FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Federal prosecutors in the death penalty appeal of a man who killed a University of North Dakota student in 2003 say a request by defense attorneys to withdraw from the case could be seen as a “disguised delay tactic.”

Alfonso Rodriguez Jr’s lawyers say a new defense team is needed because of staffing and personnel changes in the federal system and the Minnesota federal public defender’s office.

Prosecutor Keith Reisenauer says in his response that he is opposed to the change. He says granting the defense motion will likely postpone proceedings for at least a year or more. The final appeal was filed more than five years ago.

Rodriguez, of Crookston, Minnesota, sits on death row in Terre Haute, Indiana, for killing Dru Sjodin (shuh-DEEN’), of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man who pleaded guilty to murder in Bismarck will spend 16 years in prison.

Butts is accused of stabbing 57-year-old Mississippi resident Richard Glover to death in a car in December 2014. Authorities say Glover died after suffering from more than a dozen stab wounds. Police found Glover’s body on the street next to the car.

Butts again tried to withdraw his plea on Monday saying he was pressured by his previous attorneys into pleading guilty.

Court documents list Butts’s address as Rapid City, South Dakota.

Authorities say Beattie had about 100 videos and more than 700 images of child pornography on a thumb drive seized from his office computer, some of which depicted “sadistic or masochistic conduct or other depictions of violence.”

The  North Dakota Industrial Commission on Monday rejected the recommendation from Administrative Law Judge Patrick Ward in favor of Wyoming-based Black Hills Trucking Inc.

The company is accused of illegally dumping saltwater on gravel roads about five miles southeast of Tioga in February and March 2014. The Department of Mineral Resources sought the fines after an inspector witnessed illegal dumping firsthand.

Saltwater can pose a danger to the environment and must be disposed following rules established by the Industrial Commission.

Egyptian and Cypriot officials say most passengers were eventually allowed to get off, though seven passengers and crew remain on board. Syria’s head of antiquities and museums says the technical team couldn’t reach some remote sites because of the mines.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Modern medicine in the Washington area has a decidedly 1960s look today at one of the area’s largest hospital chains. No word if the infection is ransomware, like attacks on other facilities recently.
