGELES (AP) – Maria Sharapova has called a news conference for noon today  in Los Angeles to make what her agent calls a “major announcement.”
 
     This comes days after Sharapova announced she was pulling out of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells because of a left forearm injury.
 
     She has suffered a string of injuries in recent years.
 
     The five-time major champion hasn’t competed since losing to Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarterfinals in January.

     CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago White Sox hope they have bolstered their outfield depth by working out a one-year, $5 million pact with free agent Austin Jackson.
 
     Jackson played for Seattle and the Chicago Cubs last season, batting .267 with nine homers and 48 RBIs in 136 games. He is a .273 hitter with 55 homers, 296 RBIs and 106 steals in 860 career games.

 LOS ANGELES (AP) – Former first lady Nancy Reagan is being remembered as a gracious first lady and a devoted wife. Mrs. Reagan died yesterday in Los Angeles at age 94 of congestive heart failure. Her best-known project was the “Just Say No” campaign to help kids and teens stay off drugs. After the death of former president Ronald Reagan in June 2004, Nancy Reagan dedicated herself to tending his legacy, especially at his presidential library in California.
 
     FLINT, Mich. (AP) – The verbal battle between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders is heating up. At last night’s Democratic presidential debate in Flint, Michigan, Clinton accused Sanders of turning his back on the auto industry. Sanders said Clinton’s friends on Wall Street “destroyed this economy.” The aggressive tangling marked a change in tone for the two Democrats.
 
     SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – North Korea is threatening to “push the buttons to annihilate” its southern neighbor and the United States. Seoul and Washington began their annual defensive springtime war games today, the largest ever staged.
 
     BOSTON (AP) – Unions representing construction workers in Boston have agreed to work for lower pay on projects that will provide more affordable rental housing. The Metropolitan Building Trades Council, which includes plumbers, painters, and electrical workers, is setting up units to specialize in apartment construction. Those units would be paid about one-third less than the unions’ standard commercial rates in exchange for the projects being 100 percent union.
 
     VIENNA (AP) – A belch can have its benefits. A policeman ticketed Vienna bartender Edin Mehic last month for burping too loudly after eating a doner kebab. But many people took Mehic’s side, including the Turkish company responsible for the sliced meat sandwich. The food chain gave Mehic an all-expenses-paid trip to Istanbul and reimbursed him the 70-euro fine he had to pay for belching.
