Valley City (CSi) The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 18 Presents: Carole Flatau “1916 – The Music of the Time” 7PM Thursday March 17 at the Barnes County Museum.
The music of 1916 played an incredibly interesting role in the overall history of the United States that year. The popular music reflected the changes taking place in the nation and in the world. In 1916, The Great War was already raging in Europe, and the political climate in the United States was tense. US entry into the war was on the horizon. Pop songs reflected a wide variety of happenings, proving repeatedly that music and history are entwined.
Many of the hit recordings are still known today, and many died relatively quickly. For example, “Where Did Robinson Crusoe and Friday Go On a Saturday Night?” didn’t survive for a hundred years, but “Pretty Baby” lives on. (The Robinson Crusoe recording, sung by Al Jolson, will be played. “Pretty Baby” might be an audience sing-along opportunity.”
A graduate of Valley City State Teachers College, Carole has been a Valley City citizen since she was six months old, with the exception of fifteen years (1985-2000) when she worked in the music industry in Miami. She serves on the boards of the Barnes County Arts Council and the Barnes County Historical Society, is a frequent entertainer at the Senior Center and Sheyenne Care Center, and a volunteer at the Museum. A member of several music organizations, she is on state and national boards of the National Federation of Music Clubs, and travels across the country to present workshops, speak at special events, and learn from her colleagues. This will be her third presentation on the Museum Lecture Series in Valley City.
