City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says the fire was along the outside backside of a shop building.

He says minimal damage was noted to the siding of the structure.

The cause was listed as discarded hot embers put outdoors  from the fireplace

Six city fire units and 31 fire fighter were on the scene about a half hour.

No injuries reported.

Jamestown (CSi) Girls of all ages will join their fathers, grandfathers or other male role models out on the dance floor Friday April 15, 216, at Quality Inn & Suites in Jamestown.

Tickets are $20 per couple, $25 at the door. Two additional grandchildren are $5 each.

On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSI Cable 2, Co-Chair of the Relay for Life Event, Mayda Mueller, said The Fifth Annual Father/Daughter/Grandfather Social Event is for couples that include a father and daughter, grandfather and granddaughter or any other couples that include a male role model and a daughter.

Mayda added that some fathers take more than one daughter.

Also on our show, Co-Chair Carlla Maki said that couples of any age are welcome.

Mayda said, that proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Last year, with 216 guests, or 106 couples, the event raised $2,158.

The event is conducted by several community members who have felt the uncertainties cancer can bring to a family, including Carlla and her family.

The grand march, is at 6:30-p.m., where each couple is announced. After the march, couples will stand underneath a decorated arch, where onlookers, such as mothers or other family members and friends, can take photos.

Onlookers can also stay through the first dance of the evening, but are asked to leave after the song has finished.

Cookies, bars and punch will be provided for guests. There will not be alcohol provided at the event.

Mayda pointed out that the event was brought to Jamestown after Mueller heard about a similar event in Fargo and Grand Forks.

Carlla has been involved the past three years.

Attire for the event is semiformal. Girls tend to wear dresses, and it’s common that their dates wear a tie to match their gowns.

Pam Syverson is donating her time to be the disc jockey for the night, with Pit Stop Karaoke, and DiAnn Loper, who is also donating her time and rooms at the Quality Inn & Suites, will be the emcee.

Tickets in advance at Quality Inn & Suites, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Jamestown.

Bismarck (CSi) North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has awarded grants totaling $51,125 for 12 projects to develop orchards and plant trees in local communities.

The largest of these was $9,000 awarded to Hi-Line Prairie Gardens and Orchard in Valley City.

Goehring says, “The goals of the North Dakota Community Orchard Project are to increase the production of fruit and nut trees that grow in North Dakota, provide educational opportunities and foster community spirit by bringing people together to plant and tend these orchards.”

The Hi-Line Prairie Gardens and Orchard will convert approximately 4 acres of unused city property in northwest Valley City into an easily accessible outdoor recreation and educational area that is friendly to pollinator species.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot police are investigating robbery attempts at two hotels within 23 minutes, apparently by the same two suspects.

Authorities say two males entered the Mainstay Suites shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday and demanded money, but the clerk refused and the suspects fled.

Shortly after 1 a.m., two males walked into the Sierra Inn and demanded money, but the clerk took refuge in a locked office and the suspects fled again.

No weapons were displayed in either robbery attempt. Police believe the same suspects were involved in both attempts.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge is refusing to throw out what could be crucial evidence in the upcoming trial of a Fort Berthold Reservation man accused of killing with his bare hands.

Authorities allege Marcel Chase killed Toby Young Bear during a methamphetamine-fueled fight in December 2014, and then stashed the body in the trunk of his mother’s car. He’s scheduled for trial late next month and could face life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

Defense attorney Paul Myerchin contends police violated Chase’s rights in gathering evidence without a warrant and questioning him without an attorney present. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Volk disputes that.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland recently ruled that legal precedent was on the side of prosecutors.

Myerchin declined comment to The Associated Press.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota health officials say they’re concerned about a decline in the state’s kindergarten immunization rates.

Immunization surveillance coordinator Lexie Barber says a vaccination rate of 95 percent is recommended for measles, mumps or rubella to maintain herd immunity in schools and prevent cases and outbreaks.  The North Dakota Department of Health says data from the 2015-2016 school assessment indicates the state’s kindergarten MMR vaccine coverage rate is about 87.9 percent.

Barber says low vaccination coverage rates leave North Dakota schools susceptible to outbreaks. She says it’s important to maintain high vaccination rates to ensure that schools are a safe and healthy place for children to learn.

Health officials urge all parents to make sure their children are up to date on immunizations.

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The Dakotas and two dozen other states are weighing in on a legal battle over a cross in Maryland.

The atheist American Humanist Association has appealed a federal judge’s ruling that a 40-foot-tall cross on land owned by the state of Maryland doesn’t violate the U.S. Constitution. The case is in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says that state, North Dakota and 24 others have signed a brief asking the appeals court to affirm the federal judge’s ruling.

The judge ruled in December that the 90-year-old monument known as the Bladensburg Cross doesn’t amount to government sponsorship of religion. The judge wrote that the cross was meant predominantly for secular commemoration of World War I. The humanist association says the cross endorses Christianity.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Williston is gearing up to host the 2016 Babe Ruth World Series in August.

Officials last week put up a new scoreboard at Aafedt Stadium. The $230,000, half-ton scoreboard with a large video screen was funded by donations.

The Williston Herald reports that tournament organizers also have lined up former Major League Baseball pitcher Jack Morris to be the keynote speaker for an Aug. 12 banquet that will kick off the event. Morris played for four MLB teams including Minnesota and is now a broadcaster for the Twins.

The Babe Ruth World Series is Aug. 13-20. Williston also hosted the tournament in 2013.

In world and natioanl news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – The head of the Republican National Committee is scoffing at Donald Trump’s complaints about the party’s nominating process. Trump told supporters in New York last night that the system is “absolutely rigged.” But party chairman Reince Priebus (ryns PREE’-bus) responds, “Give us all a break.” On Twitter, he said the nomination process has been known for more than a year — and that it’s up to the campaigns to learn it.

NEW YORK (AP) – New York City Democrats are getting a chance to hear the candidate they support Wednesday — no matter which one it is. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are both holding rallies in the city — Clinton in the Bronx and Sanders in Manhattan’s Washington Square Park. Sanders today announced his first endorsement from one of his Senate colleagues — Jeff Merkley of Oregon. He also got the backing of a transit workers union.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – A coroner’s report shows that slain football star Will Smith was shot eight times the night he died – seven times in the back and once in the left side of his chest. The New Orleans coroner’s statement Wednesday came as a lawyer for Smith’s family said Smith never brandished a gun when he was shot Saturday night. Police said Tuesday that Smith had a gun in the car the night he and another man confronted each other after a car crash. But the gun was never fired.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) – Israel has promoted an Arab police officer to deputy commissioner, making him the highest-ranking Muslim to serve in the force. The promotion comes at a time when Israel is battling a seven month-long wave of Palestinian attacks, though that violence has ebbed in recent weeks. It has nevertheless strained already tense relations between Jews and Israel’s Arab minority. Gamal Hakroosh will oversee the policing of Arab communities. Arabs make up one-fifth of Israel’s population of 8 million and as citizens enjoy equal rights.

NEW YORK (AP) – A 24-year-old man who was paralyzed by a spinal cord injury has regained some use of his right hand — controlling it with signals relayed from electronic sensors in his brain. In a study released by the journal Nature, researchers say the man can grasp a bottle, pour its contents into a jar, pick up a stick and stir the liquid. He can grab a credit card and swipe it through a reader. He can also move individual fingers. Researchers say they hope that someday, an improved version of the system may also help people with traumatic brain injury or stroke.
