Jamestown (CSi)   On Friday morning Jamestown Police Department,’s Lt. Robert Opp said the man struck Thursday afternoon while crossing railroad tracks in downtown Jamestown  is identified as 60 year old Dennis Schneider, of Jamestown.  More CSi Photos at Facebook.  On Friday afternoon, he was listed in critical condition at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. That,  according Sanford spokesperson Nadine Aljets.

Earlier Friday,  Jamestown Police had wrapped up its investigation into an accident Thursday, involving a BNSF train and a wheelchair occupant, at the crossing at Second Avenue, East near First Street, in downtown Jamestown.

Jamestown Police Department,’s Lt. Robert Opp said the man is identified as 60 year old Dennis Schneider, of Jamestown.

He was taken from the scene to Jamestown Regional Medical Center, by Jamestown Area Ambulance Service and later life-flighted to a Fargo hospital. His condition was not available.

He was conscious and moving when he was transported by the ambulance service.

The accident occurred in the 1-p.m. hour Thursday.

Lt. Justin Blinsky says the train was westbound, at a relatively low rate of speed when Schneider crossed in front of the train in his wheelchair, and was struck by the train.

Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger says witness reports say Schneider got hung up on the tracks while crossing.

Edinger says Schneider did not use the quiet zone while crossing the rails.

The train came to a stop within about 75 yards just short of the 1st Avenue crossing.

Police Sgt Mann said Thursday that the crossings of 2nd Ave NE, 7th Ave NE, & 3rd St NE were closed to traffic until the investigation was concluded by investigators from BNSF who were on the scene later, Thursday.

BNSF and officials will be looking at the accident to determine if measures can be taken to prevent this from happening in the future.

At 6:45pm, Thursday, Jamestown Police reported that all crossings had been reopened to normal traffic.

Jamestown (CSi) A bone marrow donor registry drive is set for Jamestown on Monday April 25, 2016.

The drive will be from 7:30-a.m., to 1-p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jamestown.

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, spokesperson Doreen Brophy said, the effort is part of the National Marrow Donor Program, aiming to deliver cures to individuals diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancers through marrow transplants.

The process on Monday, is a cheek swab which adds the persons tissue type to the for possible inclusion to the registry. It is NOT a marrow donation at that time.

A health questionaire will also be filled out.

If the individual is deemed eligible they will be contacted with further information.

Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with leukemia or other blood diseases like sickle cell anemia, and a marrow transplant is their only hope.

The age group targeted to be a donor and a potential match, is 18-44 years old.

The donor must meet certain health criteria to become a donor.

 

Bismarck (CSi) — The North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People (NDCHP) is partnering alongside of Surprise Church to provide bags of essential care items to people experiencing homelessness. The movement provides “Mercy Boxes” where people can donate new and unused travel sized personal care items, small pre-packaged snacks, socks, and small first aid supplies. Drop off sites are currently in six cities across the state including Bismarck, Devils Lake, Dickinson, Fargo, Minot and Jamestown. Participating agencies include businesses, non-profits, churches, and health care facilities.

Region VI South Central Homeless Coalition housed in Jamestown is collecting items for this initiative for blessing bags to be used in the Jamestown community.

Collection sites in Jamestown are Stutsman County Housing Authority and Community Options.

North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People, spokesperson Emily Dalzell says, “Over 10,000 people across North Dakota are expected to experience homelessness this year alone, the need has never been greater to be able to actively care for people experiencing homelessness.”

 

(CSi) The Sargent County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a Havana, North Dakota. woman.

Sheri Ann Glover is 45 years old, 5′ with brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen Wednesday morning around 7:30, wearing a black leather hooded jacket, scrubs and purple shoes. Glover has a history of mental illness.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say an inmate has escaped from the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center in Devils Lake.

Jail Director Tom Rime says 29-year-old Kenneth James Eagleman of Fargo escaped Thursday night by breaking off a window grate and using it to smash a window at the facility.

Court records show Eagleman was being held on theft and other charges, including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and fleeing.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Department of Health is investigating a small town volunteer ambulance service after emergency workers incorrectly reported an unresponsive woman as deceased.

Underwood Ambulance responded Saturday afternoon to an Underwood home for a report of an unresponsive female.

McLean County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Richard Johnson says ambulance staff left and called for the coroner.

Johnson says deputies were on scene and saw the woman move and called for the ambulance to come back. The woman was transported to Bismarck, where she died.

Corey Neff, who heads the Underwood Ambulance, declined comment.

McLean County Coroner Ben Gehring says he has never dealt with a previous case where an ambulance staff believed someone was dead when they were not.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Attorney Christopher Myers says a 29-year-old Milwaukee man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor.

Myers says Tyrice Excell Akins pleaded guilty Friday to a three-count Indictment charging him with the sex trafficking charge, transportation of a minor and transportation to engage in prostitution. He also pleaded guilty to possession and distribution of heroin charges out of Wisconsin.

Authorities say the case came to the attention of law enforcement after the North Dakota Highway Patrol pulled over a rental vehicle in which a man was transporting a 17-year-old female from Milwaukee to Bismarck for the purpose of prostitution.

Myers says a subsequent investigation revealed that the man was provided narcotics by Akins in exchange for transporting women to various locations throughout the United States.

 

 

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Home Depot is closing its store in Williston less than three years after it opened and during a downturn of oil-drilling activity in the region.

Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes tells says  the home improvement retailer considers the May 12 closing a “prudent business decision.”

Williston is in the heart of North Dakota’s oil patch. The company opened the Williston store in 2013. At just more than 6,000 square feet in size, it was meant to compliment Home Depot’s full-size store in Minot.

The company says the number of construction projects in oil patch has decreased, while competition has increased. The company says only five people are currently employed at the store. The workers will be offered a severance package or jobs at other locations.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is competing for the Miss Indian World title.

Danielle Ta’Sheena Finn will compete next week at the Gathering of Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Finn grew up in Bismarck and the Porcupine district on Standing Rock. She is a law student at Arizona State University.

Finn competed for the Miss Indian World Title in 2014 and came in as second runner-up.

This year, she will share the story and song of the penny dress. Lakota women in the early 1900s used to wear such a dress to symbolize two worlds: Native and non-Native.

She’s making her own dress adorned with 500 pennies. She says it’s “quite heavy.”

 

In sports…

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State Athletic Director Matt Larsen says the Bison have signed head football coach Chris Klieman to a new six-year contract that will have him coaching through the 2021 season.

Klieman is in his sixth year overall and his third as head coach at North Dakota State.

The school is 28-3 over the past two years, including a 14-2 mark in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the program’s fourth and fifth straight conference and NCAA national championships.

Larsen says he’s extremely confident in the continued growth of North Dakota State’s football program under Klieman’s leadership. Klieman says he’s blessed to have the best job in FCS football.

Klieman had signed a five-year contract in 2014 and accepted a two-year extension in 2015 that ran through the 2020 season.

PIKETON, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say at least eight people have been shot to death in what they’re calling “execution-style killings” in three homes along a rural road in southern Ohio. The state’s attorney general and the Pike County sheriff say all the victims are believed to be members of the same family and include two children. They say there is not an active shooter and no arrests have been made. Pike County is in a predominantly rural Appalachian Mountain region about 80 miles east of Cincinnati.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida’s 24-hour waiting period for abortions has been suspended, while the state Supreme Court considers whether to hear a lawsuit claiming the law is unconstitutional. The Florida chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is suing to overturn the law on behalf of a Gainesville clinic. The group claims the waiting period is causing unnecessary hardship for women seeking abortions.

LONDON (AP) – President Barack Obama says North Carolina’s law that limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay and transgender people is wrong and should be overturned. Obama was asked about the law at a news conference in London after the U.K. put out a travel advisory warning British citizens about possible discrimination if they travel to certain U.S. states. Obama says such laws are the result of strong emotions and politics, but he promises that British visitors will find “extraordinary hospitality” in the U.S.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) – The head of the Republican National Committee says the GOP will not “hand the nomination” to any presidential candidate who fails to win a majority of delegates in the coming weeks. In a speech to RNC members in Florida, party Chairman Reince Priebus (ryns PREE’-bus) says it doesn’t matter how close a candidate comes if he doesn’t claim the necessary 1,237 delegates. Donald Trump has said he should be the nominee if he has the most delegates but falls short.

CANOAS, Ecuador (AP) – Many people living in Ecuador’s earthquake zone continue to sleep outside and are struggling to find food and water as aftershocks continue from Saturday’s magnitude-7.8 quake. Virtually every building in the beach town of Canoas has been turned into rubble, and residents say they are just praying that it doesn’t rain. A powerful magnitude-6.0 quake struck off the coast Thursday night. The death toll has risen to 587.
