In world and national news…

CHANHASSEN, Minn. (AP) – He was a pop superstar known for his original musical and personal style — and fans are stunned today by news that Prince is dead at the age of 57. His publicist says he was found dead at his home near Minneapolis. Prince became widely known in the 1980s with albums like “1999” and “Purple Rain.” When he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he was hailed as someone who created “a synthesis of black funk and white rock that served as a blueprint for cutting-edge music in the Eighties.”

CHANHASSEN, Minn. (AP) – On Twitter and elsewhere, reaction is pouring in from fans and celebrities following the death of music superstar Prince. Justin Timberlake says, “This can’t be real.” Shaquille O’Neal describes Prince as “another icon gone too soon.” And Whoopi Goldberg, using one of Prince’s own lyrics, wrote, “This is what it sounds like when doves cry.”

UNDATED (AP) – Bernie Sanders is still urging his supporters to press for solutions to problems like wealth inequality and the influence of Wall Street — but he’s offering a more subdued speech after his defeat in New York’s primary. Sanders is back on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania Thursday after losing to Hillary Clinton in Tuesday’s presidential primary in New York. He is only mentioning Clinton in passing, pointing to their differences over trade, fracking and Social Security. He points out that 3 million voters in New York were registered as independents but, in his words, “did not have the right to participate.” He says, “that really is not democracy.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – An Associated Press review finds that most companies and groups that paid for speeches by Hillary Clinton lobbied federal agencies. More than one-third are government contractors. Their interests would follow Clinton to the White House should she win election this fall. Federal records show almost all the 82 corporations, trade associations and other groups that paid for or sponsored Clinton’s speeches have sought to influence the government — by lobbying, bidding on contracts, commenting on federal policy, or contacting State Department officials.

Chicago police say detectives are investigating and that the cab driver was not cited at the scene.
