MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Trial has been delayed for Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski, who faces misdemeanor charges in the death of an inmate.

Kukowski was to stand trial beginning Aug. 29 on charges of refusing to perform a public duty and reckless endangerment in the October 2014 death of 25-year-old jail inmate Dustin Irwin.

Prosecutor Seymour Jordan on Thursday requested a delay, and Judge Lolita Romanick granted a continuance until Oct. 3.

Romanick also denied a request by defense attorney Peter Welte (WEHL’-tee) to dismiss the charges against Kukowski.

Kukowski is on paid suspension. He is awaiting a decision by a special commissioner on whether his due process rights were violated when Gov. Jack Dalrymple suspended him.

Kukowski maintains his innocence.

KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) – Killdeer school officials are dealing with more than $1 million in storm damage as they prepare for the start of fall classes. A July 10 hail storm that town officials have said was one of the worst local disasters in memory damaged school buildings, buses and even the football field. Superintendent Gary Wilz says Friday night football games might have to be rescheduled until the field’s 60 lights can be replaced.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Pennsylvania steel company named in a lawsuit over a train derailment near Casselton more than two years ago wants the case moved from state to federal court.

An engineer who was at the helm of the BNSF train when it derailed in December 2013 is accusing Standard Steel of manufacturing a faulty axle that led to the accident.

The original suit filed last year by Bryan Thompson, of Fargo, only named BNSF. An amended complaint filed last month added Standard Steel as a defendant.

A National Transportation Safety Board investigation did not pinpoint the broken axle as the cause of the crash, but the NTSB ordered the industry to recall 43 axles made by Standard Steel.

A lawyer for Standard Steel did not respond to messages seeking comment.

MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – As the National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary, visitation at Theodore Roosevelt National Park is up more than 33 percent from last year.

The Medora Musical in the Burning Hills Amphitheatre in the Badlands also has seen a surge in visitors. This season is shaping up to be second-biggest for the musical, which is in its 51st summer season.

In world and national news…

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Hillary Clinton and running mate Tim Kaine are starting their bus tour of a pair of battleground states. The Democratic presidential nominee said during a kickoff rally in Philadelphia that the tour through critical Pennsylvania and Ohio will stop at “places that make things.” And she took a dig at her GOP rival, saying Donald Trump “doesn’t make anything in America except bankruptcies.” Clinton pledged that her first 100 days in office would see the biggest investment in new jobs since World War II. She said it would focus on infrastructure, technology, clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

ARCATA, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say searchers have found the wreckage of a small medical transport plane in remote Northern California and that at least two people are dead. A pilot was taking a flight nurse, a transport medic and a patient from Crescent City, near the Oregon border, to Oakland. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately release information about the fates of the other two people aboard. Rescue teams found the crash site on land owned by a private timber company about 280 miles north of San Francisco. Officials say the pilot reported smoke filling the cockpit and declared an emergency around 1 a.m.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A White House spokesman says Florida needs more federal money to limit the spread of the Zika virus. The spokesman says Friday’s announcement that South Florida has four mosquito-transmitted cases should be a wake-up call for Congress “to get back to work.” Congress left on a seven-week vacation without giving the Obama administration any of the $1.9 billion it sought for mosquito control, vaccine development and other steps to battle Zika.

SAN DIEGO (AP) – San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman says a “potential” second suspect in the fatal shooting of an officer and wounding of another is in a house that is surrounded. Zimmerman says the first suspect is in custody, hospitalized in critical condition with a gunshot wound. The shooting occurred late Thursday night when two uniformed gang suppression officers reported they were making a stop – but the chief says it’s uncertain whether it was a vehicle stop or a pedestrian stop.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) – The International Weightlifting Federation has banned the Russian federation and all its weightlifters from the Rio Olympics. The IWF says the multiple cases of doping by Russian weightlifters have “seriously damaged” the integrity of the sport. The eight Russian Olympic spots have been offered to other countries.
