Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown retail sales activity jumped by 19.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2015 when compared to the fourth quarter of 2014.

JSDC, CEO Connie Ova, points out that “The new stores and the quality of the existing businesses contribute to that.”

Jamestown saw an overall 2.2 percent increase in sales and use tax activity, which compares to a statewide decline of 25 percent. Of North Dakota’s 50 largest cities, Jamestown was one of just nine cities that saw an increase in sales and use tax collections.

Stutsman County sales and use tax collections for the quarter were up 2 percent for the fourth quarter. Stutsman County was one of six counties to see an increase.

Jamestown fourth-quarter sales and use tax increased from $65.3 million in 2014 to $66.7 million in 2015.

The increase was pushed by retail sales, which climbed from $34.7 million for the fourth quarter of 2014 to $41.4 million in 2015.

The annual sales and use tax figures for 2015 for Jamestown and Stutsman County showed about a half percent decline compared to 2014.

Jamestown (CSi) Girls of all ages will join their fathers, grandfathers or other male role models out on the dance floor Friday April 15, 216, at Quality Inn & Suites in Jamestown.

Tickets are $20 per couple, $25 at the door. Two additional grandchildren are $5 each.

On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSI Cable 2, Co-Chair of the Relay for Life Event, Mayda Mueller, said The Fifth Annual Father/Daughter/Grandfather Social Event is for couples that include a father and daughter, grandfather and granddaughter or any other couples that include a male role model and a daughter.

Mayda added that some fathers take more than one daughter.

Also on our show, Co-Chair Carlla Maki said that couples of any age are welcome.

Mayda said, that proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Last year, with 216 guests, or 106 couples, the event raised $2,158.

The event is conducted by several community members who have felt the uncertainties cancer can bring to a family, including Carlla and her family.

The grand march, is at 6:30-p.m., where each couple is announced. After the march, couples will stand underneath a decorated arch, where onlookers, such as mothers or other family members and friends, can take photos.

Onlookers can also stay through the first dance of the evening, but are asked to leave after the song has finished.

Cookies, bars and punch will be provided for guests. There will not be alcohol provided at the event.

Mayda pointed out that the event was brought to Jamestown after Mueller heard about a similar event in Fargo and Grand Forks.

Carlla has been involved the past three years.

Attire for the event is semiformal. Girls tend to wear dresses, and it’s common that their dates wear a tie to match their gowns.

Pam Syverson is donating her time to be the disc jockey for the night, with Pit Stop Karaoke, and DiAnn Loper, who is also donating her time and rooms at the Quality Inn & Suites, will be the emcee.

Tickets in advance at Quality Inn & Suites, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Jamestown.

The largest of these was $9,000 awarded to Hi-Line Prairie Gardens and Orchard in Valley City.

Goehring says, “The goals of the North Dakota Community Orchard Project are to increase the production of fruit and nut trees that grow in North Dakota, provide educational opportunities and foster community spirit by bringing people together to plant and tend these orchards.”

The Hi-Line Prairie Gardens and Orchard will convert approximately 4 acres of unused city property in northwest Valley City into an easily accessible outdoor recreation and educational area that is friendly to pollinator species.

CARRINGTON, N.D. (AP) – The man who resigned as Foster County’s state’s attorney earlier this year plans to seek election to the position again.

Paul Murphy stepped down in January. The County Commission said he was asked to resign because of bad legal advice, but Murphy said he quit due to a number of professional and personal reasons.

Murphy says  numerous people in the community have told him they want him back in the state’s attorney’s office. He says he wants to be a leader in the community.

Murphy was first elected state’s attorney in 2002 and was re-elected several times before he resigned.

Cooperstown (CSi) A mediation session has been scheduled May 3, 2016 in a civil case between Griggs County and the County Building Authority over the financial responsibility of the unfinished $3.5 million Griggs County Courthouse/Emergency Operations Center.

The Forum reports, in January, Southeast District Judge Jerod Tufte set a December jury trial in the case. However, he also directed the parties to make a “good faith attempt” at mediation in an effort to avoid a trial.

The two sides had delayed setting a date for mediation as they attempted to negotiate a settlement, according to a joint status report filed with the court last week.

However, those preliminary settlement discussions apparently have broken down.

At its March 18 meeting, the Griggs County Commission rejected a counteroffer from the Building Authority, according to the meeting minutes.

Sanford has two MobileMED units in the oil patch. One is in Watford City and the other sees patients in Underwood and Stanton.

Sanford says the BNSF grant was used to offset startup costs.

Dakotas-based Sanford Health is one of the largest health systems in the nation with 43 hospitals and nearly 250 clinics in nine states and three countries.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot police are investigating robbery attempts at two hotels within 23 minutes, apparently by the same two suspects.

Health Department epidemiologist Sarah Weninger  says the number of confirmed syphilis cases decreased from 51 cases in 2014 to 43 cases in 2015.

She says the reduction last year was seen in females. The number of syphilis cases in men remained at 31 cases.

The number of chlamydia cases in North Dakota also decreased last year.  Health officials say there were 3,191 cases in 2015, down from 3,418 cases in 2014.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota health officials say they’re concerned about a decline in the state’s kindergarten immunization rates.

Immunization surveillance coordinator Lexie Barber says a vaccination rate of 95 percent is recommended for measles, mumps or rubella to maintain herd immunity in schools and prevent cases and outbreaks.  The North Dakota Department of Health says data from the 2015-2016 school assessment indicates the state’s kindergarten MMR vaccine coverage rate is about 87.9 percent.

Barber says low vaccination coverage rates leave North Dakota schools susceptible to outbreaks. She says it’s important to maintain high vaccination rates to ensure that schools are a safe and healthy place for children to learn.

Health officials urge all parents to make sure their children are up to date on immunizations.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – City officials in Williston are working to clear up confusion over how much longer downtown strip clubs can operate.

The City Commission in January restricted all exotic dancing to industrial zones on Williston’s outer fringe.

Heartbreakers attorney Greg Hennessy  says  employees left the January meeting with the impression that the club could continue to offer both topless dancing and alcohol for a year while owners drafted new business plans. But the city sent the club a letter in mid-February setting a three-month deadline.

City Attorney Jordan Evert thinks the 90-day provision was clear, but Mayor Howard Klug acknowledges there’s confusion. City officials have agreed to review recordings of the January meeting to resolve the matter.
