Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, a rollover accident on I- 94 about 9:40-a.m.,Wednesday (Jan 2, 2013) injured two people.
Highway Patrol Sgt. Tom Herzig says a car operated by 24-year-old Echo Foster of Casper, Wyoming was westbound with the vehicle’s cruise control engaged and lost control of the Dodge Intrepid and rolled it near Hobart Lake, about 20 miles east of Jamestown.
The report says, the temperature at 20 degrees and a northwest wind blowing off Hobart Lake, coupled with driving too fast for conditions, contributed to the accident.
Foster received head and facial injuries.
The passenger, 28-year-old Jordan Naeu of Jamestown received a hand injury.
The report says no safety restrains were in use.
They were transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Valley City for treatment.
The crash remains under investigation.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Motorists throughout western North Dakota Wednesday were dealing with icy roads.
The state Department of Transportation says blowing snow is sticking to roadways and causing slick conditions. The agency has issued a travel alert for the Williston, Minot, Dickinson and Bismarck regions. That means motorists can still travel but should use caution.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a northwest wind blowing snow off Hobart Lake about 9:40 a.m. led a car traveling too fast for conditions to roll in the median about 20 miles east of Jamestown. The crash injured the driver and a passenger.
Temperatures in many parts of the state hit 30 degrees early Wednesday, and the National Weather Service says daytime highs through the weekend should be about as balmy.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota has had its deadliest year on its roads in more than 30 years, with 168 people dying in 146 crashes on roads within the state.
North Dakota hadn’t topped 150 traffic fatalities since 1981.
North Dakota Highway Patrol Sgt. Tom Iverson says the 2012 traffic statistics can partially be attributed to more people driving and more miles being driven in the state. Statistics from the state Department of Transportation show a steady increase in miles traveled and registered vehicles.
The 2012 fatality tally is 20 higher than 2011 and 63 higher than 2010.
Iverson says busier roads, especially in western North Dakota’s oil country, contribute to the jump. Alcohol and failure to wear seat belts also play a part.
Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Jan 2, 2013) — The Jamestown City Engineer’s Office is informing residents that households may have already received a mailing from a firm called ‘American Water Resources of North Dakota’ or ‘AWR’, concerning a form of utility service line insurance.
This firm notified the City of Jamestown on Monday, December 31, 2012, that they would be conducting a mass mailing to resident and business addresses in Jamestown.
The City acknowledges that the individual water and sewer service lines from the City mains to the residence or business are, by City Code, the responsibility of the Property Owner.
The city further acknowledge that costs for normal repairs or replacement of these service lines are borne by the Property Owner.
The city says, this firm is not associated in any way with the City of Jamestown.
Further, the City has had no dealings with ‘AWR’ and has no knowledge of the firm and its operations, and therefore is not able to recommend any course of action regarding this mailing.
VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – A standoff in Valley City involving authorities and an armed, suicidal man ended peacefully.
Police say the man holed up in a residence for nearly six hours on New Year’s Day before leaving the home on his own and being arrested. Charges are pending.
City police and an area SWAT team responded to the incident that began about 2 a.m. Tuesday. No one was hurt.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Hospital officials have upgraded the conditions of several of the five men injured in an explosion in an ice fishing camper in northern Minnesota.
A spokesperson with Essentia Health Hospitals in Duluth, Minn.,says Rod Bolstad of Hillsboro has been upgraded from critical to serious condition, and his son Joel has been upgraded from serious to fair condition. Another son, Jacob, remains in critical condition.
Two family friends from Fargo also remain hospitalized. Al Stokke is in fair condition and Will Huotari is in critical condition.
The men had stayed overnight in the privately owned camper-ice fishing house.
Officials say the propane furnace exploded and blew out the windows Sunday on the shore of Lake of the Woods. Authorities say they are confident the explosion was accidental.
In world and national news…
BEIRUT (AP) – The United Nations now estimates that more than 60,000 people have been killed in Syria’s 21-month-old uprising against President Bashar Assad. Opposition activists had been estimating the death toll at more than 45,000. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay (NAH’-vee PEE’-leye) says the failure of the international community to take concrete action to stop the blood-letting “shames us all.” A regime airstrike on a gas station in a Damascus suburb today pushed the toll even higher.
WASHINGTON (AP) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says House Speaker John Boehner (BAY’-nur) is not returning his phone calls after pulling a legislation on Hurricane Sandy aid. The Republican governor calls the move “absolutely disgraceful” and complained about the “toxic internal politics” of the House majority. Republicans and Democrats from the affected states are demanding Boehner reverse course and allow a vote.
MONROE, Conn. (AP) – The children who escaped last month’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., have been welcomed with their parents at a school in a neighboring town. The new school has been refurbished specially for them and renamed for their old one. Superintendent Janet Robinson says the change is appropriate because “they are the Sandy Hook family.” She spoke after a private open house for the families at the former Chalk Hill School in Monroe.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – The storms that recently covered parts of the U.S. with snow won’t be enough to ease the nation’s drought. While more than 15 inches of snow have fallen on parts of the Midwest and East in recent weeks, climatologists say it would take at least 8 feet of snow – and likely far more – to return the soil to its pre-drought condition in time for spring planting.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Patti Page has died. Page made “Tennessee Waltz” one of the best-selling recordings ever and was one of the top-selling female singers in history with more than 100 million record sales. She created a distinctive sound for the music industry in 1947 by overdubbing her own voice when she didn’t have enough money to hire backup singers. Her manager says Page died on New Year’s Day in Encinitas, Calif. She was 85.
