Jamestown (CSi) High radon levels are common in homes in Stutsman County, according to an inspector with First Choice Home Inspections.
Darcy Herman, has tested has a radon level that is above what is considered a health risk. The high radon levels are found either in the basement or another part of the house.
He found one home in Jamestown that tested below 4 picocuries.
The average outdoor radon level is 0.4 picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L), according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. An indoor level of 2 pCi/L is a health risk and anything 4 pCi/L or higher is a health hazard.
North Dakota is considered a Zone 1 state, with all counties having a predicted average indoor radon level greater than 4 pCi/L, according to the EPA. The odorless, radioactive gas comes from decaying uranium that seeps out of the ground and is a health risk as a carcinogen when it accumulates inside buildings.
He adds, that Radon abatement can be as simple as a polyethylene sheet
Free radon tests are available to pick up at Central Valley Health Distric in Jamestown.
Free radon kits are also available from the Department of Health. Do-it-yourself radon mitigation videos can be seen at ndhealth.gov under radon.

Bismarck (CSi) North Dakota early childhood service providers work to help shape the lives and futures of the children in their care. In conjunction with Child Care Provider Appreciation Day, the North Dakota Department of Human Services has recognized two licensed early childhood service providers with the Make a Difference Award for their work in enriching the lives of children and families.
KinderKidz, a licensed facility provider in Dickinson, and Shelly Differding, a licensed group provider in Valley City, were selected for this award based on their licensing compliance, commitment to improving program quality, efforts to meet the unique needs of all children in care, and other criteria.
As a licensed child care group provider, Shelly Differding is able to provide care for up to 12 children. She has been licensed since June 1981. Differding has maintained a high level of excellence in licensing compliance for over three decades, and she remains committed to the community and the children and families she serves.
County social service early childhood licensers and child care consultants from Child Care Aware of North Dakota nominated providers for this award.
Eberhardt said there are about 1,600 licensed home, group, and facility child care providers and preschool and school-aged programs in the state, and there is support available to help individuals interested in starting a licensed child care business.
Individuals interested in becoming a licensed child care provider should contact Child Care Aware of North Dakota at 800-997-8515, online at www.ndchildcare.org/, or contact their local county social services office child care licensing unit. County office contact information is online at www.nd.gov/dhs/locations/countysocialserv/.

(CSi) Foster County has declared a fire emergency and burn ban effective immediately.
A release from Foster County Emergency Manager Jess Earle states that the lack of snow and rain combined with warm temperatures and high winds have caused excessive dry down of fuels. This increases the chance of disastrous wild fires that could potentially overwhelm the local Fire Departments resources and cause inordinate equipment wear and damage.
The Foster County Commissioners declared the Burn Ban and Fire Emergency including all of its incorporated cities with the exception for the City of Carrington. The burn restrictions will be in effect until further notice whenever the Fire Danger Rating is “Extreme” or a Red Flag Warning has been issued.
Individuals who violate the burn ban will be guilty of a Class B Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $1,500 and 30 days in jail.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple is asking agency directors to include 10 percent spending reductions in their proposed budgets for the next two years.
The Republican governor’s directive on Wednesday reflects a downturn in tax revenues due to slumping oil prices and activity. The blueprint is the biggest proposed budget decrease for state agencies since Democratic Gov. George Sinner suggested 10 percent reductions in 1992.
North Dakota Budget Director Pam Sharp says Dalrymple’s budget plan is “appropriate and is needed” due to less-than-forecast tax collections.
Dalrymple’s directive marks the beginning of the lengthy job of writing his spending recommendations for the 2017 Legislature. Lawmakers will get Dalrymple’s blueprint in December.
Jamesestown (CSi) – Dist 12 State Representative (D) Jessica Haak responding to the Governor’s bueget cut request says:
Further cuts this will continue to hurt District 12’s working families. Rep. Jessica Haak issued the following statement:
“The lack of leadership and an unwillingness to hold a brief, strictly-focused special legislative session to help reverse the harsh, across-the-board cuts by Governor Dalrymple and the Republican leadership is incredibly disappointing. This reduction impacts nursing homes, hospitals, children who receive therapy services, families who are looking for and need affordable childcare, especially children with special needs, and everyone who pays property taxes. We need solutions that stand up for all North Dakotans, not across-the-board reductions. That’s why we need a special session to seek accountability and target ways to address fiscal challenges without hurting domestic violence survivors, seniors, and hard working North Dakota families.”
MILBANK, S.D. (AP) – Fire has destroyed the Titan Machinery building in the northeastern South Dakota town of Milbank. Police Chief Boyd Van Voren says there were multiple explosions inside the building, and ash from the Wednesday night fire traveled as far as a mile. No injuries were reported. The cause wasn’t immediately determined. Titan Machinery is a dealer of agricultural and construction equipment. The company is based in West Fargo, North Dakota.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police are investigating whether a robbery at a convenience store in Surrey is related to two robberies in nearby Minot.
Authorities say a person wearing a red scarf and wielding a knife held up Barry’s Food and Fuel in Surrey about 10 p.m. Tuesday. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money. No one was hurt.
Surveillance video footage wasn’t clear enough to determine for certain whether the person was a man or a woman.
Minot police are investigating two armed robbery attempts in about two hours early Tuesday, by a male who also was wearing a red scarf and brandishing a knife. The suspect targeted a motel and a convenience store. No injuries were reported in either incident.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – An alleged assault outside of a Williston business led to the arrest of five people on drug and other charges.
John Cameron Jr. is accused of using a device “similar to brass knuckles” to attack a man in a Wal-Mart parking lot last week. The man needed stiches on his head.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the incident that led to searches of two residences that police say turned up drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Cameron faces a felony aggravated assault charge along with drug charges. He could face up to 16 years in prison if convicted. Court documents don’t list an attorney for him, and a home telephone listing couldn’t be found.
Four others face charges ranging from conspiracy to drug possession.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Republican U.S. Sen. John Hoeven and GOP Gov. Jack Dalrymple say they are not endorsing a candidate for president, even though Donald Trump is now the party’s presumptive nominee.
Spokesmen for Hoeven and Dalrymple say the men will likely support whomever the GOP endorses at the party’s convention in Cleveland in July.
Dalrymple and his wife, Betsy, are among the state’s 28 national delegates.
Republican U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer endorsed Trump at the state GOP convention last month in Fargo.
Trump has been tabbed as the keynote speaker for the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference that will be held later this month in Bismarck.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp has said she supports Hillary Clinton for president.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An oil industry group says Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has been tabbed as the keynote speaker for the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference that will be held later this month in Bismarck. The conference is scheduled May 24-26 at the Bismarck Event Center. North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness says Trump is slated to speak at 1 p.m. on May 26.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the North Dakota University System did not violate the state’s open records laws in dealing with a request from the system’s former chief auditor.
Stenehjem says the nine days it took to meet the request was a reasonable amount of time.
The request for records came from Timothy Carlson. He was put on paid administrative leave in November 2014 for allegedly providing misleading information about his work experience and credentials. In January 2015 he signed a separation agreement with the University System.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Department of Transportation says the majority of load restrictions will be lifted on Thursday for the state’s highways.
State transportation officials say the majority of restrictions will be lifted at 7 a.m. CDT Thursday. Officials urge motorists to check current load restrictions to determine which load restrictions remain in effect.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – A homeless shelter is set to open in Devils Lake, after months of planning and development.
The Lake Region Community Shelter opens Friday. An open house is planned Thursday evening.
Organizer Karen Nick says she started the shelter effort when she began to notice signs of homelessness in Devils Lake.
The plan is to create a referral-based service utilizing the aid of several organizations in the city, including a human service center, a church-based charity and the police department. The shelter itself is inside an existing food pantry.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott says he thought he had more time to right the ship before the team fired him last week.
Scott tells ESPN he was “surprised” and “shocked” by the move even though he led the Lakers to the two worst seasons in their history, including this season’s franchise-worst 17-65 mark.
In an interview broadcast Wednesday on CSI Cable 14, ESPN’s “The Jump with Rachel Nichols,” Scott explained that Lakers brass had told him a few years ago that a long-term rebuilding process was needed for the team. He says he figured he had at least another year to turn things around when he was suddenly let go.
The former Lakers player says he’ll continue to root for the team and offered a vote of confidence for new coach Luke Walton.
MIAMI (AP) – The Miami Heat and center Chris Bosh have announced that he will sit out the remainder of the playoffs, ending rampant speculation in recent days that Bosh would try to return to the court.
Bosh has not played since the All-Star break after a blood clot was discovered in his left leg. It remains unknown if he has dealt with any other clots or if he remains on blood thinners.

In world and national news…
NEW YORK (AP) – A proposal coming today from the nation’s top consumer financial regulator would give account-holders of all kinds another weapon in disputes with the banks or other institutions. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau wants to ban mandatory arbitration clauses, which would affect the entire financial industry and the hundreds of millions of bank accounts, credit cards and mortgages that Americans use. Now, U.S. bank customers have mostly signed away their right to sue their bank.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida’s Supreme Court is to hear oral arguments today in a case that’s literally life-and-death for hundreds of prison inmates. The hearing comes in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that found Florida’s system of sentencing people to death unconstitutional because it gives too much power to judges. The court will decide if nearly 400 death row inmates get reduced sentences of life in prison.
BAGHDAD (AP) – The breach of Baghdad’s highly fortified Green Zone by protesters has cost an Iraqi military commander his job. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi (HY’-dahr ahl ah-BAH’-dee) replaced Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ridha, whose job was to protect the zone. On Saturday hundreds of protesters, mainly followers of Iraq’s influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr (mook-TAH’-duh ahl SAH’-dur), knocked down concrete blast walls and broke into the parliament building while security forces stood idle.
NEW YORK (AP) – Workers living in New York City who also have caregiving responsibilities at home now have a stronger safety net. A new law has taken effect to protect employees from termination, demotion, or denial of promotion because of their status as a family caregiver. If the law is broken, the worker could recover lost wages or damages. The mayor calls family caregivers “unsung heroes.”
MINETTO, N.Y. (AP) – A teacher in central New York faces charges of harassment and endangering the welfare of child after allegedly dragging a disruptive second-grader to the principal’s office and throwing the boy over a counter. Sean Fitzgerald has been placed on leave pending further investigation. He’s due in court later this month. The boy wasn’t injured.
