Valley City (CSi) The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 18 Presents: Dr. Steven King (VCSU) “The 125th Anniversary of Valley City State University: The Legacy Continues” 7PM Thursday March 24, at the Barnes County Museum.
Established in the original North Dakota Constitution of 1889 as the State Normal School, the school opened its doors on October 13, 1890 in rented quarters in Valley City and in September of 1892 moved to its present location. The school has since changed its name three times: State Normal School at Valley City to Valley City State Teachers College in 1921: Valley City Teacher College to Valley City State College in 1963, and Valley City State College to Valley City State University in 1987.
VCSU has come a long way since its original objective “to give instruction in the Science and Art of Teaching, and to prepare teachers for the efficient discharge of their duties in the public schools of the State.” Over the last twenty-five years, VCSU has adapted, adjusted, and responded to the challenges of ever changing demands in higher education. Social changes and technological innovation, as well as the political and economic fluctuations at the state and federal levels have served as the impetus for many of these changes. The flexibility and resilience to meet these challenges have made VCSU a leading institution of higher education in North Dakota. This history is a testimony to the hard work, dedication, and effort of the staff, faculty, and administration to provide a sound education for its citizens in North Dakota, the region, and the country.
Dr. Steven King is currently an associate Professor at Valley City State University where he teaches primarily European history. He received his MA at St. Cloud State University and his DA at the University of North Dakota.
