Valley City (CSi) A free car seat checkup will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 3-p.m. to 6-pm at theEssentia Health west parking lot in Valley City.

Certified child passenger safety technicians will answer questions and assist parents and caregivers in proper use and installation of their car seats. The checkup is sponsored by the North Dakota Department of Health and City-County Health District in Valley City.

Car seats will be checked to be sure they are appropriate for the child who is riding in them and that the seats are not recalled or expired. Technicians will assist families with installation of the seat, using either the LATCH system or the seat belt.

Guidance will be given on how to correctly secure the child in the car seat, including how tight the harness should be, which harness slots should be used and correct positioning of the harness clip.

Each car seat check will take about 30 minutes. Parents should bring the car seat instructions and their vehicle owner’s manual. Although not necessary, it helps to have the child present, so he/she can be fitted to the seat.

For more information about the checkup contact City-County Health District office in Valley City at 701-845-8518

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The family of a North Dakota college student who was a confidential informant for a drug task force has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
The body of 20-year-old Andrew Sadek was found about two years ago in the Red River, which separates North Dakota from Minnesota, not far from where he attended college in Wahpeton. He died of a gunshot wound to the head.
John and Tammy Sadek filed a civil complaint Monday against Richland County Sheriff’s deputy Jason Weber and the county. The suit seeks unspecified damages.
The suit says the defendants, including Weber, who was part of the task force, failed to train Andrew Sadek to perform undercover operations or to “reasonably supervise” him.
A spokeswoman for the North Dakota attorney general’s office was not immediately available comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck man accused of stabbing another man has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.

Twenty-eight-year-old Nigel Wakefield is accused of stabbing the man Feb. 1 after being kicked out of a business for disturbing customers. Police Officer Mike Renton testified during a Monday hearing that the victim suffered a wound to his neck.

Wakefield underwent a psychological evaluation in May and was declared fit for trial. South Central District Judge Sonna Anderson scheduled a four-day trial to begin Dec. 6. Wakefield faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A 31-year-old Oklahoma man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for selling drugs in the North Dakota oil patch.

Timothy Sumpter, of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, pleaded guilty in March to a federal charge of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

Authorities say a traffic stop near Bowman in March 2014 yielded about two pounds of methamphetamine and a half-pound of heroin that had been transported from California. Sumpter was one of three people in the vehicle.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland says Sumpter must serve five years of supervised release when he finishes his prison term.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A 19-year-old Williston man who faced 45 charges in connection with a string of break-ins and thefts has been sentenced to serve four years in prison.

Jayde Sundheim was accused of breaking into vehicles, garages and apartments and stealing everything from guns to drugs.

Sundheim pleaded guilty in March to theft, burglary and drug possession and was sentenced Monday. He’ll be on probation for three years following his prison term.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota farmers saw a variety of weather conditions affect crops in the last week, from heavy rain and flooding in the northwestern part of the state to continued dry weather in southwestern areas.

The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that many areas of the state also experienced storms and windy conditions that resulted in some crop damage.

The report says topsoil moisture supplies were rated 88 percent adequate to surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 78 percent adequate to surplus. Pasture and range conditions statewide are rated 56 percent good to excellent and stock water supplies are 82 percent adequate to surplus.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The company that wanted to build the Keystone XL pipeline is seeking $15 billion in damages from the federal government after the Obama administration rejected the Canada-to-Texas project.

TransCanada Inc. filed a request for arbitration Friday, arguing that the decision violated the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The pipeline would have carried 830,000 barrels of crude oil per day from Hardisty, Alberta, in Canada to Steele City, Nebraska, where it would have connected to existing pipelines running south to Gulf Coast refineries.

A spokesman for the Canadian developer says the November rejection was “arbitrary and unjustified.” The company also argued in its filing that the administration rejected the project to bolster its environmental credentials.

A State Department spokesman said the agency doesn’t comment on pending litigation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Supreme Court justices have heard arguments in a dispute over a Minot bank expansion.

Some people who live near First Western Bank & Trust say the business has received special treatment from the city in connection with a major expansion.

More than a dozen neighbors sued last year after the City Council granted variances to the bank to reduce its required parking in association with the building addition. A judge dismissed the case last August and upheld his decision in January, and the neighbors appealed to the Supreme Court.

Justices heard oral arguments on Monday. They took the case under advisement and will issue a ruling later.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Historical Society must use money from its own budget to pay private attorneys to defend against a lawsuit.

Wahpeton-based Comstock Construction Inc. alleges in court documents that the agency owes it nearly $1.5 million in damages and unpaid bills for its work on the North Dakota Heritage Center. The company has requested a jury trial.

The agency says it withheld payment to the company because the company still has not finished some work.

The State Historical Board in April voted to retain Serkland Law Firm in Fargo.
