Authorities say 31-year-old Stella Brown died about 9:15 p.m. Saturday after being hit by a sport utility vehicle on state Highway 5, about a mile east of Langdon.

NEW SALEM, N.D. (AP) — One of North Dakota’s most visible landmarks has been the target of graffiti vandals this summer.

Salem Sue is billed as the world’s largest Holstein cow. It has stood above the town of New Salem since 1974 and can be seen from Interstate 94. It draws about 3,000 people a month.

Vandals have written in bold markers on the belly of sculpture, declaring that “they were there.”

The New Salem Lion’s Club is responsible for maintaining the sculpture. Club president Kirk Toepke says it’s not the first time that members have been called upon to scrub the cow.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The property management company operating family housing at Minot Air Force Base is opening homes for lease to the general public.

Minot AFB Homes Community Manager Michael Lahr says occupancy in the 1,600 homes the company manages on base has dropped below 95 percent, precipitating the move.

Lahr says the oil slowdown has opened up a lot of housing in Minot, giving people more options. He says Minot AFB Homes has to become “much more creative” to keep its occupancy numbers up.

The  company’s main target tenants are military members and their families. Retired military members, Department of Defense employees and civil service employees can also lease the homes. The company is now also renting to single military members, and to the general public.

TIOGA, N.D. — An unidentified Dakota Access Pipeline worker near Tioga was found slumped over his tractor on Thursday with serious head trauma. He was later pronounced dead at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

The North Dakota Public Service Commission was notified Friday by Energy Transfer Partners that a worker had serious head wounds.

Brian Kalk, PSC commissioner, says  the PSC requires companies to notify them within five days if an accident has occurred on a project.

Energy Transfer Partners has also notified the Occupational Safety and Health A d m i n i s t r a t i o n

The man — whose name has yet to be released — was working as a subcontractor for Energy Transfer Partners, driving a tractor filling in the pipeline with soil and grass seed.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Federal lawmakers and coal industry leaders are pushing for funding to help commercialize carbon-capture projects for old and new power plants.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that Republican U.S. Sen. John Hoeven and industry leaders met with Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz earlier this month to discuss such projects.

The group pitched Project Tundra, a partnership between Allete Clean Energy, Minnkota Power and BNI Coal to retrofit existing plants to capture carbon dioxide to use in enhanced oil recovery. They also discussed the zero-emissions Allam Cycle pilot project for new power plants, which uses compressed carbon dioxide to drive turbines.

Hoeven says there should be a focus on moving technology beyond lab research to field test commercially viable projects.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — America’s space agency is entering the second phase of a four-step plan to draw up rules of the road for small drones that fly under 500 feet.

The NASA project is meant to develop performance standards for drones that would be used for commercial purposes by companies such as Amazon and Google. It is a virtual system designed to help drone operators deal with weather conditions, restricted air space, airport congestion and other obstacles.

NASA is looking to present its research to the Federal Aviation Administration by the end of 2019. By that time, it estimates there will be seven million small drones in operation, including 2.6 million aircraft for commercial use.

The second phase of the project will include testing flights beyond visual line-of-sight of the operator.
CLEVELAND, N.D. (AP) — Supporters of a program that pays farmers to not alter wetlands on valuable cropland want to include it in the next federal farm bill.

The North Dakota Working Wetlands Pilot Project compensates producers for what they lose by not farming seasonal wetlands that are important to duck production.

Delta Waterfowl in 2014 applied for and received $1.75 million from a state outdoor heritage fund for the effort. The group also pitched in money, along with the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service, bringing the total to about $5 million.

The e project resulted in 124 contracts covering almost 9,400 wetlands.

Delta Waterfowl wants to include a larger version of the pilot project in the next farm bill. They’re being aided by research from North Dakota State University.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Attorney General’s Office is getting a $230,000 federal grant to help prevent online exploitation of children.

Members of the state’s congressional delegation say the money is coming through the U.S. Justice Department’s National Internet Crimes against Children Task Force.

The grant will help the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation train and equip affiliate agencies for computer forensics investigations. It also will help the agency maintain parole and probation officers who manage sex offender caseloads.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Interest in pronghorn hunting in North Dakota is surging as opportunities increase for hunters.

The state Game and Fish Department received 8,900 applications for 730 licenses this year. That was up 37 percent from last year, when 410 licenses were available, and near the peak of 10,200 applications in 2007, when 6,000 licenses were available.

A string of harsh winters set in after that and decimated the pronghorn population. Hunting was disallowed from 2010 through 2013 to allow the animals to recover.

Seasons were opened again in 2014. State Wildlife Chief Jeb Williams says opportunities for hunters have increased every year since, as the pronghorn population continues to recover thanks to recent mild winters.

Williams says there’s “a good foundation being set now for pronghorn.”

TORONTO (AP) —Josh Donaldson had his first career three-homer game, Troy Tulowitzki also went deep and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 9-6 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

Donaldson hit a solo homer off Kyle Gibson in the second, then delivered a go-ahead, two-run blast off Pat Light (0-1) in the seventh.

Dozens of fans tossed hats onto the field to celebrate the home run hat trick after Donaldson, the AL MVP in 2015, hit a solo shot off Alex Wimmers in the eighth. Groundskeepers and even the Blue Jays mascot helped clear the hats away.

It was Donaldson’s fourth multi-homer game this season and the 10th of his career.

Jose Bautista had his first three-hit game of the season for the AL East-leading Blue Jays.

Minnesota lost its season-worst 10th straight.

Scott Feldman (7-4) earned the win by getting two outs in the seventh. Jason Grilli worked the eighth and Roberto Osuna finished.

NFL…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Teddy Bridgewater was sharp in his return from a sore arm, completing 12 of 16 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown in the first half for the Minnesota Vikings in a 23-10 exhibition victory Sunday over the San Diego Chargers in the official unveiling their new stadium.

After sitting out last week, Bridgewater found Kyle Rudolph for a 27-yard score to cap a crisp 2-minute drill and led the Vikings to points on three of five possessions. Bridgewater even juked strong safety Adrian Phillips to further a 22-yard run that set up one of three field goals by Blair Walsh.

Melvin Gordon, aiming to rebound from a rough rookie season, cruised through the middle of Minnesota’s starting defense for a 39-yard touchdown after Philip Rivers audibled to a run upon sensing a blitz. San Diego lost running back Branden Oliver, though, to an Achilles tendon injury on his right leg that required a cart to take him off.

With sunlight streaming in from the floor-to-ceiling glass on the west side and through the translucent, space-age roof, the Vikings enjoyed a gleaming debut for U.S. Bank Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd of 66,143.

With Adrian Peterson resting on the sideline, Jerick McKinnon rushed eight times for 56 yards for the Vikings.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Defiant, and determined to be a conduit for U.S. change, Colin Kaepernick plans to sit through the national anthem for as long as he feels is appropriate and until he sees significant progress in America – specifically when it comes to race relations.

He knows he could be cut by San Francisco for this stand. Criticized, ostracized, and he’ll go it all alone if need be.

The quarterback realizes he might be treated poorly in some road cities, and he’s ready for that, too, saying he’s not overly concerned about his safety, but “if something happens that’s only proving my point.”

NEW YORK (AP) — All eyes will be on a very important pair of left wrists during Day 1 of the U.S. Open – those belonging to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Defending champion Djokovic, a righty, uses his secondary arm for a two-handed backhand. Nadal, of course, is a lefty who relies on that wing for his heavy topspin forehand that is among the best strokes in the game. How each man looks as he begins a bid for a third career title at Flushing Meadows will be one of the main things to watch Monday at the year’s last Grand Slam tournament.

The fourth-seeded Nadal, who beat Djokovic in the 2010 and 2013 finals, plays during the day session in Arthur Ashe Stadium against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. Nadal has won all four of their previous matchups, taking 10 of 11 sets.

Nadal missed 2 1/2 months because of a problem with the tendon sheath in his wrist, pulling out of the French Open before the third round, then skipping Wimbledon altogether. He returned at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics this month, losing to Kei Nishikori in the bronze-medal match in singles and winning a gold medal in doubles with Marc Lopez.

PGA-THE BARCLAYS…

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Patrick Reed has picked up a double victory.

His win in The Barclays was not only his first of the season, but secured a spot for him on the US Ryder Cup team.

Reed shot a 1-under 70 to finish 9-under par in the first of the four FedEx Cup playoff tournaments.

That was good for a one shot win over Sean O’Hare and Emiliano Grillo (eh-mee-lee-AN’-oh GREE’-yoh).

Brandt Snedecker and Zach Johnson also earned Ryder Cup berths with their finishes.

CHAMPIONS TOUR-BOEING CLASSIC

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP) — Bernhard Langer made a three-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Woody Austin and Kevin Sutherland for the title at the Champions Tour Boeing Classic.

Langer was five shots back at the turn, before shooting a 6-under 30 on the back nine to join the playoff at 13-under par.

The trio all birdied the par-5 18th hole to end regulation. But only Langer did it again in the playoff to win the tournament for the second time, a day after his 59th birthday.

Conner Rush had the New York team’s only RBI to give Endwell the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Harlost scored the deciding run on a passed ball.
