Jamestown Airport Manager Sam Seafeldt said the Piper Malibu landed without incident.

Seafeldt said the pilot reported the smoke from the engine, and some smoke in the cabin.

When the plane landed reports did not indicate a fire, and the pilot and a passenger left the plane.

Reportedly the engine had been previously replaced.

Seafedlt said there was no evidence of fire, however there was evidence of a vacuum pump failure in the engine, that likely caused the smoke to occur.

No injuries reported to the pilot or the passenger.

Seafeldt said the plane belongs to a Fargo business and was enroute from Dickinson to Fargo when the incident occurred.

He added that there was no fire damage detected by a mechanic, and the plane, after circling the airport three times, then continued its flight to Fargo.

Jamestown City Fire Department Lt. Sheldon Mohr says all fire fighters were called to the station, and four units were on standby at the airport. He said there was no visible fire coming from the plane or the engine.

The JFD remained on the scene to make sure no flames had subsequently erupted.

He indicated that the airport’s Fire and Rescue unit, stationed at the airport was on scene,  consisting of airport personnel and city fire fighers.

Mohr said the city fire units returned to the station about 2:15 p.m.

(Jamestown  CSi)  – The worsening farm economy prompted National Farmers Union (NFU) leaders to call for action that will minimize the continued decline in farm income. Average net farm income in North Dakota dropped from $76,404 in 2014 to $28,600 in 2015, a 63 percent decline.

“We called for corrective action and evaluation of price support levels, including an increase in price supports or economic disaster declarations, so that farm programs serve their purpose of stabilizing farm income during low commodity cycles,” said North Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne, who helped draft the resolution to that affect at a meeting of NFU state presidents in Healdsburg, Calif., earlier this week.

Watne said low farm prices are predicted to continue for the next several years, which will present challenges to the survival of family farms and rural communities. He said net farm income is projected to be down by 3 percent this year, putting net farm income at its lowest level since 2002.

“When family farmers and ranchers struggle to pay their bills, the impact reverberates through communities,” he said. “It also spurs consolidation in agricultural sectors, ultimately reducing the price farmers receive for their commodities due to reduced competition.”

Farmers Union is urging family farmers and ranchers to call on public officials and candidates for office at local, state and national levels to make them aware of the economic condition in the countryside.

“Family farmers and ranchers who provide the food, fuel and fiber for the country deserve financial security and a farm safety net that enables them to remain on the farm and pass it on to future generations,” said Watne.

Jamestown (CSi) North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) has announced that members are now eligible to receive a 10 percent discount off most retail health aid products at Thrifty White pharmacies across the state.

NDFU president, Mark Watne says, “We’re excited to be partnering with this well-known regional chain to offer discounts to our members. Thrifty White is an employee-owned company that has provided reliable service to rural America for generations.”
NDFU members are also eligible for a 10 percent discount off health aids when they shop online at theonlinedrugstore.com. To receive the discount in store or online, members need to present their membership card at checkout or enter it online. The discount does not apply to diabetic test strips or prescription medication.

MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol has released the name of the truck trailer driver who died in a crash on an Interstate 94 exit ramp near Medora.

Authorities identified the driver on Friday as 64-year-old Belfield resident Louis Lindbo.

Authorities say Lindbo failed to negotiate a curve as he was exiting the interstate Wednesday. The vehicle tipped onto its side, traveled through the guardrail just before the I-94 overpass and came to rest upside down.

The Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota has its first confirmed human case of West Nile virus this year.

The state Department of Health on Friday said the case involves a Grand Forks County woman in her 30s. The patient was not hospitalized because of the illness.

The department last year counted 23 people who tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus. Of those, eight were hospitalized and one died.

State epidemiologist Laura Cronquist is encouraging people to wear mosquito repellent when outdoors during the evening between dusk and dawn.

The virus symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and rash. The department says that most people infected with the virus develop the less severe form of the disease or experience no symptoms at all.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Less than two months after law enforcement authorities met in Fargo to discuss an onslaught of opiate overdoses, the number of arrests for dealing drugs is going up and the number of overdose deaths is going down.

About 10 suspected drug dealers in the Fargo area have been indicted in federal court since the May 12 meeting to discuss the drug epidemic that has resulted in 10 overdose deaths this year in eastern North Dakota.

Fargo police say the number of critical overdose calls has declined in the last two months, down to just three in June.

In addition to targeting drug dealers, authorities say getting out information about treatment options and the increased availability of a drug that temporarily reverses the effects of opioid overdose have been key.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Members of North Dakota’s federal delegation say the state’s first Department of Veterans Affairs national cemetery will be established in Cass County.

The new national cemetery announced Friday is expected to serve roughly 24,400 veterans, their spouses and family members in a 75-mile radius of Fargo.

Republican U.S. Sen. John Hoeven says the agency purchased 4.82 acres of land in Cass County for the national cemetery. He says North Dakota residents have a “long and proud tradition” of serving in the military.

GOP U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer says the move is good news for North Dakota veterans and their families. He says it is a great tribute to veterans heading into the Fourth of July weekend.

North Dakota has a state-operated veterans cemetery in Mandan.

Update…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota parents who are behind on their child support payments are getting more time to catch up.

The Child Support Division of the Department of Human Services is again granting amnesty and returning suspended driver’s licenses to anyone who sets up a payment plan. For every $2 a person pays toward past-due support, the agency will credit $1 toward accrued interest or money owed to the state.

The project was started in June and has been extended through July.

The agency says $259 million is owed in past-due support.

The agency says more than 2,000 North Dakotans have their driver’s licenses suspended for failing to pay child support, and more than 600 have warrants for their arrest.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A new downtown Fargo venue housed in a former Lutheran church is open for events such as concerts and weddings.

The owners kept intact a significant amount of the building’s history during the remodel. The Sanctuary Events Center is in the former St. Mark’s Lutheran Church building.

General Manager Richard Pallay III says organizers want the new events center to be an open and uplifting place.

In world and national news…

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) – As many as nine gunmen have attacked a restaurant in the capital of Bangladesh that is popular with foreigners. It’s in a diplomatic zone in Dhaka. Authorities say the gunmen have taken hostages, and they’ve exchanged gunfire with security forces. Some foreigners are believed to be among the hostages. The State Department says the U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh has accounted for all of the U.S. citizens who are under the authority of the diplomatic chief of mission there. A department spokesman says it’s too early to say who’s involved in the assault.

DENVER (AP) – Donald Trump says Bill Clinton’s meeting this week with Attorney General Loretta Lynch has “opened up a Pandora’s box.” Trump told a gathering of conservatives in Denver Friday that the meeting “shows what’s happening with our laws, with our government.” He added, “Hillary is so guilty.” Lynch said Friday she understands that the impromptu meeting with Bill Clinton aboard her plane “cast a shadow” over the public perception of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email account.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Hillary Clinton begins this month with $44 million in cash to continue hammering Donald Trump in the race for the White House. Clinton raised $40.5 million in June. Her campaign announced the fundraising numbers Friday. She’s spent far more than Trump building a voter contact operation and beginning to advertise ahead of the November election. Trump has not disclosed his June fundraising numbers. One recent email solicitation claimed that he raised $11 million in a few days.

DENVER (AP) – Donald Trump says it’s a device he’s “starting to love.” He’s talking about teleprompters — and he was using one Friday in Denver at the Western Conservative Summit. Trump has repeatedly mocked other politicians for using teleprompters, and joked during the primaries that anyone running for president should be barred from using them. But he’s increasingly turned to delivering speeches from prepared remarks in recent weeks as he’s tried to professionalize his once-unscripted campaign.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Friday night’s Mega Millions drawing will give lottery players a shot at the 10th largest jackpot in U.S. history. Because no one has won a Mega Millions jackpot since March 8, the prize has steadily grown to an estimated $415 million. That makes it the largest jackpot since a $430 million Powerball prize won by a New Jersey family May 7. The record prize was a $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot won in January by players in three states.
