Update…

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say an ornate prize belt that has been awarded to some of the America’s top professional athletes has been stolen from a museum in North Dakota. Fargo Deputy Chief Joe Anderson says a burglar broke into the Roger Maris Museum on Tuesday and smashed a glass display case holding the Hickok Belt. The belt was founded in 1950 and has been awarded to athletes including Muhammed Ali, Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle.

Police said the investigation was ongoing and determined later in the day that Maris’ 1960 American League Most Valuable Player plaque also was missing.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple has signaled that $100 million may be taken from Bank of North Dakota profits to help address shortfalls to the state treasury.

Dalrymple has called a special session of the North Dakota Legislature to address a $310 million budget shortfall due to low oil and farm commodity prices.

Dalrymple and Republican legislative leaders have not given specifics on how to solve the budget problem when the Legislature returns next week for a three-day special session.

But the governor on Tuesday hinted that about a third of the shortfall may come from the state-owned bank. He didn’t elaborate during the meeting at the state Industrial Commission, which he chairs.

Bank president Eric Hardmeyer told the governor that the bank is “extremely strong, capital-wise.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A new housing study predicts North Dakota’s population will grow to 891,000 people by 2029.

North Dakota Housing Finance Agency Executive Director Jolene Kline told the state Industrial Commission on Tuesday that the 20 percent population increase will continue to put pressure on affordable housing for low-income residents.

Kline told the panel that North Dakota’s economy is still strong, despite a downturn in oil and crop prices.

The state Housing Finance Agency commissioned the study done by North Dakota State University researchers. The study says North Dakota’s urban centers will see the most growth.

Kline says the region that includes Jamestown and Valley City is the only area where the population is predicted to decline by 2029.  She says the Devils Lake area is forecast to remain flat.

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Attendance at this year’s Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo was down about 12 percent from last year.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple has appointed Air National Guard Brig. Gen. Robert Becklund to the position of deputy adjutant general.

Becklund replaces Maj. Gen. Alan Dohrmann, whom Dalrymple appointed late last year to serve as the state’s adjutant general, succeeding the retired Dave Sprynczynatyk (sprihn-suh-NAT’-ihk).

Becklund currently serves as executive director of the North Dakota Northern Plains Unmanned Aircraft Systems Test Site, and as chief of staff for the North Dakota Air National Guard.
