Admission is  $10 to receive an auction paddle and auction number.

The evening starts with  a social at 5-p.m., with appetizers and shopping with vendors and a raffle of the larger items.

The auction starts at 6-p.m., until all items are won.

Also on our show, Beth Dewald pointed out that all auction items are donated, and all the dollars raised go specifically for the purchase of the gas cards.

Laurel explained that the  $10 ticket gets the participants a paddle with a number.  Auction items will be announced and described.  Those wanting to bid on an items place up to four quarters in the bucket at the table, the number of quarters corresponds to the value of the auction item.

Then raise the paddle.  If the number drawn is the number on the paddle, the individual wins the item.  Extra quarters will be available for change.

Beth pointed out that examples of auction items are: Several Wine Baskets, flower arrangements, gift cards, a Dakota Store Basket, Jamestown Tourism Basket, Thirty One, Napkins, Norwegian Basket, Sunflower Basket, Coffee Baskets, plaques, wool mittens and a scarf.

Other items include University of Jamestown gear, a Minnesota Vikings BBQ Grilling Set, a Pamper Yourself Basket, embroidered dish towels and more items are being added.

It was pointed out that Ben Pesek, a franchisee with Snap On Tools, sold pink socks, and requested that the gas gift cards be distributed in his trade area, that includes, Valley City, Oakes, Ellendale, and New Rockford.

Laurel said that since 2013 there have been over 100 gas gift cards distributed, over all, including 38 each in 2015 and so far in 2016.

A few tickets remained available at last report, and advance ticket purchases are preferred as 120 tickets are available.

SAWYER, N.D. (AP) — Sawyer’s former school superintendent and high school principal has been sentenced to serve 40 years in prison for sexually abusing three teenage boys and possessing child pornography.

Fifty-two-year-old Charles Soper in April pleaded guilty to several felony and misdemeanor charges, and prosecutors dropped a human trafficking count. He was sentenced Thursday.

Defense attorney Eric Baumann asked for a 20-year prison sentence based on Soper’s lack of criminal record. Judge Douglas Mattson refused, saying “a good part of (the boys’) world was shattered.”

Soper spoke for about half an hour, saying the boys had represented themselves as being 18 years old but also saying he took full responsibility for his actions.

None of the boys were students at the school.

Soper resigned from the school after his arrest in May 2015.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot police have arrested a suspect in two shootings at an apartment a week apart.

Authorities found 16 shell casings at the scene on Sept. 2, and report that another 15 rounds were fired late Thursday. No one was injured.

About 15 minutes after the latest shooting, officers stopped a vehicle matching the description of one seen leaving the scene. They say they found a 9 mm handgun in the car and arrested a 19-year-old man on reckless endangerment charges. Formal charges were pending.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The suspect in a slaying in Grand Forks two years ago has been ordered held without bond while he awaits a second trial.

A jury in June 2015 convicted Delvin Shaw of murder and burglary in the June 2014 death of 24-year-old Jose Lopez, and he was sentenced to life in prison. The state Supreme Court last month overturned the murder verdict, saying some testimony at Shaw’s trial should not have been allowed.

Court documents show Shaw appeared in court Wednesday and was ordered held without bond.  Shaw indicated he will act as his own attorney, as he did during his first trial.

His second trial wasn’t immediately scheduled.

Authorities say Lopez was shot three times in his Grand Forks apartment in a case of mistaken identity.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol is reopening a state highway that has been closed for about three weeks because of an oil pipeline protest.

Patrol Superintendent Col. Michael Gerhart says state Highway 1806 was to reopen late Thursday afternoon. He says speeds will be reduced to 25 mph in some areas and troopers will be performing extra patrols on the road.

A several-mile stretch of the highway that runs through the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in southern North Dakota had been closed since Aug. 17. Opponents of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline are protesting near a construction zone just north of the reservation.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple said Thursday that North Dakota National Guard members will help provide security at traffic checkpoints along the highway.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge is set to deliver a key ruling on the four-state Dakota Access Pipeline that has drawn thousands of protesters to a construction site in North Dakota in recent weeks.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg says he’ll rule by the end of Friday on the Standing Rock Sioux tribe’s request to block the $3.8 billion project, which will carry oil from North Dakota to Illinois.

The tribe argues the project threatens water supplies and has already disrupted sacred sites. The developer, Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners, says modern technology allows quick detection of leaks. Pipeline supporters also say it would cut the amount of oil that travels by train.

A weekend confrontation between protesters and private security guards left some guards injured and some protesters with dog bites.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Hundreds of people have gathered in three states in a show of solidarity with protesters trying to halt the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline that will move oil from North Dakota to Illinois.

The Omaha World-Herald reports members of four Nebraska Native American tribes participated in a demonstration in downtown Omaha against the pipeline Thursday evening outside the offices of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which granted permits for the project.

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, hundreds gathered for an evening of speeches, dancing and chants of, “Water is life,” according to the Tulsa World. Several hundred marchers also rallied in Denver.

The Standing Rock Sioux tribe has sued to try to stop the $3.8 billion project, and the fight has drawn thousands of protesters to a construction site in North Dakota in recent weeks.

A federal judge is set to rule today  on the tribe’s request to temporarily stop construction near its reservation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein says she’s working with North Dakota authorities to arrange a court date on charges related to her participation in a protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Stein has acknowledged spray-painting construction equipment Tuesday in North Dakota. Stein and running mate Ajamu Baraka were charged Wednesday with misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and criminal mischief, and authorities issued arrest warrants.

Stein defended her actions to the Chicago Tribune Thursday during a campaign stop in Chicago. She said it would have been “inappropriate for me not to have done my small part” to support the Standing Rock Sioux.

The tribe says the pipeline threatens sacred sites and drinking water.

The $3.8 billion pipeline is to carry oil from western North Dakota to Illinois.

LINCOLN, N.D. (AP) — Turnover at the city of Lincoln’s auditor’s office continues with the resignation of another top leader.

Lincoln Mayor Gerarld Wise tells the Bismarck Tribune that city auditor Paula Hunt left her position Friday, after 10 months on the job, with no explanation. Hunt was Lincoln’s fourth auditor over the past two years.

City officials are close to drafting a preliminary 2017 budget, but this will be the second consecutive year that the city’s auditor will not be involved in the process.

After nine years on the job, Melanie Kitzan left the city auditor’s position in September 2014. Her replacement resigned after four months. Mary Marvel was later named city auditor but was dismissed five months into the job over bookkeeping errors.

Council Member Tom Volk says the “job is a challenging position.”

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Aberdeen police are investigating a second incident of shots being fired at an apartment complex.

About 10 shots were fired at an apartment complex shortly before 12:30 a.m. Thursday. It happened about a week after eleven rounds were fired from a vehicle into a different complex on Aug. 31 in a late-night drive-by shooting.

No one was hurt in either incident, but bullets hit both buildings and broke windows. Resident Adam Turnbill says his daughter had a close call when a bullet went through her bedroom window while she was sleeping Thursday.

Police are offering $1,000 rewards in both shootings for information that helps them crack the case.

TWINS…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins will honor the family of Jacob Wetterling with red jerseys and a Number 11 patch on their uniforms Friday night when the team plays Cleveland.

The Twins announced they’ll hold an online auction for 11 of the jerseys, with proceeds going to the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center. The center was founded to educate and assist families and communities with the goal of addressing and preventing exploitation of children.

The remains of 11-year-old Jacob were found in central Minnesota last week, nearly 27 years after he went missing. Danny Heinrich has confessed to abducting and killing him.

Jacob wore a red Number 11 jersey when playing youth sports. His family has encouraged people to use the number and jerseys as symbols of hope in honor of the boy.

VIKINGS…

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has undergone surgery on his severely injured left knee, the first step toward what will undoubtedly be a long, arduous recovery.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer confirmed the operation took place Thursday, nine days after Bridgewater went down in practice while dropping back to pass during a routine non-contact drill.

Zimmer said he spoke to Bridgewater’s surgeon after the procedure and learned no major problems were encountered beyond the knee dislocation and complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament. The Vikings said after the injury that Bridgewater also suffered other significant damage.

The 23-year-old will miss the 2016 season, and the nature and timing of the injury will make it difficult for Bridgewater to be at full strength for 2017, too.

DENVER (AP) — Denver’s dominant defense came up big against Cam Newton again and the Broncos escaped with a 21-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers in a Super Bowl rematch when Graham Gano missed a 50-yard field goal with four seconds remaining. Trevor Siemian, Peyton Manning’s successor, finished 18 of 26 for 178 yards, one TD and two interceptions and managed the game just well enough for the Broncos to continue their hex on the Panthers.

TENNIS…

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams is out at the U.S. Open. The top seed fell to 10th seed Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic 6-2, 7-6. The loss prevents Williams from earning her seventh championship at Flushing Meadows and 23rd major title overall, which would both have been Open-era records. Pliskova plays Germany’s Angelique Kerber in Saturday’s U.S. Open women’s final.

NEW YORK (AP) — The men’s semifinals at the U.S. Open are taking place this afternoon in New York. In the first match, top seed Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) is facing 10th seed Gael Monfils (GAH’-ehl mohn-FEES’). The second match features No. 3 Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRINK’-ah) and No. 6 Kei Nishikori (kay nih-shih-KOHR’-ee).

The scene is set for the women’s final after last night’s semifinals. In a shocker, top seed Serena Williams was ousted by 10th seed Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 7-5. In her first Grand Slam final Pliskova will be playing second seed Angelique Kerber.

By losing last night Williams will drop from the No. 1 ranking in the world, to be replaced by Kerber.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — What could be a pivotal phase of the presidential election is starting today in North Carolina, the first of 37 states that will allow balloting by mail for any reason or in person. Data compiled by The Associated Press shows that early voters are expected to make up between 50 percent to 75 percent or more of all ballots in some of the race’s most pivotal states.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A windfall today for organizations seeking the defeat of Donald Trump. Dustin Moskovitz, a billionaire co-founder of Facebook, says he and his wife are is giving $20 million to aid groups’ anti-Trump efforts. He calls the Republican presidential candidate divisive and dangerous and says his appeals to Americans who feel left behind are “quite possibly a deliberate con.”

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – North Korea says its nuclear test today paves the way for an array of stronger, smaller and lighter nuclear weapons. It’s a first for Pyongyang — two tests in one year. South Korea’s president called the detonation, which Seoul (sohl) estimated was the North’s biggest-ever in explosive yield, an act of “fanatic recklessness.” Japan called North Korea an “outlaw nation.” There are global expressions of concern.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Federal Aviation Administration is trying to clip the wings of the newest Samsung smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7.
