Smoke from a wildfire that’s raging in western Canada might impact North Dakotans.
 
     National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Abeling says the smoke has remained aloft in the atmosphere above the state, but changing winds could bring it to the surface.
 
     The fires near Fort McMurray, Alberta, have forced more than 80,000 people from their homes. Officials say no deaths or injuries related to the fire have been reported.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Fire Department was called about 4:20-p.m., Thursday to 1507 11th Avenue Northeast.

A deck fire was reported.

City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says, some damage was reported to the deck, and no damage to the structure.

He says the fire was caused by discarded smoking materials.

No injuries reported with six city fire units and 26 fire fighters on the scene until 4:41 p.m.

The damage estimate was between $500 and $600.

 

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. The Forum reports a Jamestown man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexual contact with a 10-year-old girl.

37 year old Paul Frederick Cross, was charged in December in Ramsey County District Court with gross sexual imposition, a Class A felony, after inappropriately touching and exposing himself to the victim in 2012

He faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine for the felony, but he was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison and nine years of supervised probation. Cross must serve one year in prison before he can be considered to start the nine years of probation.

Cross was given credit for five days served. He must also pay $535 in fees.

 

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Police is warning residents regarding a convicted sex offender who has again changed his Jamestown address.

35 year old Jamal Joel Anderson now resides at 621 5th Street, NW, Jamestown ND

He presently has no vehicle.

Anderson is a black male, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds with brown eyes and black hair.

Anderson has been assigned a High Risk Assessment by the North Dakota Risk Level Committee of the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office.

Anderson’s conviction include in 1999 aggravated assault, and sexual assault, and in 2001 corruption of a minor and violated a sex offender registration requirement.

Anderson is currently on probation with North Dakota Parole and Probation.

Anderson is on GPS monitoring.

Anderson is not wanted by police at this time and has served the sentence imposed by the court.

This notification is meant for public safety and not to increase fear in the community, nor should this information be used to threaten, assault, or intimidate the offender.

Any attempts to harass, intimidate or threaten these offenders, their families, landlords, or employers will be turned over for prosecution.

Jamestown (CSi) The sixth year of Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)  was held at the Jamestown High School on Thursday.

Stutsman County Emergency Manager Jerry Bergquist says, Students participating utilized newly-learned CERT skills under the direction of local emergency response agencies and school staff, and because of the large amount of students, there were two separate exercises and graduation ceremonies. at the Jamestown High School Gymnasium.

Participating were 103 students from the freshmen class.

Students acted as the responders to a mock bleacher collapse scenario with JHS drama students acting as victims.

All current students at Jamestown High School have participated in the exercise in the past.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is hosting a Community Service of Remembrance on Monday, May 16, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Ave Maria Village, 501 19th Street NE in Jamestown. Anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one, either recently or in years past is invited to come and share in this informal service honoring the memory of our loved ones in a supportive atmosphere.

Dr. Alan Wolfelt, internationally know expert and author in the field of grief and loss writes: “In my experience, remembering the past makes hoping for the future possible. Your future will become open to new experiences only to the extent that you embrace the past.” Many people who are grieving the loss of a loved one feel very alone in their grief. The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is committed to offering support and companioning to those who are grieving. Team members endeavor to provide a listening ear and a variety of ways for individuals to share their feelings about their loss.

Jamestown (CSi) The American Red Cross has added an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) to the Jamestown to support the city and nearby communities in Stutsman, Barnes, Foster, Griggs and LaMoure counties during emergencies.

The vehicle contains blankets, water, snacks and toiletry kits for the comfort of clients Red Cross volunteers serve. Diapers, formula and plush toys are also available for infants and children. During an extended response, volunteers are also prepared to support the needs of first responders.

 

Jamestown (CSi) North Dakota First Lady Betsy Dalrymple will be in Jamestown May 13th in celebration of Imagination Library in the community.

She will be reading to preschool children at the Jamestown Middle School to help celebrate. The Imagination Library has provided books to over 500 children between the ages of 0 to 5 every month.

Imagination Library was brought to Jamestown around three years ago and all day-care providers have been invited to attend along with parents to help celebrate reading.

Also reading will be Superintendent Rob Lech, Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen, and retired teacher Alaine Toso.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota attorney general says the school board in Kensal violated open meetings laws by failing to give notice and take minutes for two committee meetings.

The board had created one committee to explore the possibility of a merger with neighboring Midkota and another group to gather financial information on such a merger.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the board did not file notice or record minutes for either meeting because it was not familiar with state law.

Stenehjem ordered committee members to create meeting minutes detailing their recollection of discussions with other committee members.

Cooperstown (CSi) The Grand Forks Herald reports that three Griggs County Building Authority members will resign after a settlement in the dispute over an unfinished courthouse and emergency operations center was reached.

The Griggs County Commission and Building Authority agreed to drop civil lawsuits against each other. The decision was reached during a mediation session according to County Commissioner John Wakefield.

As part of the agreement, three members of the Building Authority will resign. They will be replaced by members of the County Commission, which then will hold a majority on the five-member authority.

 

 

BEULAH, N.D. (AP) – A corrections officer in Mercer County has pleaded not guilty to shooting up a Beulah hotel with an AR-15 rifle.
 
     Twenty-six-year-old Hazen resident Michael Peterson is charged with attempted murder and reckless endangerment in the Feb. 27 incident.
 
     He entered his pleas on Thursday. A trial date was not immediately scheduled. He could face up to 60 years in prison if convicted.
 
     Peterson allegedly fired the rifle 32 times after a night of drinking at a bar in the hotel, according to a police affidavit. No one was hurt.
 
     Peterson is out on bond. Court documents show he entered an in-patient substance abuse program in late March and was scheduled for discharge in late April.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man accused of distributing large quantities of methamphetamine in Fargo and in Sisseton, South Dakota, says he will plead guilty.
 
     Roble Hernandez is charged in federal court with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years.
 
     Authorities say Hernandez’s residence in Fargo was being used as a “stash house” for an out-of-state drug trafficking organization. A woman who lived with Hernandez had allegedly stolen five pounds of meth and members of the cartel came to Fargo and assaulted her to gain information about the missing drugs.
 
     Court documents show that meth was also distributed in Minnesota and Arizona.
 
     A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The attorney for a flight attendant accused of disrupting SkyWest flights in the upper Midwest and on the East Coast last year is seeking another delay.
 
     Michelle Monteiro wants more time to prepare. She’s seeking a delay of at least two months for the early June trial of Justin Cox-Sever.
 
     The Arizona man is accused of making bogus bomb threats on a flight from Charlottesville, Virginia, to Chicago, and on a flight from Minneapolis to Dickinson, North Dakota. He was to stand trial in North Dakota in late February, but it was delayed until early April and then until June.
 
     A third delay could give attorneys more time to hammer out a plea agreement. A federal prosecutor and court documents indicate the case is unlikely to go before a jury.

 

 DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – The owner of a taxicab company in Devils Lake is taking issue with the inclusion of a “moral character” clause in the city’s updated taxi licensing ordinance.
 
     Katie Linjatie says drivers should be licensed if they pass a drug test and have a clean criminal record. She says including “good moral character” as a required condition gives the police chief power to deny anyone a license.
 
     Police Chief Keith Schroeder says the moral character language isn’t unique to Devils Lake. He says other cities including Jamestown, Grand Forks, Fargo and Mandan also have it.
 
     Schroeder says officials would have to “demonstrate specifically” how someone was not of good moral character to deny a license.
 
     The  City Commission this week unanimously adopted the updated ordinance.

 

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – American Indian tribes in North Dakota plan to band together and seek state funding to promote tourism on reservations.
 
     Turtle Mountain Tourism Association Vice Chairman Les Thomas says tribes want visitors to North Dakota to experience the whole state, including Native American culture.
 
     Tribal leaders and state and federal officials are meeting at the North Dakota Native Tourism Summit in Bismarck, with the goal of forming a tribal tourism association. It would be an affiliate of the national American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association.
 
     Bureau of Indian Affairs tourism specialist Ed Hall says the opportunity for tribes is “tremendous.” He says the influx of dollars would make businesses on reservations more sustainable and boost tribal economies.

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot’s new $43 million airport terminal is being officially dedicated.
 
     A ceremony is scheduled Friday afternoon at the facility that went into operation in late February.
 
     Passenger numbers in Minot have surged in recent years, along with the western oil boom. The new terminal can handle about 300,000 annual boardings – triple the number of the old facility.
 
     The new terminal has six gates, four jet bridges, state-of-the-art monitors and boarding areas, a sports bar-style restaurant and a play area for children.

(CSi)  Jamestown and Valley City, Firday and Saturday are hosting the 2016 North Star Athletic Association baseball tournament,  at  Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown and Charlie Brown Field in Valley City.

Valley City will host the first two days of Bracket A and then the semifinals move to Jamestown on Sunday. 

Bellevue is the top-seed and the No. 2 team in the latest NAIA Top-25. The Bruins have already secured a spot in the national tournament. If they win Bracket A, the Bracket B champion lock down the conference’s other automatic bid. If Bellevue doesn’t win Bracket A, the winner of Monday’s championship will get the auto bid.

Jamestown is already in the national tournament as a host school for the opening round. If the Jimmies win Bracket B that would make the NSAA only a two-bid league, but if someone else wins it the conference would get three teams in.

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota fisheries personnel recently stocked more than 40 ponds and lakes with catchable with catchable trout, catfish and pike.
 
     Jerry Weigel with the state Game and Fish Department says about 23,000 rainbow trout, 800 adult catfish, 750 pike and 600 cutthroat trout were recently stocked in rural and city ponds and lakes.
 
     Weigel says the state’s fisheries are at historic highs, but many are not as easily accessible to children, older adults and disabled anglers.
 
     He says the stockings are “a great opportunity for a first-time angler to catch fish.”

 

 ELLENDALE, N.D. (AP) – Trinity Bible College in Ellendale has hired a new football coach.
 
     Darren Jackson was an assistant coach at University Christian School in Jacksonville, Florida. He helped coach that team to a 2A Florida state championship.
 
     Jackson played collegiately at Liberty University in Virginia. After graduating, he spent one year as an assistant at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia, and three years at The Apprentice School in Newport News, Virginia.

 

 DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – Five barrel racers on the Dickinson State University rodeo team will be featured on a prime-time network TV show.
 
     DSU says Sadie Gjermundson, Skye Schaper, Teddi Schwagler, Cassie Kohenhoffer and Kit Miller will be filmed for a rodeo segment on the “Red Nose Day Special.”
 
     The special will air at 8 p.m. Central time Thursday, May 26th, on NBC. It’s about Red Nose Day, a special day aimed at raising awareness about and money for poverty-stricken children.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) – NASCAR has decided that Talladega Superspeedway won’t be an elimination race in next year’s championship Chase.
 
     The Alabama track swapped its date with Kansas Speedway in the most significant change to the 2017 schedule released Thursday.
 
     Talladega had been the third race in the second round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship to the frustration of many drivers. The race is often unpredictable and drivers didn’t like their title chances depending on that event.
 
     The track hosted last Sunday’s race, which was marred by several multi-car accidents. In all, 35 cars were involved in wrecks.
 
     In 2017, Talladega will become the second race in the Round of 12 and be held on October 15th. Kansas becomes the third and final race in that round, on October 22nd.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Steve Wheatcroft and Andrew Loupe each shot 7-under 65 to share the first-round lead in the PGA’s Wells Fargo Championship. Playing partners Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler endured a bizarre event on the sixth tee box when a spectator hurled a dressed-up golf ball their way as Fowler was preparing to hit. The fan was escorted from the property by police.

 RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks have placed Marshawn Lynch on the NFL’s reserve/retired list after the running back indicated in February that he was ready to end his football career. Lynch concluded his career with 9,112 yards rushing and 74 touchdowns in the regular season, and another nine TDs in the playoffs. The Seahawks will save $6.5 million with Lynch’s retirement.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The lead super PAC backing Democrat Hillary Clinton is planning to unleash a relentless ad campaign against Donald Trump. Priorities USA has already reserved $91 million in television advertising that will start next month and continue through Election Day. So far, no one else has anything that ambitious. The group’s strategy is to test Trump’s ability to shake off waves of attack ads. Trump is still being rebuked by fellow Republicans, even as he promises party unity.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – Riders of Washington’s Metro commuter rail system could be getting grim news today. Metro’s general manager is set to announce how he’ll address systemic maintenance shortcomings on the beleaguered subway system. Paul Wiedefeld has said partial closures of the system will be necessary to return it to a state of good repair.
 
     SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) – Authorities in central New York say it appears six members of one family have been killed in a house fire in a residential neighborhood on the north side of Syracuse. Officials say firefighters were attempting to enter the front of the burning two-story home when the porch roof collapsed, forcing them to retreat. Firefighters later found the bodies. A seventh person was able to escape and is hospitalized.
 
     FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta (AP) – Eighty-thousand people have already made emptied out from wildfire-ravaged Fort McMurray in Canada’s Alberta province and thousands are expected to be moving yet again today as part of a continuing mass airlift. Canadian officials also plan a road convoy of evacuees if conditions allow it. Fire officials say only significant rain will help firefighters.
 
     HPAKANT, Myanmar (AP) – There’s been another slide of a huge mound of mining waste in Myanmar and a hospital says at least 13 people have been killed. The accident occurred in the center of Myanmar’s lucrative jade mining territory. Jade is mined with heavy equipment that leaves behind small pieces in waste soil that is piled into huge mounds. People risk slides when they scavenge the pieces.
